Im not sure if this is the right place to be asking this, or if it should be going out to the background forum, but as it also has a bti to do with Tactics, i thought i would try over here first. Mods, if this is the wrong place, please just swap it over for me.

So im allready looking ahead to my next, next project (next is Space wolves... just something about wolves ill tell you.) And i've been looking abit at the pre-heresy stuff floating around lately, thanks to forgeworld and all that, and decided i would go ahead with something based off there. I wasn't really sure which leigon i wanted to work off of though, I wanted to do something that i haden't seen alot of around, so that narrowed down the more comman legion/chapters. As i read up on lexicanum about the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus/Black Legion, the idea struck me, When the Sons of horus turned to chaos following Horus, there were those in the Legion who didnt agree, The loyalists reverted back to being the Luna Wolves. Though most were killed at Isstvan, There were still some who survived, and i thought that could produce a unique chance to play with. If these loyalists were caught in a warpstorm and brought forwards in the timeline, say 10,000 years or so..

But what im having difficulty with now, is figuring out exactly what sort of force they would be. It's been a long time since i started reading Horus Rising (and never finished..) So i dont really know, where they a more assault based contingent? Ranged based? Or something inbetween? How did, and would, they opperate, and which codex might best represent them?

All I know of the top of my head is no Libbys... they wouldn't exist pre-heresy.

Deff Rolla them until they are grey goo. Apply boyz to flavor. Serve over ice.

Make sure you grab Forgeworld's Lugft Huron model if you're going Luna Wolves (believe that's his chapter). I'd even say play the Chaos book-just don't use marks (maybe Khorne, as it just gives additional attacks). Stay away from Daemonic Possession, except on the Land Raider as it can symbolize a weaker, not fully tuned Machine Spirit. It would probably work. Also, since thunder hammers didn't exist then either...no worries. You don't have any equipment to stay away from. Just models...like CSM dreads, defilers, oblits, plaguebearers and thousand sons. Emp's children are questionable, depending on how you do fluff.

@timetowaste Your thinking of the Astral Claws with Huron. The Luna Wolves are one of the founding Legions, With Horus being their Primarch. Their the one's who after the heresy become the Black legion

Whoops, my apologies. Felt slightly off...either way, get the Huron model anyway. He's bad and would make for an awesome looking captain.
Could you still use the Chaos Codex for it? Or definitely a Marines feel to your style?

I only read Horus Rising so my knowledge of their tactics isn't fully. But i will till you what i thought of there tactics used in this book. The things is though, It seemed like there was no tactics. It was one big bum rush with a mass of space marines, which the Luna Wolves had a lot of. They also seemed to compete who got to the enemy general first so these attack where really fast. Granted though, they were fighting rebels so maybe the Wolves felt they were super powerfull and nothing could beat them so an army of lightly armed humans and a fortress is a slice of pie. I know some of the tactical planing Horus used, or considered (because Horus loved his lighting fast bum rushes), came from my buddy Corax. It also seemed that the Luna wolves had access to tech before anyone else, because they were so succesfull. So They made use of new Terminator armour and Jump packs which recently was invented which the book says. More then likely though, this armour and jumps packs stuck with Black legion. But you can still use a few and say they had some or something, make some fluff up for that.

I'd say you could use the SM codex easily enough, and focus on the elements you know. Otoh, the blood angel codex would work well as they're a fast hitting army with lots of jump packs and speed.

In all of the Horus Rising novels the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horu were big on spearhead tactics. So I guess the easiest way to pull that off would be with a fast squad like a jump pack chap/counts as Shrike maybe with a squad of assault marines and tacs/land speeders etc. for support taking out things that would try and flank them. Assuming you are using the regular SM codex that is, might be easier to pull off with Blood Angels but it's all about preference I suppose

From what Robby said, why not use Black Templars and go with Black Tide? Swarm of bodies that surges forward, and you have an HQ who is built to tackle other HQs. Seems like a win win. You also have decent assault marines with access to cheap plasma pistols and VERY cheap melta bombs. I think it covers his suggestion VERY well, plus...no psykers. Win-Win?

It does sound as thought either Templars or Vanilla 'dex might be the best rule set at moment. The problem i see using the Blood Angels, would be there rules like red thirst, black rage.. and their army specific units. Though, there might be alittle humor of useing the rules for the chapter that Horus screwed over, for his own legion.

HIDING IN THE METAL BAWKSES!!

I'd go with Space Wolf, in the Horus Heresy books they do a lot of close range engagements and melee.
Ragnar's rules would be quite appropriate for Garviel Loken.

Also Librarians were used up until the Emperor banned them.

The only real issue i have with running them out of the space wolves book, is that im allready working on a space wolf army. So i wanted something alittle different.

They always talk about their tactics being the "tip of the spear". They say this a lot, in basically every Luna Wolves battle scene in the first 3 or 4 books.

Drop pods, quick attacks at the enemy leadership, shock troops.

IF you wanted to use the BA codex it would work quite well, i'm sure i remember several conversations in the Loken books about peoples 'choler' and 'feeling the the hand of the ship upon me' That says to me that the Lunar Wolves had some occasional problems with lost tempers. I dunno, just spitballing!

Hmm, i guess it does sound that BA would work well enough too. A mix of assault squads, and back up fire support. Just stay away from the Death Company, Sanquinary stuff..
