Tail-spinning Tomb Blade Pilot

I went to Green Bay, WI for semis on Sat. About 24 players with a real mix. I would guess 3 GK - 1DE - 3 IG- 2 Tau- 2 Tyr.- 2 Wolves- 3 BA- 1 DA you get my drift.
Deamons are my best army, but with GK and DE being all the rage they just are too much of a liability to take to a 3 round tourney. I choose the Blood Angels for this next round, Ive played them enough, but usually make a mistake here and there.
My list
Mephy
Libby (sheild, preferred enemy)
7 Termies (5TH/SS 2 LC)
1 Furioso in pod with talons
2 priests (1 in termy armour)
2 x autodreads
3 MM Attack Bikes
2 x 5 Marines (flamer) in Land Raider
2 x 5 marines (melta) A$$aultcannon-Razorack
5 Assault marines (melta-fist) in Lazorback
Not much to it.
First round- Tau. Table- 4 seperate 1 foot x 1 foot ruins/area terrain in each corner and nothing else.
It didnt look like the kind of match-up that would go well for a victory point mission. He can sit back and ruin vehicles while wracking up VP and just move away. I couldnt let him get up in VP early, or I might not be able make it up as I catch his units. " Well lets see how my opponent plays" I think.
Its the messenger mission and our judge ruled just get you messenger into the enemy deployment zone at any point for the 500 VP.
We roll off and I get to go first. I want to set up and go first, just to move out and pop smoke.......but wherever I deploy that messenger....he can put a wall of guns in front. I give him the first turn. In hindsight......I should not have done that.
His list
2 x 3 Crisis suits with plasma missiles HQ
3 x 3 Crisis suits w/ plasma, missiles (elite)
3 x 2 broadsides/ drones
3 pirhanna
3 kroot squads (15 maybe 10)
2 devilfish firewarrior squads.
He puts broadsides in each corner and center so all three can see the whole board. Crisis suit EVERYWHERE. A pirhanna in the center...2 on one flank. Devilfish in center. Kroot will infiltrate.
Do I reserve and kill as I come...but risk having enough time to kill his stuff and get through the screen.....no. I should just deploy defensively and get that messenger in his deployment zone. One ruin has a bit more LOS blocking effect so I castle up with all 3 razors and a raider. The Raider with the libby for cover. The runepriest is in their as well. I figure his suits will be gunning for the land raider...so the messenger I have in my Lazorback...hidden away. 1 Other Land Raider is off on his own to keep my opponent honest and not just move all guns to face me. Bikes and mephy dig into the ruins near all my vehicles. Termies and Termy priest are deepstriking. Autodreads are with all the vehicles.
He then scouts his pirhanna to towards me (I didnt really know they could do that since I really dont face Tau that often.) My stomach churns as the unexpected meltas in range so quick is going to cut down on my survivability. I cast cover save and brace for impact. First pirhanna pens a Land Raider and "5" shield cover. Awesome!! Next 2 pirhanna miss....Yes! I might just survive this. Broadsides open up...and despite cover saves.....both raiders are WRECKED. His crisis suits also get by the 4+ cover saves and blow up an auto dread and one assault razorback. Squad in the razorback is pinned. That...was ....terrible. I am now down about 500 points....and a long road ahead of me....and there is a bunch of pirhanna all over my vehicles.
My 1. Assault Razor back and Las Razorback take cover behind a Raider wreck but open up and blow up 1 pirhanna. Squad that got out of that same raider- immobilize another pirhanna. Attack bikes have to try to stop that messenger who is about 16" from my deployment zone in a devilfish near the last pirhanna and his "Tau cover" keeps his devilfish around. My auto dread wants to finish the pirhanna in front of him...but I have to fire at that messenger. I shoot...get through the cover....and stun the tank. Mephy sneaks forward.....trying to keep hidden.
Top 2. My opponent looks over and says..."hey don't you have a drop pod?'" I had forgotten about it after that awful turn. My opponent says it can come in through natural reserve. In reality it just would have gone after the traitor. I was really bummed I had forgotten such an easy way to deal with that messenger. This game is going terrible. His shooting cuts a 5 man squad that had been forcibly evicted the turn before. I lose 3. Most shooting hit the bikes next wiping them out. A few errant shots at my squads in the ruins.
