Some months ago, I attempted to create a Deathwing army in a week and paint it over the course of a weekend. Although I failed to paint the entirety of the army in a single weekend, I have contiued to work on the army and have now completed four terminator squads and a dreadnought. I hope to add Belial and a Landraider before the end of the project.

Squad Appollyon

Almost forgot to upload this. I took the photo on my phone so the quality isn't brilliant.

The image is inspired by the Artwork of William Blake, and the Emperor Tarot Card. I believe the exact image I copied from was from the poem Jerusalem.

The Emanation of the Giant Albion

The Emperor Tarot

If you haven't seen any of William Blake's work, please open another web browser and look right now. They are nightmarish and beautiful and haunting and I'm sure will inspire someone reading this. There are many hunched, tormented figures in Jerusalm, crouching down, often naked, covering their countenance from the viewer. I wanted to translate the sense of shame to the figure of the Emperor of the Tarot as an allegorical representation of the Unforgiven's penance. I have also given the emperor a broken sword; something for all those Jungian & Freudian students out there.

Squad Imahiel 'Victuus Priscus'

The second of my Deathwing squads; Imahiel 'Victus Priscus' which literally translates as the 'living ancient'; but can be read as the living dreadnought. The nickname is a playful nod to the age of the miniature, and the venerable status of Imahiel. The watcher that walks beside him is a figure of ambigous portent. On the one hand, having a watcher follow Imahiel marks him for greatness within the chapter, but it may be a harbinger of the sergeant's demise, and final ascension to the chassis of a dreadnought.

Those are some awesome terminators. How did you make the banner so "ruinned"? You used a lighter or something?

I'm thinking lighter as well. Perhaps blowtorch?

I used to have that Captain. Your models look great and with a more updated palette of colors and the 40mm bases, these will fit perfectly with any modern angels. Great job, very clean paint as well

@Hugs: They are indeed the older metal terminators. I couldn't sell them, so I decided to create an army instead.
@ Jelrik: I'd like to say I used sanctified promethium, but the truth is far more mundane. I used matches to burn little bits of the banner until I was satisfied.
@Chowderhead: I wish I had a blow torch (to make creme brulee, not burn my models).
@ Overwatch: Cheers man.
@ DArk Traveller: Thanks man! Blake is incredible and I only wish the army contained more banners.
@ Element: Thanks man!
@Maniac: Thank you. These were heavily influenced by winterdyne's deathwing commission army. The colour is VMC ivory; its a fantastic colour, one well worth buying.
@ Kimzi: Thank you. I put a bit more into the bases to deflect from some of the repeated poses that would inevitably crop up during the creation of the army.

Very nice. I might end up doing the same with my old figures that I still haven't painted after seeing yours as inspiration.

What is VMC ivory? Vallejo Model Colour?

Can we see a side view of the far right guy in the first pic? The one with the old-school termie captain fist.

Hey scipio.au. VMC ivory stands for Vallejo Game Colour.

There are a few more photos of that miniature on my blog.

Squad Belphegor

more pics here

Squad Belphegor accompanies Belial to war, forming his personal cohort and spearhead of attack. Belphegor is the most senior sergeant of the army and is second only to revered Cain in council to the Lord of the Deathwing. When squad Belphegor takes to the field, the air scorches with lightening, and thrums to the irresistible crack of hammers destroying all before them.

dreadnought Cain next week.

Dreadnought Cain

This is one of the centerpieces of the army; Dreadnought Cain, the interred servant of the Emperor and former Grand Master of the Deathwing.

The army is nearly complete, and I have big news; Belial is complete. I will be taking pictures of him tomorrow and uploading them here.

Very nice.
Reminds me of the time a friend in school was trying to get me to split the original metal terminator boxed set with him, with the caveat that he got every model that wasn't a pf/sb terminator. I declined.

The dread could do with having his plasma barrels drilled out/mold line removed.

Where is that flamey brazier bit from?

Thank you both. I've listed the components I used on my blog; the braizer is from the corpse cart.

While photographing my Belial the bulb blew out. Very frustrating and i'm waiting for the replacement to arrive.

I wanted to write an update of what i've been working on today. I've had some interest in the banner I created for Apollyon and, since I enjoyed creating it so much, I decided to create another for my Librarian.

The first thing I do is gather images. This is one of my favourite activities when working on a project. I'm gathering images, quotes and music that inspire me all the time; and when I stumbled upon this old artwork by John Blanche, I knew I'd use it at sometime in the future:

At this point I had no real theme in mind. I liked the image, and it felt right to use with this model.

The initial sketch is very rough. I'm working on shapes, proportion and working in any detail that catches the eye. I'm not really concerned with the final outcome, i'm just trying to cram interesting information into my brain to use in the next sketch.

I had a lion's head, but not much else. I knew from my previous attempt at creating a banner, highly detailed images do not lend themselves well to such a small scale. I decided to have a broken blade protruding from the mouth of the lion, and winged background to frame the head.

Below, we can see a rough sketch (on the right) trying to fit all the images I wanted to use. This time I draw to scale, to make sure the Lion's head, broken Blade and Winged motif is not too complicated.

And I remember the most infamous inhabitant of Caliban; the Legendary Lion from which the Primarch took his personal fetish. The beasts of Caliban are described as spectral nightmares, neither flesh nor spirit (a bit like Koi, or cats; half in, half out). Fitting then, that a Librarian, who draws upon the power of the warp, should echo the image of the Calibalite Lion in his heraldry.

For this last step I concentrate on technique, form and composition. I measure out the gaps between the feathers, mark the central point of the banner and construct the lion head around the broken sword. I decided to elongate the mouth beyond what is biologically possible to reinforce the nightmarish qualities of the beast. The banner is now ready for painting!

I'll run this through the scanner and put a download on my website if anyone would be interested in this design for their own Dark Angels (or any other chapter; there is no specific mark on there).

Leave a comment below, or on the website. If I get enough interest I'll produce a page of designs to be used in your armies.
