I'm putting together an InDesign document that pulls data from a pre-formatted spreadsheet and dumps it into standard-size cards. The idea is to put the information into the spread, data merge it with the indesign template, then print and cut. It seems like it'd be way easier to have all the information on a unit on a single card for easy reference during play.

My question is; What would you want to see on this card? So far it's basic unit stats, wargear, special rules, and any magic if applicable. This is NOT designed to do math for you, simply to take your data and put it into the document.

Ok, I think I've nailed a layout. As I work on my army list I'll update the progress for this beta test. Once I'm sure everything works, I'll package everything up, including the spreadsheet template, as well as some basic instructions on how to do this.

That being said, this only works for those of us who have InDesign. I made it with CS3, so there may be some compatibility issues with older versions of the software, but who knows.

Thanks, all. Like I said, I've got some adjustments that I want to make before making it available (specifically using images in the datamerge for the unit graphic). Then it's all good!

edit: PS - Just call me Mumm. Cheers!

Just a thought, but does it have the option for multiple lines of stats? For unit champions or for units with more than 1 model type? (Like Skrox units or Giant Rats/Rat Ogres)

Unfortunately, the Datamerge feature will only use 1 row from a spreadsheet. As such, it won't accept more than one line of stats (as that would be two database entries).

What I CAN do is put in some blank spaces for champions' stats that a user can write in by hand. It's that or a card just for the champion.

Right, so I put in some space underneath the unit stats when I realized I CAN make fields for a champion! they're just going to be named differently. Thanks Jed for helping me get over that brainfart.

Alright folks, here's the beta version of the card generator. Note: YOU NEED ADOBE INDESIGN. Sorry if that's a problem, but if you got it, this should be excellent and prove to be a blast for yeh. Feedback should come! FEEDBACK MUST COME *ting*

Jed -- I think it's going to sit at this version for a little while on the fantasy side, however, I intend to make a set for 40k as well, after I get the latest version of the rulebook.

That is, unless some kind soul would post the 40k equivalents of data fields for units.

edit: Again, I see (as of this writing) that four of you have downloaded the kit. I'm curious to see how it's working for you (mostly, I'm nervous about the linked spreadsheet keeping the data fields in the InDesign document). Let me know!

Oh ok, well I don't play fantasy but I have a friend that does. I will send him the link of this post and hopefully he will tell you his thought on this unique unit card!

And I look forward to the 40K unit cards that you will hopefully make.

thanks, Jedend1
