Hey guys, I am currently wanting to start a space wolves army and the only model i have is logan grimmnar. I would like to base my army around him. Does anyone have any starter army lists of roughly 1000-1500 points that would give me a chance in a tournament? there is a upcoming one in my community in about 3 months and i would love to have an army by then that can hold its ground and punish the foes who stand in our way.

All advice would be grateful. Thanks!

Hi, I haven't played much with Grimmnar but most people would probably say that 1000-1500pts isn't really enough points for the dude (he probably needs 2500< to really shine).

I personally favor a mechanized approach and I stand behind the notion that SW wants to keep their enemies close but not in CC, we want to shoot them to pieces and maybe finish them off in CC when we see fit . We got OK CC units but we are not BA! So, IMO, try to get as many HW and other shooty stuff in your list as possible, and don't forget to have a balance between anti infantry and anti tank weapons!

I personally prefer:

- a Wolf Lord on a TWM (frost blade & SS) accompanied by a 4 TWC (not very shooty but its nice to have some CC capabilities and its a quite cheap and resilient commander)
- Vindicators (just love these babies)
- GH packs of 10 (MOTW, 2xmelta, rhino OR 9 GH, MOTW, 1xmelta, rhino, WG, combimelta(, PF), some people would probably advice you to drop the MOTW)
- 5 man GH packs in Razorbacks (with LC/AC, which is pretty neat and a great way to get more HW into the list)
- and most people would probably tell you to get LF packs with 4-5 ML (in a razorback), I'm not into these myself but I can see why other people are.
- Predators are always nice (AC & HB) as well but they always gets dropped in favor for vindicators or LF-packs in my lists (I find a pair of them really useful at 1000pts however).

There are other ways of doing a SW-list though, but I find that in this way you can make a versatile list which is fun to play.

Logan is too expensive for low points.
Loganwing is a bit expensive at this points level though no one is ever prepared for it.

So I think I go for a weird mix.

Logan+5multmelta longs fangs in drop pod, then some termies in drop pod, then some more wolf guard in drop pods.
Or Logan+5multmelta longs fangs in drop pod then 3 man squad razorback spam.

Bleh, I hope you guys don't consider yourself veterans. Proposing an all TDA army? Or ignoring the guy's requirement of putting Logan in a list? Terrible.

Logan can work in one kind of list at 1500. The Missile Spam list. He makes Wolf guard troops, so take WG and as many missiles as you can. That means mixing squads of guys in PA and guys in TDA. Since that is cheaper.

Logan - 275
5 Wolf Guard, 4 in Power Armor, 1 in Terminator Armor + Cyclone Missile launcher - 135 points.
10 Wolf Guard, 8 in Power Armor, 2 w/ TDA + CML - 270 points.

Have a few squads like that, then take 2-3 squads of Long Fangs. You will have over 20 missile shots a turn easy.

Stavkat - Lovely attitude, well I've been playing SW since like 94-95, that doesn't make me the best SW-player around, far from it. But considering my meta I believe that my approach is OK, its fun never the less. And I do believe its hard to make a good Logan list at 1500 pts, haven't tried yours though, hence I advised against him.

While I disagree with your attitude toward the other dakka members posting here I do agree that the Logan Missile spam build at 1500 points is the best build with Logan at this, and any, point level. I would suggest using the Logan LF MM bomb Pod along with the Missile Spam to give you some more options against high AV targets like Land Raiders and some nice AP1 shooting for Paladin squads and MCs.

Yeah, you are right. The "Drop Pod Bomb" (Logan giving Long Fangs Relentless, who can fire on two targets out of a Drop Pod) is definitely a useful option.

I would comment here but I never use Logan, and I hate Logan Lists. I've never liked that style of play and I'm really not good at it. That said, I still think 1k-1,500 is too low for a Loganwing list. It needs to be 1,750 bare minimum to really work well, and oddly enough I think the style is outclassed by Black Templars Missile Spam. For 270 points Logan gets a unit with 4 Missiles and a bunch of bolters. For about the same cost, Black Templars get 5 Terminators with the same number of missiles, and 5 Storm Bolters as well as a 2+ and 5++ save and a bunch of Power Fists. For 210 they get a unit of 3 Land Speeder Typhoons sporting 6 Missiles. Just seems a poor choice of army if all you want to do is Terminators with Missiles.

I did mean the cyclone spam but with drop pods. As such you need one squad in the good armour to beat back cc units.

129pt Razorback spam is to die for even with a huge HQ cost.

In any case Logan costs too much and though he might work at 'ard boyz points levels .