Bottom 2. Pod enters, termies sit. Pod lands and the melta blows up the traitors ride. Auto dread fires at the 8 man squad trying to widdle them down or force a morale check. He goes to ground and still looses 2. He holds. Razor backs (including the traitor) move up as far as possible to stay out of LOS from the majority of that army getting ready for a dash next turn. I assault a pirhanna and wreck it for some much needed points.
Top 3 He blows up the pod and the dread. My cover saves hold and he merely shakes both razors. Not bad since I was sprinting ahead next turn anyway. Drones kill whats left of the 5 men who got out of the raider the first turn. Squads and vehicles are being wiped out fast...I am not threatening him at all....and those pirhanna are only like 75 points...and that's all Ive killed. Auto dread is stunned.
Bottom 3 No termies yet. Things are dire now and I need to make a move...as pathetic as its going to be. Both razors move 18: and pop smoke. My mesenger is about 8" or so from his deployment zone...and his messenger didn't move last turn from going to ground. Mephy flies out of the ruins...fleets and barrels into those kroot protecting his suits. I cast no powers to try to lessen the blow, but I still kill 4. He rolls morale and "1" and "2". He holds....barely. Awesome. Mephy is locked in. The rest of the marines move to the edge of the ruins...ready to jump out and assaut if anything comes close. There is a large 20" gap or so between ruins so no venturing out unless absolutely necesary. Well...that was my big move. Jumped Mephy and two razorbacks moved forward. I shake my head thinking how horrible this looks.
Top 4 His fire warriors get up and embark in the other devilfish but that ends their move. Suits on his "empty" half creep forward awaiting the termies. His broadsides get through the smoke and wreck both razors. Perfect. Now he cant see my troops as I disembarked behind the wrecks. I could now leapfrog behind the wrecks to get that messenger in the deployment zone for some much needed VP. Mephy slaughters the rest of the kroot...and now he is loose.
Bottom 4 Termies arrive. I want to land them forward to try to kill his suits....but that devilfish has to be stopped. Now how to do it with footslogging termies?? I Place the termies 10" or so in front of his devilfish with the messenger and I scatter 6" away, but run 6" and spread out. Mephy jumps toward his HQ Crisis suits (as that is the more exspensive of the 2 types). I don't cast any powers again and after 4 wounds to him he makes morale!!! 1 small squad makes it to the broadsides and takes a couple casualties...but they stay locked. Messenger moves and runs behind the razor-wreck and gets in his deployment zone. Things are looking up.
Top 5 His devil fish moves sideways to keep out of the termies reach. His messenger is at almost exactly 12 " from my deployment zone. He has very little he can see so he pecks at my small squads back in cover near where my vehicles all started. Pirhana flats out to get near my messenger. Broadsides and assault marines do no damage. He piles in his kroot to hinder Mephy, but it does little more that get the kroot wiped along with his HQ unit. Mephy wipes out his command squad and is loose again. He unloads on the termies, but FNP goes a long way and I loose 3.
Bottom 5 Mephy hits another command squad and AGAIN he makes morale. Fist makes it into the broadsides. I kill a sheild drone, and when the fist swings...I hit twice. He HAS to place a wound on a suit...killing it. The squad is rundown. Termies move and try to assault his Devilfish and I am about .01" from contact.
Top 6 His Devilfish comes up just short of making my deployment zone. Mephy finishes another command squad . My opponent shoots more at the termies but the FNP is really working (making up for all the failed cover saves earlier).
Bottom 6 Mephy kills an elite Crisis team after casting powers. Termies just make the assault to the devilfish. Everything whiffs. Last swing with the T-Hammer......I roll one "6". I hit.....then.....I pen....then EXPLOSION. It kills 2...and the messenger breaks.
Wow what a game. I think I might have pulled out the draw. We add it up and with the messenger points-----I win by 480VP. A minor win. I am shocked as I thought I was playing for the draw from bottom of 1 forward. The messenger made all the difference..as did that last devilfish exploding. I get 3 Bonus points so I take 16 points into round 2. I am upbeat as that is a lot of points for such a terribly played game on my half.
Next round......Eldar.

