Surprised? Who would be?

The Senate on Friday rejected the GOP-led House's bill to avert a government shutdown, intensifying a partisan standoff that many in Congress hoped to avoid. The vote was 59-36.

Democrats in the Senate, who are in the majority, oppose Republican efforts to roll back "green" energy programs to pay for aid for victims of Hurricane Irene and other disasters

52 Democrats decided that $100 million in "Green" investments, like the oh-so-successful Solyndra debacle was more important than a $3.65 billion grant to Hurricane Irene victims.

The important question then is: Why do Democrats hate hurricane victims?

its all about trying to win the next election... the actual work of "government" doesn't even take a back seat... it's buried in the trailer somewhere.

Is the GOP trying to lessen the guilt they hopefully feel over all the people Bush allowed to die in New Orleans when he sat on his hands and dragged his feet for days, or could this just be political grandstanding and politics as usual...

Why, because they can't reach their bootstraps, of course.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

What happened in New Orleans was and still is a travesty, and seems to have been completely forgotten about by the media. In amongst the government failure and all the stories of 'refugees' leaving the area and being turned away at gunpoint by police, and Dick Cheney stopping the power diversion to some local hospitals so his oil processing line would be unaffected, let's have some comedy:

Interesting. I knew Bush directed the Hurricane towards the black section of New Orleans, but I didn't know Darth Cheney shut down hospitals so the company he no longer worked for could get oil. Could you tell us more about this latest evil Republican plot?

Whether or not it was related to any interest in Halliburton is an open question, but that is something Cheney did.

Wikipedia wrote:Vice President Dick Cheney was also criticized in his role in the aftermath. On the night of August 30, and again the next morning, he personally called the manager of the Southern Pines Electric Power Association and ordered him to divert power crews to electrical substations in nearby Collins, Mississippi that were essential to the operation of the Colonial Pipeline, which carries gasoline and diesel fuel from Texas to the Northeast.[20] The power crews were reportedly upset when told what the purpose of the redirection was, since they were in the process of restoring power to two local hospitals, but did so anyway.

Usually when I see these types of things I like to search to see what the VRWC's response is. Interestingly enough, the link from Wikipedia doesn't work. The only sites I've seen for "Cheney Katrina colonial pipeline" are from left-wing sites (Liberalpedia (the stupidity there is astronomical, but, admittedly, not as funny as Conservapedia), Mother Jones, Democratic Underground, etc.). I'm not necessarily disputing that it happened (admittedly, it could be a collective delusion, not uncommon), but I think that the whole story hasn't been told.

However, I'm not going to believe this simply on the word of some lefty websites.

edit: And to further note: this doesn't explain why Democrats hate the poor and want them to starve because they can't get hurricane relief.

So they wanted to cut 100 Million from green energy to pay for 3.64 Billion worth of aide to hurricane victims...

So instead of 3.64 billion they’ll be getting 3.54 billion… those poor SOB’s.

Maybe it’s the same reason the republicans didn't want to pay for any of the health problems contracted by 9/11 first responders in the months after the twin towers fell.

Exactly.

THey prefer hot dogs. Twelve inches of hot, salty meat down their throat.

Jokes aside? Blocking 2.7% of the aid because it's cutting into alternative energy funds isn't exactly villainous, considering how much money is still being spared in comparison.

It's not like certain people who try to claim we should stop paying any and all welfare, social security, medicare/medicaid, etc just to try to balance the budget I think the old saying goes something like "one shouldn't get so caught up in the present situation that they lose sight of the goal". Something both parties need to remember, if they ever stop focusing only on what gets them electedd.

The original story came out of a local paper in Mississippi, and it was then picked up by a number of outlets, including Salon and [url=http://www.wkyc.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=40633]this[url] Cleveland broadcast station.

Is that what is implied when a budget compromise is rejected?

Either way, the proposed cuts were 1.5 billion, not 100 million.

To be honest, I don't know why I bothered responding to a thread that had a statement as ridiculous as..

and
Why do Democrats hate hurricane victims?

and

why Democrats hate the poor and want them to starve because they can't get hurricane relief.

Edited for rule #1 violation. You can digress without being overly rude.

Not necessarily, but that's the inference that many posters here have when Republicans object to some part of a bill and don't vote to pass it.

I just figured it would be fun to point out the double standard.

I hate them because they didn't take adequate insurance and if they didn't take the insurance, then, as we've seen with recent GOP leadership 'debates', apparently we're supposed to let people just die.

Of course, if Republicans were actually concerned about the hurricane victims they'd just pass the bill without trying to force the Democrats to cut money elsewhere.

They aren't, of course, because they can trust in their loyal footsoldiers to head out into the world and post nonsense like the OP.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I have faith that once we dig down, we'll find its George Bush's fault.

Wow, I didn't see this before I posted. I'm like the Carnac the Magnificent of Texas!

I should note before anyone jumps me, that I have a personal stake here. I had one of my few remaining direct blood relatives, in a hospital at the time and died on the transport out when they finally evac'd the hospital.

That they're obstructionist, or that they hate the beneficiaries of the provision that they dislike?

It seems more like you're putting words in the mouth of a generic person, which is a fairly dishonest means of trying to illustrate the existence of a double standard.

Has the US government ever required budget cuts to release disaster aid? I can't think of any other time that has been a mandate by one political party or the other. So to suggest that Democrats held up a run of the mill disaster relief aid is disingenuous at best, blatantly lying at worst. Republicans Tea Party folks insisted on budget cuts to release aid, aid which would have normally been a routine thing. I'm not sure why you'd try to compare this to anything, since it is literally a first.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Bush was channelling the Tea Party from the future, which proves how forward-thinking he was.
