It's been a long while since I last played 40k, I've been playing lots of Fantasy, Warmachine, Hordes and Malifaux.
since 3rd ed. What's really changed?
I'm also going to be doing a new army, I'm thinking either doing a Tyranids army (the new Trygon and Mawloc models look AMAZING!)
or a Night Lords codex, the general consensus is that this should be done with the Blood Angels Codex, is that suitable? Would I be able to go to tournaments with an army styled in this manner?

Thanks for any and all feedback

Night lords can be played using the chaos codex.

A tyranid army can work, but it depends on exactly what you plan on using. Hordes of biovores is a no go.

True line of sight is the biggy right now in terms of the edition change.

I know that they can be, but I've heard that Blood angels better represent their abilities due to their prevalence of Jump Packs.

For Tyranids I was thinking more of a Nidzilla with Trygons opening tunnels which hordes of Hormagaunts pour out of.

so True line of sight now..... wow, that'll be interesting.

Night Lords are sort of like the Raven Guard in that everyone assumes they're chock full of jump packers, when that actually isn't the case. For some reason, their assault elements just tend to get all the good press.

This tactic sounds awesome on paper, but really sucks in practice. For one, the Hormagaunts can't use the tunnels until the turn after the Trygon enters play, which means you need to be really lucky on reserve rolls. Then, it's easy for your opponent to put something fast on top of the hole, which means anything trying to emerge but not able to deploy due to enemy models around the hole are destroyed. It's just a poor rule implementation.

Indeed. As someone who left the game at the start of 4th edition and just got back into it, TLOS isn't something I enjoy with my Tyranids.

Night Lords are awesome. You can use the regular Chaos codex just fine for them - better than buying a ton of small squads of very expensive Raptors. Read Soul Hunter and Blood Reaver and you'll want a Night Lords army as much as I do now.