Very good and exciting read! I would also argue that it wasn't a terribly played game. Sure going second hurt you in the beginning and your not knowing about the scout moves hurt, but imho it takes some skill and great planning to execute a win after such an early upset. Good job man.

Round 2. I drew Eldar. The Eldar player and I actually rode up together so I knew the game was going to not be tense. Tim has an awesome painted Eldar army and I hadnt faced it yet. Our table was VERY wide open. In my deployment zone there was a bastion in each corner 8" or so from either table edge. Tim had a Fortress of Redemption (the Dark Angel terrain piece) in his deployment zone centralized and sticking a bit out into no mans land. There are some Ageis defence lines scattered throughout the board but not much LOS blocking. We roll off and I win. I again give my opponent first turn even though he can redeploy and has a ton of bright lances, just so I can be the one to make the last second dash, and if he does it, I will have a chance to kill his troops.
His list
Eldrad
Yriel
Serpant of Banshees (lances)
Serpant of storm guardians w/ fusion guns (lances)
2 x Serpant of Avengers (lances)
2 x Wraithlord with lances/scatter lasers
3 walkers with lances/scatterlasers
Guardians with a lance platform
Rangers
He puts serpants all behind the fortress , guardians next to it behind some defenses. Rangers in the fortress.
I put a Land Raider behind each bastion. The libby goes in one with the priest and a 5 man unit. I put an Auto dread behind each. I put a lascannon razor by the libbies raider, and an assault razorback behind the other. Mephy is behind the assault-cannon razor. Bikes, termies, and 1 razor in reserve.
He shifts a little moving 2 serpants away from my libby raider to put more pressure on the other end. Yriel is with some avengers, eldrad with the banshees. He moves up and cant see my Land Raider with much. For lack of a better target he blows up the bastion in front of me.
Bottom 1. I blow up his storm guardians boat. I decide Im just going to hunt troops, nothing else for now. The rest of my shooting knocks a weapon off of an avenger boat, and I kill a ranger.
Top 2. His walkers come in and wreck my land raider near mephy. The troops hop into the bastion rubble. He immobilizes the other Raider with more lance fire. Im not too concerned because I have to wait to dash out into the middle for a while anyway.
Bottom 2. I forgat my Dread AGAIN and I do not roll to get it out of reserves. Termies arrive and I drop them front and center near the objective. I thought Id force his hand a little. Shooting kills 2 walkers and knocks the lance off of the third. My 5 man troop unit in the bastion hit the storm guardians but do little damage. Land Raider smokes that is still alive. I stun the boat with Yriel. Bikes flat out onto the board for cover.
Top 3. His wraithlords move around the fortress near Mephy and the storm guardian melee. They stun my auto dread. Yriel and the Avengers get out to bladestorm the termies, as well as assault them. Yriel whiffs rolling lots of 1's and 2's for to hit rolls, and the termy armour + FNP really kept casualties low. I probably lost 3 termies, but broke his squad, as well as killed yriel with a hammer. His other avengers get out to bladestorm the bikes, but they do just 1 wound. A terrible turn for him, and I think its nearly over. Also my small troops unit breaks and runs down the storm guardians.
Bottom 3. My Bikes + lascannons down a wraithlord. The termies attempt to assault the ranges but come up short. Dread arrives and pops smoke. I have 2 marines form my land raider alive and they hit a guardians unit, but are cut down. (Dam Witchblades forcing saves). Mephy walks out of the bastion ruins as well and eats the dire avengers who bladestormed the bikes.
Top 4. Wraithlord assaults the termies, kills 2 and takes no wounds. Bikes are cut down by banshees but one remains with a wound. Guardians try a shot at my dread but the smoke deflects the shot. Rangers immobilize a razorback.
Bottom 4. Termies take more casualties, but the priest stays locked with the wraithlord. Dread charges Rangers, mephy breaks the banshees, and my troops are moving to the center, by foot or vehicle if they have one.
Top 5. Wraithlord kills my priest. Shooting puts 3 wounds on mephy.
Bottom 5. The wraithlord takes every gun I have, but its killed, leaving the center empty for me to take.
The game goes on for two turns, but it is little more than mephy killing guardians and me blowing up Eldrads boat.
It was a good game, but Tim could not afford for Yriel to do no damage. That FNP in the termies really paid off. I got a major victory since one of my troops was run down by guardians, leaving me 4 in the center. I get 19 points, and am in 4th place gong into the last round. I look at my opponents list and its 46 Termies!!!!! This is going to be tough, especially if we roll up KP. I also need to get a big win (massacre or major) to really have a shot of winning. The table is 6 large area terrain pieces with not much LOS blocking terrain. "Well....this is going to be interesting to tackle" I think....and round 3 was about to get underway.

