Whilst going through a bunch of old models at my friend's house, I came across something I haven't seen for a very long time. The old style 'Eavy Metal bases, with the green lining. That got me thinking. Which style does Dakka Dakka prefer?

Brown. And if you choose green you chose wrong and you're not allowed to paint models ever again.

Seriously though, green is ugly.

Really? I quite like the green bases.

Wait, can I still paint my SW now? Please?

The brown is less jarring, but the green takes me back to 2nd edition when just about every model was on green bases like that...

Green bases look really bland IMO....and its not only that....for savage warriors wielding swords axes and guns, the bases just doesn't feel right with those models on top of them

I will forever remain humble because I know I could have less.

depends on if you are fighting over a nice green countryside or in the midst of an ice planet or a desert..

I dislike the bright green.. the brown edging at least makes the models look like they are standing on sod ripped from the ground..

Brown is more grimdark.

Outside of Eavy Metal, I prefer black base edges.

I love seeing old models on green bases because of the nostalgia.

I don't care what other people paint their bases.

I paint my ork bases green.

I plaint everything else black.

Anyone that does anything different from me is wrong. You have now been informed. Thank you.

I prefer the brown over the green. The green just looks very old style to me. I've still got some old Deathwing models complete with green painted bases, and paper banners.

I usually paint my bases grey, and try to give them a ruined city feel to them, as I play a lot of games with city terrain. I am basing my Grey Knights on purple bases for a demon world concept.

I go green.

Damn straight, I like the old-school look. I don't care if it's unappealing.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Can I choose neither? I'm not a fan of any color base rims, prefer black.

It very much depends on the figure. I paint my bases to match the look of the figures. My chaos and undead and green and black, my dogs or war are sandy with tufts of grass.

In the figures above I prefer the brown because it suits the figure better and it more neutral on the battlefield. They used to be purple tyranid army that appeared in white dwarf on occasion with white snow bases and they looked lovely. The problem it that it looks rubbish on most tables.

The older green looks okay though, it takes me back. I would point out that the green base above is the 'goblin green' of the late 90s, when they re-released the paints around 3rd edition 40K. It was much richer looking than the previous goblin green that was more pale. It looks more toy like IMO, I don't really like it and it didn't match the bases of the older figures at all.

The older goblin green looked like this.

It varries for me. A contrasting base like the old style Green basing has a very classic look and can also make the paint job of the miniature really "pop".

A more realistic brown basing has more of a diorama feel but doesn't usually offer the same dynamic contrast.

Also worth noting, the colors match pretty well to what the preferred color of the battlefield colors were/are in White Dwarf Battle reports. As battlefields have gone from green fuzzy mats to more realistic (if you can call RoB boards that) the bases have followed suit.
