So this is an idea for a CSM Chapter that I have been toying with for awhile. I love the H.P Lovecraft Cthulhu Mythos, and have read just about everything Lovecraft has written. I wanted to do something a little different than the normal tyranid cthulhu guys.

The Sons of R'lyeh

Background: It is believed by Imperial Inquisitors that the Sons of R'lyeh Chapter are an off shoot of the Notorious Alpha Legion. Shortly after the heresy three companies of Alpha Legion were attacking an unknown Oceanic world. Shortly afterword one of the Marine Strike Cruisers was mysteriously destroyed, the other two left the planet shortly thereafter, leaving the indigenous population intact.

Since that time the Sons of R'leyh have been sighted numerous times, mostly near large world mostly covered in deep oceans. They almost never engage in direct conflict, usually leaving the planets population alone. The only lasting sign of the marines are the small cults that are left behind, remaining mostly hidden from the general populace.

Modes of operation: The Sons of R'lyeh rely heavily on the use of cultists and mutants in the few battles that they do fight. It is believed the Chapter numbers under 100 marines. The chapter also seems to conflict more with the other followers of Chaos than Imperials, the cults usually stamping out any other chaos cults on the planets.

Without further ado, a Son of R'lyeh:

What do you guys think? Should I continue with the project? I did add some barnacles to the legs and changed the bolter a little bit.

I am almost done painting it and will post pictures when the painting is done, if you want to check out some more of my stuff I post all my new stuff at Alienstreesandskulls.blogspot.com.

Great idea, and execution - maybe you could hint at their patron being the 5th chaos god?

Im dont have much knowledge on the Cthulhu Mythos aside from the fact that every nerd and his hamster seem to worship him, well him or the flying spaghetti monster, but i really like the concept you got going here. I also quite like the background too. Very plausable. Any idea for a colour scheme?

As a huge fan of the Cthulhu mythos, I must say I approve of this model.

Never cared for/about Lovecraft, but I'm excited about this project, nonetheless. If this model is any indication, you'll have a tastefully themed force, instead of a heavily converted but ultimately unidentifiable force. I think the subtler touch you've displayed here is the way to go, at least for the basic troops.

Seamonster marines? Awesome! I don't know, but I can imagine that (at least some) parts from the possessed pack could be useful?

Actually I painted the skull on the one shoulder pad half black and half white, the symbol of Malal, an old chaos god that works against chaos.

The painting is very nice, but somehow not at all what I imagined for your great idea - he looks more like a nurgle marine.

I think I would have done something like a turquoise/bluish green scheme.

I love HPL, and I think this is a great idea. Your sculpting is top notch (and nicely done, not over the top). Too many people make tentacles way too big.

My only suggestion would be to simplify and emphasize the 'chapter symbol'. It's well executed, but being so small and so delicate, it gets lost, visually. Look at the Cthulhu logo on, say, SJ Games Cthulhu dice, for example. A less complex symbol would probably look better on the tabletop.

Might I suggest using some River Trolls as Chaos Spawn (or Deep Ones, as the case may be)?

So here is a base that I did up last night as kinda "see if I can" sort of thing, and since it is in this same type of thread as my previous work, I figured that I would post it here.

Still a little more to do on it, but it is pretty much finished. What do you think?

He looks pretty good. Like GuitaRasmus i was expecting a bluer green colour but it still looks good none the less. I like the Chaper symbol and that chainsword is painted close to perfection. The base is also appropriately tentaclely.

maybe put a highlight or something with the trims on the shoulder pads and legs? they seem a bit flat atm, but that might just be me haha

The Legs do have a pretty good highlight on them, its just hard to see because of the camera angles. The Shoulder pad probably could use a little more of a defined highlight, right now its just mostly shaded.

As far as color choice goes, I wanted it to have more realistic tones (lol, realism on a 8 ft tall super human in powered armor blessed by the eldrtich powers of the outer darkness). I just dont see a turquoise or darker green as fitting the grim realism I wanted. When you look up images of Cthulhlu a lot of the more cartoonish ones are the darker green, where as the more realistic ones are more of a pale green-sickish yellow. In particular the inspiration is from the HorrorClix Cthulhlu miniatures.

I am thinking my next marine is going to be a Sorcerer and possibly then a squad leader. If I ever get around to a whole army I would probably use the FW IA:7 List, with a small contigent of Sons of R'lyeh, a lot of cultist (imperial guard) and deep ones (plague Zombies). Otherwise if Codex Legions ever comes out, I would probably use any alpha legion rules, using deep ones as lesser demons.

This is awesome. I think the chaos spawn models themselves will serve you well as deep ones, or just as bitz fodder for the rest of your warband. Awesome work. Post more.

Wow, really nice work! I can see how it could get mistaken for a Nurgle CSM, but with a little blue, like GuitaRasmus said, it would jump right out from that impression I think. The sculpt is excellent and it's a great idea all around.

The insanity continues!

The work on the Son's of R'lyeh does continue, albeit slowly. The next marine I have modeled is the standard bearer for the first squad. I am still not entirely sure that I like the standard, but I am not sure that I am going to change it.

Here it is,