Game 3 Dark angels..........6 large pieces of area terrain, almost no LOS blocking terrain.
His list
Belial
9 Squads of 5 man termies. All the troops have missiles and TH/SS units. Elites are mixes of assault cannons/chainfists, powerfists.
2 Typhoons.
We roll off and I win again, and again I give him 1st turn.
He deploys as far towards the center that his army can be. All 46 Termies. ! speeder with them, 1 reserved.
I think for a minute about how to aproach this mob of death. I figure we wont know the mission till turn 3 so I would just castle behind my raiders and play for KP until the mission was known. I put a raider on the centerline against my short edge with a few inches to spare behind it. I put an Auto dread and Mephy back there. I place another raider next to it with the termies and another dread behind. My lasback hung out behind the raiders as well. Bikes and assault cannon backs hang in reserves untill the mission is known. Those units were just too vulnerable to have deployed without knowing the mission.
He walks forward shooting missiles into the raiders and manages to destroy a lascannon.
Bottom 1. I Drop the dread near my raiders. I figure the best defense until the mission was known was keep my army together. I get some firing lanes for the dreads, and I pop the speeder. Furioso smokes. I down 4 or 5 termies.
Top 2. He moves the mass of termies closer and unloads again. Furioso has an arm blown off. He is about 16" away from my army, but a few termies sit in cover about 10" from my furioso. He is a little cautious with mephy and the termies around.
Bottom 2. Both Assault razors come in. I come in the other corner of my deployment zone and fire a few errant Assault cannon shots at the back side of his army. I kill a termy from the assault cannons. Land Raiders plink another 4 termies or so. Dread barrels in and kills 1 more and stays locked with a squad. Termies move around my land raiders in the open, about 12" or so from the edge of his ball of death(but only 1 unit).
Top 3...we roll and Grab Terrain Features is the mission. He has the center, but I have 2 razors on the other side of the board. His speeder comes in and stuns 1 razor. His termies turn to face the new threat and he blows the other sky high...pinning the squad inside. The rest of his army shoots my termies (since chipping paint off paint off of land raiders wasnt working) He puts down 4 of them. The melee nets me one more dead termy, but costs me a dread.
Bottom 3. Attack bikes come in to help the razor back squads that are isolated. The living razorback pops smoke. My 4 remaining termies get in a land raider. The 5 man assault squad that just evacuated hides behind the raiders making a break for the terrain in my deployment zone. Land Raiders and dreads gun down a handful of termies. I eliminate 2 elite squads at this point and have whittled down a couple scoring units.
Top 4. My opponent begins to move his squads away from each other to go grab terrain features and head towrds my razorback units. His shooting immobilizes an auto dread. He also pops my last assault cannon razorback. He assaults and kills my drop pod. The speeder kills 2 bikes despite my cover. Belials squad with an apothecary/banner sits on one hill. A 4 man termy unit moves towards the razorback units and bikes. Another goes back to grab the hill in his deployment zone. Termy units are all over where my dread landed and both area terrain features were full of white terminators.
Bottom 4. I figure this is the turn to strike. Mephy and the raider full of termies along with the libby hit belial and his squad. Mephy puts 4 invul saves that insta-kill Belial and my opponent makes all four 5+ invul saves. The termies kill all the termies but one that are with belial. I lose the priest. Last Attack bike moves to engage his speeder just to draw shots from the 8 remaining assault marines near the razorbacks.
Top 5. Game could end and instead of dealing with mephy and my termies, the Dark Angels move onto all the terrain features except the one in my deployment zone. Mephy and the termies finish off Belial and his last bodyguard to clear one more terrain feature.
Bottom 5. All shots go to the 4 termies near my 8 assault marines. Mephy charges them and wipes the rest of the termies out. I move the lazback from behind the raiders to the center objective Belial used to be on to give me 3 terrain features. The Raiders move up to contest 2 of his terrain features...but one becomes immobilized. My termies and libby charge his terrain feature in his deployment zone and I drop 3. He kills my libby and a termy. Its 2v2 hammer action from here...but it is contested. Game ends now and I have a massacre. We roll and the game continues.
Top 6. He shoots one auto dread dead. He assaults another and rips an arm off and immobilizes it. He assaults my immobile raider and blows it up. He has a squad in one terrain feature uncontested now. My dread looses another arm but is kicking like a madman. The mini termy fight is a whiff on both sides.
Bottom 6. Mephy hits the last two termies fighting my 2 termies, and he makes every invul save. He puts 2 wounds on mephy. My empty raider contests his terrain feature. Game ends now and I massacre. We roll and game continues.
Top 7. He wants to kill my 5 marines contesting 2 features but he has to clear the raider off first. He wrecks the raider. I kill a termy with mephy and lose another wound on mephy. He spreads out his central termy squad to just contest one of my 3 terrain features. I move up to contest all his features and the game ends. I have 2 features and he has none. Major victory, but I get all 4 bonus points for 21.
Lots of draws/ minor wins on the top tables and I end up winning the tournament. I think back to how grim things looked during the Tau game and I feel fortunate to even qualify...let alone win.
I have a plan for the finals and I Cron't wait.

