The Last Chancer Who Survived

Did anyone watch Torchwood on Starz? (or whatever other channel it was on in your neck of the woods)
I thought it was pretty decent overall. I never watched any of the show before so I was coming into the whole thing not knowing anyone. I liked the mix of humor & seriousness, though to me a lot of it felt sort of like "British X-Files" to me. I think the only thing I really had a problem with was on the finale, the team is at both of those special areas and the bad guys are just sitting there explaining everything.. just didn't seem realistic.. why didn't they just knock all the Torchwood folks in the head and lock em away in a hole somewhere? Oh yeah, it's TV I kinda saw the whole thing with Rex at the very end coming a mile away too.
Is the show a spinoff of Doctor who or were they just making a reference to it? Never really watched that much, but Captain Jack mentioned "the doctor" a few times and flying around the universe.

The original Torchwood was very clearly a Dr. Who spin-off... even would pick up occasional appearances by other Dr. Who characters. (Captain Jack was a Dr. Who regular for quite some time.). The original BBC series had some very good episodes, but was much darker and sexier than Dr. Who. "Miracle Day" is much darker and sexier than the BBC series, and they seem to have abandoned any pretense at Jack being bi-sexual for homosexual. Both hetero & homosexual bump-and-grind scenes with various characters, etc. It has become much like an X-files rip off, which is too bad as the original series had a lot of good points.

The problem with Torchwood is that they took a brilliant idea and character and then wondered what the hell to do with it. They obviously wanted to try and tap into parent audience of Dr Who and do something more grown up, however for a long time they obvioulsy wanted to keep the crossover options open, so they couldn't go too adult.
I'm assuming tha Children of Earth was a deliberate step away from any Dr Who crossover, apart from a token cameo in Tennant's last episode as the Dr. The problem with this is they really crucified the storyline. By making the whole of the British government turn against Torchwood, that was it, there was nowhere else to go.
Miracle Day is just so dire and slow. It's a slick to look at, but that's all. Torchwood is nothing in the show, just a name. There's few bits of left over tech. Taking away Jack's immortality just left him as a normal bloke with not alot to really do. I hope that RTD either comes to his senses or he's taken out of the picture, because the concept of Torchwood and Captain Jack are amazing, but at the moment I can't see anybody taking it up next time.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

I watched a little, but never really got into the series due to to many other things to do/watch. As for the bad guys explaining everything its like on the toon Incredibles you know. Bad guys always monologue which gives the good guys a chance to win in the end.

I have found it painful to watch. Dreadfully slow for 6-7 episodes with little in the way of sci-fi/horror which is surely the genre its based in.
Some bits have been cleverly done, the breif part where Jack is captured and tortured by 1920's New Yorkers and the effects improved, but the original cast have been shown up by the better US actors and the story has been predictable and dragged out.
Seriously Ep6 I missed the first 10 minutes (not the problem you would thought it would be) then they spent 10-15 minutes of scene of people just on the phone to each other?
I am at the point where I feel I have to watch it but don't hold out much hope for the finale. I am disappoint.

I'm too used to the campiness of Dr. Who to enjoy the grim darkness of Torchwood.

I watched the first episode, it was terrible. John Barrowman has been hosting so many Saturday night shows that his Cpt. Jack has zero credibility as a character now. I've completely stopped watching it.
With hindsight Cpt. Jack was a terrible adult drama character. He should have stayed as a Dr. Who character, where he was very good.
A shame as the third series (which blew the previous two out of the water) showed real potential.

I couldn't even make it through the first episode in its entirety. Captain Jack is completely out of place in the grim darkness of the Torchwood universe. He was a lot of fun in Doctor Who, and I was always disappointed he didn't just become a full-on companion of the Doctor's at some point. I like the concept of Torchwood, but it's just too far from Doctor Who's campiness to really hook me in.
