Reading about Leman Russ originally being an Imperial Army commander it made me wonder, who has had the most dramatic retconning since Rogue Trader days?

The Squats. They were retconned right out of the 41 Millennium.

Also, IIRC, The Space Marines were originally Criminals in Power Armor, serving their Death Sentence.

That last one may be the heat stroke talking though.

Haha, I more meant individuals that still appear in current fluff, but somewhere in the Imperium there is a giant parking lot paved over the bodies of a hundred billion squats.

So we can't say the poor imperial guard who never used those death trap cardboard boxes, I mean rhino's and always used the superior chimera. They never had land speeders or raiders either. Anyone saying otherwise shall report to the commisar for "re-education"

Not so much a character, but an army. The Dark Angels were originally the Emperor's Finest. Literally, that was their nickname. They were led by the Emperor himself originally, and were responsible for the greatest successes of the Great Crusade.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I remember that . Though they also retconned the Deathwing story which was one reason I chose to do Dark Angels, not once but twice. The original story was a small force with captain and librarian going up against the genestealer city, which was turned into a single squad with the first retconn. Now it is back to a small number. Plus the armour colour change for no good reason

old one eye, goes from being a ravening bad ass, to getting killed by a a scout with one shot T_T and i think we would be remiss if we didn't include the red terror, half ravener, half mawloc, all sorts of awesome, and now all sorts of not in the codex any more. oh and sisters of battle as a whole...

I have to agree with Light. Ollanius was also retconned out of existence, and he was cool! Though I think it was an Ultrasmurf marine, not fists. I could be wrong though.

Ah... a lot of that is still true, isn't it?

At least the 'first' part, and the Emperor leading them during the earliest parts of the Great Crusade...

I have no idea if it's true, but I did hear a stopry years ago that the change in the Dark Angel's armour was driven by the release of Space Marine (the Precursor to Epic 40K), as black didn't look as good at Epic scale.

It was an Imperial Fist. The Ultramarines were chilling halfway across the galaxy.

Why do they always go to the Imperial Fists when they need a Chapter to beat up anyway?

Ollanius Pious is still around (don't have the reference atm but if I spot it again, I'll return to this thread. I'm sure it was a Dark Heresy rulebook though). He's now a patron saint of the Imperial Guard and is rumored to have done something fantastic in the service of the Emperor during the Great Crusade. What that something was is unknown, but his Saintdom exist on the principle that even the lowliest of servants can stand proud beside the Emperor in glorious sacrifice or something like that.

Maybe because they are stubborn? Either way, I don't like it. The IF are my fav, along with the Salamanders.

Didn't they do their epic stuff in UM colours around the time they sat down and did the whole armour through the ages, colour schemes for companies etc? Then moved onto BA for the release a couple of years later (93/94 i think, not sure, it's old age :( )

But that does remind me of another retconn, the company markings. They did have the UM right arm showing the company colour to begin with . And Deathwing in power armour!

I think the most Retconned are the Grey Knights and the Terminators.

Grey Knights go from Just TERMINATORS ALL THE TIME! to Daemon Hunters + Power Armor. Then Ultramarines with nemesis forceweapons.

Let us not forget about the Original Battle for the Imperial Palace it has gone from Little Battle = Huge Battle => OMg this battle is awesome => WOW massive battle across the entire solar system!

Then Horus's face. He went from native american to a Gangster to a Cry Baby.

Emperor same thing
Native American => Crazy Old Dead Guy => The Emperor of Mankind.

The Alpha Legion has gone from confusing => confusing = Confusing => *bangs head in frustration repeatedly*

That's not a retcon.. it's simply a special character not being included in the current codex. That happens from time to time. They generally re-appear sooner or later.

No, they weren't. Nothing was 'changed' about them. They were killed off. That's not a retcon.

Yes, he did. We know this. What I said above is how it's portrayed in the most recent source (He's now...). I'll need to find my source so I can cite this for you guys.

I thought the Imperial Fist marine and Custode actually just replaced him and were not him being turned into another form.

Tigurius was reputed to be 'half-Eldar' in RT, wasn't he? I'm not sure whether that or the Leman Russ retcon is bigger.

You're right. Had my facts mixed up. I thought they had been killed off in the 28th Millennium.

I was going to ask if this was considered a retcon, but someone above answered the question already, and it's not, but still...

Why did they kill off the Salamanders Chaplain Xavier? I managed to snag the model in an odd trade, and I must say it's a very nice model.

No, that wasn't Tigurius, he didn't exist until second edition. The Ultramarines had a half-eldar astropath working with them though. He was not a genetic marine though.