I played Hans in last round with my Deathwing. I didn't like seeing Mephiston for 2nd game in a row.
Not knowing the mission objective was my undoing. I should have deepstruck a couple units to cover table better. I had 2 speeders to shoot the Raiders, should have reserved both. That would have made you deploy slightly different. Belial and his psuedo command were misused by me. I left them in open and unsupported. Mephiston and termies from land raider ( BA termies had Blood Rage, which I reminded him to roll for) just destroyed them. Many little things and poor saves rolling wore down my forces.
I enjoyed my day, regardless.
Good job, Hans and good luck in finals.
Sidenote: That Dread must have not really wanted to fight, as I reminded you that he was on your carry tray for our game, too. 3 for 3 games!

Yeah it was a good game, and I dont know why I just never remembered my dread coming in. Every game I needed him early as his sole purpose is disruption. Guess it was just nerves, or lack of sleep....or both. As far as red thirst....I forget that all the time. I never really plan on getting it.....nor is it part of my plan when playing. Like I said earlier...I make a few mistakes with my Blood Angels as it is not really the army I play the best. I just dont enjoy watching my deamons get poisoned to death by DE.

After recent discussion with friends about last weekend...
Your turn 4 assault... Your Termies assaulting from Land Raider along with Mephiston. Termies should have struck at intiative 1 for going into cover during assault. Land Raider Godhammer DOES NOT have frag discharger. Your two lightning claw termies went off and killed my termie squad. Now I'm strictly assuming, but I think my 16 lightning claw attacks would have dropped your 4 termies, before you struck plus I had 3 thunderhammer attacks. That was a huge mistake. I recall that was the turn Belial made 4 out of 4 saves. Had we resolved correctly, I feel my squad and Belial would have killed Mesphiston over the next turn. Remember what Mephiston and those 4 termies did the rest of game...
What has me crying over this spilled milk? I asked you specifically if your Godhammer was an assault vehicle. We looked in codex and confirmed. Then I asked if it had the frags, you said yes. I didn't look in your codex as I had no reason to doubt after we just discussed and confirmed assault vehicle question. That is my fault for not being on top of your rules. I wanted you to know that I now know, after randomly reading BA codex this past Wednesday.
So to recap... forgetting dread turn 1 (3 out of 3 games), forgetting Blood Rage rolls, you running to bathroom during game, misplaying Terminator charge and me recalling all this, has me feeling like a kick to my taint happened during this game. Yes, we finished 7 turns, but game would have been really different.
Anyways, tighten your game up, as these oversights will be caught at the finals.
Sidenote for all the readers... Our game was essentially for 1st place of 'Ard Boyz Semis. Should have been played to higher standard and me not being so damn nice

That bites. It's the worst when someone "forgets" how a rule is supposed to work, in their favor, and that affects the outcome of the game.

