Hey Dakka,

I am thinking of starting a new army of SW. I want to start small and build from there. what are some good lists at the 750pt marker??

PS. I have not started collecting the army yet so all suggestions are welcome!

Hopefully this is in the right place, if not sorry and feel free to move MOD

I would start with the Space Wolf Battle Force [1-2], a Space Marine Battle Force and a Assualt on Black Reach.
Then sell/Trade the orks to help pay for some more basic troops

Honestly depends what you want to do. Seems competitive lists typically have lots of grey hunters, missile launcher long fangs, rune priests, and razorbacks.

Personally I'm playing for fun/fluff and starting with a Lord on Thunderwolf, Iron Priest on Thunderwolf with cyberwolves, 5 Thunderwolf Cavalry, and 2 minimum squads of blood claws in rhinos (1000 pt), then expanding to use a Land Raider Crusader with 15 blood claws and Lukas the Trickster. All the wild wolfy things I can get my hands on.

I generally advise against buying the Space Wolf Battle Force, because it comes with a Drop Pod which is pretty much useless unless you buy 3 of them and several Dreadnoughts.

750 pints is relatively small and you cannot take much of what the codex has to offer. Once you have a few games under your belt I think you will quickly outgrow a 750 point army and find yourself wanting to add more to the list. 1,500 points makes an excellent core of models that you can build on, or take away from to play smaller games.

At 750 you really just want to go basic, like a Rune Priest, some troops, and perhaps a pack of Long Fangs:

Rune Priest (Chooser, Living Lightning, Tempest's Wrath) - 110
3 Wolf Guard (2x Power Fist/Combi-Melta, 1x Combi-Plasma) - 109
8 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino) - 170
8 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino) - 170
5 Long Fangs (4 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ TL Lascannon) - 190
Total 749

This gives you 3 tanks, some core troops, and a Heavy Support choice to blow up incoming enemy vehicles. The Rune Priest rides in one of the Rhinos, and the two Power Fist Wolf Guard ride with them as well. The one Wolf Guard with a Combi-Plasma goes with the Long Fangs (I had an extra 5 points so a Combi-Plasma sounded reasonable).

This list can be made with three Wolf Packs and three Razorback kits, along with a set of 4 Missile Launchers from The War Store and some Meltaguns from GW's website. Always buy Razorbacks, not Rhinos. They come with the Razorback turret and the Rhino Top Hatch for $3 more. When you build it, just don't glue the hatch in place and you can swap between a Rhino and a Razorback freely. Grand total, factoring in an online discount (I buy from TheWarStore.com at a 20% discount), would be somewhere around $220.00 plus shipping. From there you can start adding things like Dreadnoughts, additional troops, Wolf Scouts, more Long Fangs, Etc...to grow your list as you see fit. Moving up to 1,000 points would be as simple as adding a pack of 5 Grey Hunters in a Razorback (where the Combi-Plasma Wolf Guard would go, possibly trading his weapon for a Combi-Melta), a 6th Long Fang, and a smattering of extra weapons and upgrades to your existing Grey Hunter packs as you see fit. Going up to 1,500 would add another pack of Long Fangs, and perhaps some Thunderwolves or Dreadnoughts.

Anyway, I hope that helps!

Thanks all, this is all great info! I really like the fluff behind the sw and I like how competitive of an army they can be too. I don't think I am going with the battle force as this is more of a side project and just want an army to paint that will break up painting my other army.

Do not build AoBR or space battle force until you have space wolf parts to give them.

For 750 points I am not sure you can fit in blood claws. They have one use which is too restrictive at such a low points score. That is why wouldn't but the battleforce. The drop pod has its uses.
