I just finished reading Horus Rising, and I've fallen in love with the imagery of the Luna Wolves. It's made me think that sometime in the future I'd probably like to build a pre-heresy army based on Loken's company. Reading about Loken meticulously polishing all of his armor I just imagine them as these bright shining and beautiful dudes. I know that the general vogue in wargame miniatures is matte as matte can be, but I'd love to see them in a peal white. Has anybody seen any non-automobile models using this type of paint job? Would the nature of the paint make it to thick for miniature purposes?

There are plenty of pearlescent paints available

Have tried Liquitex versions with poor results, but were amongst my first minis that I painted and also was new to that type of paint.

TBH I won't be using these paints again. The effects don't look right on small models imho
Mithral over a white ground is very shiny

Just looked in to this, I don't think it would achieve the desired effect with another color but it should work perfectly with white.

If you mix Mithril Silver and GW Gloss Varnish, you can get a nice, pearly affect.

I'm as much interested in the iridescence as I am in the shine. I think you answered my main concern though, that the effect doesn't work well on such a small area.

I assume you airbrushed these on? Do you have any pictures you could post?

I have not used these products on my own models, I have spoken to the staff about them however and they have recommended them. The FW brand line does have a pearl series of ink washes that are airbrush ready. I have a regular yellow wash from FW that I have used with no issues and generally a nice effect.

I've used opalescent cake decorating powders to great effect and even after sealing they look really nice. Unfortunately, the effect is difficult to capture with a camera, so pics just don't do it justice.

They go on with a brush or color shaper, working best on a slightly damp surface much like a weathering powder. I'll see which brand of powder it is when I get home from work.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I have used these paints on some of my larger minis http://www.thecustompaintshop.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=42_2063_2174 and http://www.thecustompaintshop.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=42_2055_2132 . The problem with pear/shift paints, as mentioned before, is that they don't work well on small surfaces.

If you look in my gallery, at the Eldar, the larger vehicles work well but the jetbikes just don't have the surface area for the paint to be effective. Also the colour shift looks great (pig to photograph properly) on my nids in daylight, but again it only really comes to life on the larger creatures. Where I have used it on genestealer shoulder plates it is inefective, so I would say use it on your vehicles (my marine ones are getting a dose of pearl silver) but not your troops.

I was in my local crafts-store yesterday and they had some Airbrushing Colors from Createx, that had a pearlescent effect:

The closest I ever got to doing an effect like this on a model or mini was this here;

It is a scale model of a chopper, and it was painted in gold and then about 12 coats of Tamayia Clear Red were sprayed on top to give the candy look. On a mini I just dont think it would translate well, but let us know if you come up with something!