Hah!! Actually lets recap that assault. Yes you did ask if the Land Raider was an assault vehicle...that is true. You did not ask if it had frag launchers. If you had asked I would have told you "no". I did not roll any dice to make the assault, since I did not enter cover with the termies until after the initial assault was resolved. Do you really think I would have risked assaulting termies going at Initiative 1 at Ard Boyz semi's thinking....this "marine" player probably has no idea my Land Raider has no frag launchers?? In fact I was kind of caught off guard you didnt know Land Raiders were assault vehicles. I was well aware of the fact there were no frag launchers and that is why I positioned those termies so THEY did not go through any terrain. Only Mephy did. He does have frag grenades. That is assault 101. Forgetting the dread was a mistake and I admit that....but that termy assault was fully legit. Talk to anyone Ive ever played against and they will let you know I would never pull anything like that.
Since you wanted to lay all your cards on the table here, as far as the "bathroom incident". I went to the bathroom while you deployed...and when I came back...you were STILL deploying. Then between your turn 2 and my turn 2 I had to go again since we had no break between rounds 2 and 3. When I come back you were standing by the table looking agravated and then a judge comes over talking to me about "slow playing". We were 20-30 minutes into the game and it was the bottom of 2. I cant help the bathroom was 100 yards or so away in the mall. I wasnt going to piss myself because you didn't want to wait 2-3 minutes. Then you were all "I didn't say anything, I swear." I was one of the first people done every round...and even though our game went 7 turns we still had 20-30 minutes before the game ended. So don't play the "I was a nice guy and this guy walked all over me" routine. You complained to the judge about me slow-playing you, and now you jump online with "looking back I think I remember a rule being played wrong" even though you are mistaken. I thought our game as a whole was a well played affair.
If you still feel slighted come on down to The Last Square in Madison and we can have a rematch. They have a tourney just about every month....or come down for a Saturday and we can squeeze in 2-3 games. Bring a couple armies, I could use some "practice" for the finals, getting "my rules straight" as you put it. I enjoy going to tournies all over and meeting lots of folks around the country and I would never want people think I "conveniently forgot" some simple assault rules.

Good Grief...
I know Crusader and Redeemer are assault vehicles. I was asking to confirm a Godhammer was also, an assault vehicle. I then asked if also had the frags, not frag discharger, as how I should have said, and you said, ya.
My Belial and 3-4 of 5 terminators were in cover of a piece of area terrain. Just by default you had to go into terrain to get base to base with 4 of my termies with 4 of your termies.
On being nice... I should have said sorry no Blood Rage rolls (too late), sorry that dread is destroyed in orbit, etc. I gave you benefit of doubt and allowed.
On the bathroom incident. Judge was walking around. I said you went to bathroom. He said "that is second time today that he did that". He then went to Head Judge Pat. They came back with the ruling of 15 point deduction if we didn't get to end of turn 4. I made judge aware at the time it happened so if time came into play we could get a time extension. Not much we can do on that if it was brought up later. I said nothing of slow play. Judge said "going to bathroom looks like stalling and slow play". His words, not mine. If you had taken a 45 minute dump and I said nothing we would have had issues. I covered my ass. Sorry it offended you.
Obviously, coming on internet is probably bad form, but my arguements are valid. Nothing can be done now. Let's leave it rest.
Good Luck in Chicago

Not trying to add any drama, but even with only 1 terminator out of cover, clever disembarking on a Land Raider and smart assault moves can result in only 1 Terminator being able to get into base while the others just have to move in coherency. Your required Defender's React can base the others and get them all into the assault.

Hmmm... I've never known Norbu to do anything dishonorable on the gaming table (or elsewhere) in the years that I've known him. While forgetting something like a pod in the midst of a high-stakes tournament is not all that surprising, "forgetting" the correct interpretation of rules to get an advantage is out-of-character and to my mind, very unlikely. He certainly doesn't need another army. Competitive gaming is a matter of pride and a challenge. Cheating to achieve that end would be antithetical to the reasons he games in the first place.
Too bad you couldn't finish up equitably... sounded like a pretty exciting game and a great final.

I too will be attending the finals in Chicago... as far as the rules discussion during the assault you have to engage closest to closest and then you get a 6 inch move to get into coherency... and you can wait for defenders reactionarty move.

I am pretty sure finals are actually in Minneapolis. I believe at the Fantasy Flight Gaming Center. Anyone who reads this and thinks its wrong feel free to post as I would hate to give out the wrong info on this, but everyone I have talked to is under the impression its in MN.

Yep, take this diagram for example:
Where yellow Triangles are the opponent's models with the green pentagon showing the boundaries of the area terrain. Red Crosses are the genestealers with a single lead genestealer being 4-6" away from the closest enemy model not in terrain. The remaining genestealers are grouped together roughly 2" behind the leader to ensure that they will not be able to get in B2B with models wholly in area terrain.
And just for clarification, it is not whether a unit is in cover or not, but whether the assaulting unit has to enter into cover that is the determining factor. If one of the greyknights was even a fraction outside of the bounds of the area terrain, this method would still work.
