Well, we now know that Ogres are here, and we've been sure that Necrons will be out in nigh a month or so. Am I the only one who was REALLY more worried about the NEXT armies? "When are my Tau getting updated?" I ask. "What about Fantasy? Will Brets or Wood Elves or Dwarves be next?" I mean, Ogres are amusing (and tempting) but I already have 4 fantasy armies. One of them went from T1 to T3 with a new rule set (VC), another was pretty unchanged (DE), one became more flexible (Dwarves) and another sucks WORSE than before (WE). VC are FAR from a reboot, I can feel sure of that (and if they get one before Brets, WE or Dwarves, it will be a crime) but the other half of my armies are pretty close. In 40k I field Tau. So all these releases are nice, because they give me an idea of the state of the games, but what I really want is to know which book is next on the horizon.

Am I the only one, or is the majority of Dakka split amongst Tired of GW or Getting the New Shiney?

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

only new release i'd really been hanging out for anytime in the last few years was the GK release earlier this year which i have been slowly collecting and painting since

of course that being said i would love to see a release for my dwarves they're feeling neglected and have been getting drunker and more belligerent by the hour. I do however have eternal patience so i'm just one of those people that is happy to putter along and wait

Last time i got worked up about a release and was really champing at the bit to get it was the new Tyranid codex.

A few months of attempting to play them plus one biased as hell FAQ later I sold them, as playing them was, for me, about as much fun as having sensitive bits of my body rubbed vigourously with a cheese grater. Some people enjoy the new incarnation, i'm sure, but then some people like cheesegraters too..

So, this time i'm going for Apathy.. GW's advertising department is very supportive of this decision in my time of need

Brets likely will be next(if the 'sneak preview' of the current release fighting a specific race in their new book is anything to go by), and I'd be very surprised if Wood Elves were not after that. Wood Elves and Dwarves have historically had an axe to grind(no pun intended) against each other, and while VC might not need a reboot chronologically it wouldn't hurt, because of mechanics being heavily overhauled.

That's my own theory at least.

I personally dont care! the only person i know who is waiting for a new update is a friend waiting for the necrons, but i think he doesn't mind waitng a bit longer.

I know what you mean nagashek, though i do think you're missing the "happily tootling along with the hobby" dakkaites from those options.

I wish that gw would or could provide a forecasted list of items to be released with approximate dates, as long as it was close to accurate and not a piss take / info for the sake of info only to go back on it.

Sadly though, be it due to cash flow / supply / design & manufacturing process well never see this. Gw would argue that it'd kill their sales as wed hold off for just the releases that we want, though if anything I think it'd just mean we plan purchases - not a bad thing as we may experiment with new armies if we knew a codec update for current armies was still 6+ months away

I think most of us are really looking forward to some army being updated, but not necessarily one coming out really soon. I for one am really excited by the thoughts of new Chaos Marine and Tau books, and I'm not alone in that. No clue when either will happen though.

Other companies release one or two models from each faction every month or two months. Games Workshop releases models of a given faction once in bulk every few years. With the temptation of these other companies' models and the knowledge that my 40k armies will be neglected for years, it's hard to care about Games Workshop releases anymore. I've seen false rumors of this Summer of Fliers that got me excited. I had false hopes of a Tyranids second wave. I got let down by the Tyranids codex. I finally decided that the new Tyranids were worthwhile and GW pumps up the price and makes them an inferior material. I got to use my cool Eldar codex for mere months before a new edition of 40k made it awful. I'd invest in another army if I had any confidence that GW would make it worthwhile.

So no, I'm not one of those people looking at Necrons and beyond. Necrons are rather cool, but the only thing beyond that is more Space Marines. By the time an actual non-SM codex gets mentioned by GW it'll be Winter 2012 and I'll be enjoying games by other companies. It's easier this way.

Other companies aren't sitting on a catalog of existing models in the thousands.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Still shouldn't take them a decade to put a new model or two out for a faction and update their rules.

Only release I'm waiting for is eldar... but it looks like that is going to be ages away. When it arrives, I want to see plenty of plastics, not a kit or 2 and the rest in finecast.

Plastic aspect warriors, sculpted by Jes Goodwin would be great.

The dark eldar range really leaves the current eldar range (still filled with tons of 2nd edition models) in the dirt.

Unfortunately, next year is likely to be 6th edition with new Space Marine Codex released, then the release schedule will once again go "space marines", "other army", "space marines", "other army" until we eventually get an eldar codex 3-4 years after 6th edition is out.

I would put good odds on Dark Angels or Black Templars after necrons.

The only future releases I try and keep tabs on are non GW product.

If no firm info about a release is available I don't worry too much. There plenty enough out there to keep me occupied.

I haven't cared for any release since DE...and I waited 9 long years for my TK let down.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)

Ugh. I could care less about anything other than CSM. I keep checking the N&R section for a hint of a new codex, or new models. Or something.

It's pretty sinister the way they update the core rules to nerf certain armies / builds terribly, then slowly get around to updating those books to make them decent again...

I parted with my wood elves when 8th edition hit, but the cycle has jaded me a bit. Just stopped me from starting up DE as I'd been planning, now that it seems 6th edition is near... I'd hate to build an army just before the ruleset changes and then have it nerfed to kingdom come

You're dissapointed with GW because some people on forums saw an advert for a DE flyer and spun it into a massive summer release based on absolutely nothing?

I think that it's always exciting to see new model releases. I don't play ogres for instance, but thought there were some amazing models coming out. I don't really take anything about new releases seriously until I see photos of the models/codex though. I'd love to see plastic sisters, as that's one of my favorite armies and I play Bretonnians for fantasy so I'd love some new kits for them too. I try to stay out of the drama. This is my hobby, I'll leave it before I get stressed out over it.

It's only natural to not get excited about a codex you don't care about.

I'm very interested in the next Ork, Chaos, and Black Templar codecies. While I'll review anything else that comes out since one of my friends might play it, that doesn't mean I really care.

Personally, I am not interested in Chaos and Orcs in both systems (except Chaos Dwarfs) and Space Marines in all variants, so I am immune to half the new releases. Doesn't hinder me to buy a single new model, if I really like to paint or convert it, but that doesn't happen that often. Generally I have some armies I like and am interested in updates, but can wait for them (having started with Wood Elves, Dark Eldar and Tyranids ). I am not a bandwagon type. And I try to have an idea of releases within the next 6-12 months, although this gets more difficult. This also strenghtens my immunity to the shiney new army syndrome.

You are aware that the "summer of flyers" rumour originated October 2010 as a speculation on reports of 5 finished flyers (2 since released, another confirmed), not May 2011 on a WD ad, right?

I eagerly await Codex: Genestealer Cultists

Or any actual NEW army/codex for that matter.

WH40K needs an infusion of fresh air, and I think a totally new army (especially one based upon retro fluff like genestealer/chaos cultists) rather then MOAR marines111 would be an unexpected and welcomed breathe of fresh air...

I also realize that it will never happen and that we eventually will all be playing some variety of marines...

I think I was perhaps the only one who actually LIKED the 4e marine book. It gave me plenty of reasons to make my DIY chapter instead of just going with UM/SW/BA/BT/DA/GK (Holy crap: that many? Really?) My Marine army was full of fluff, modelling fun, and all sorts of great enjoyment for myself (and i'd like to think also for those I crushed under my heel).

The "New edition nerfing" concern wasn't one I worried about until 8E Fantasy. I have played VC since 6th ed with a res spam list. It was fairly effective in 6th, brutally overpowered in 7th, and impossible to field in 8th. Now I see these DE models for 40k (and I play DE in Fantasy too) and think about maaaaybe starting up a force of them. But now that I know 6e is coming out, why bother? This is the real reason GW would want to shut down their info cycle. Then again, it is their own fault. If they had some sort of play testing/accountability/quality control instead of codex creep and out of control authors, we wouldn't have to worry about certain armies being MORE unplayable than they were last edition (sorry, WE) or buffed beyond comprehension (Skaven...)

Never been a fan of Necrons, so I am very much looking past the next release. After looking at all the ogre mini's though, I have interest I didn't expect. I might pick up one or two just to paint.

I love playing Tau and am very much looking forward to that book, even if it sucks.

What I'm not looking forward to, at all, is 6E 40k, unless all the rumors are complete bunk and 6E is just a fine tuning of 5E.

Other than edition changes, I am not concerned with what comes out next.

If one of the armies I collect gets an update, then I pick up the codex that is about it.

But edition changes can destroy armies. 5th Ed 40k with its need for vehicles and melta if you want competitive play etc.

Or just 8th ed Fantasy all together.

Does put you off playing.

Mind seeing as the first part of the Hobbit is out next year, and we know that GW have an extend licence I get the feeling it might not be 40k next year.

I'm hoping Neccrons don't suck and get some cool new stuff that at the very least I can use as bitz. Beyond that I've not much interest due to the lack of anything to be interested in with their tightening of the info black out. FAR more interested in Warmachine, because they actually give me tid bits of into to be interested in.
