Hey, I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but in WD382, there is NO next month anouncement. any thoughts on this?

They realised a month in advance teaser is defeating the purpose of telling people 1 week in advance of stuff going on the shelves as people guessed what was coming?

I thought it was the fact that the marketing department outsourced themselves to the future, thus all advertisements will be one month after the product is release.

Honestly though, they are probably saving their ink due to the fact that there are no new major releases aside from Finecast for the next month or so.

It's because of Dreadfleet. The way the release schedule works now is that apart from this month WD comes out on the last Sat of the month with a "coming soon" back page. On the same day the Pre-orders go up for said product and them 1 week later it is released. The big release this month is Dreadfleet and because of GD etc we already know about that so that's why there isn't anything on the back page.

Lookout for next months issue on the last Sat of October and you'll see the "coming soon" page for whatever comes out the first week of November, probably Necrons.

Which makes no sense because not everyone who has the mag would know about GD. Doesnt' GW want WD to be the primary source of info?

I think their strategy is to make it that you can only get information from their shops thus 'forcing' people to go to their shops to find out anything about future releases. Even now White Dwarf is sent to subscribers after the shops get it, so if you want to hear the latest stuff you're better off going to their stores. I think it'll just annoy people.

I haven't even looked at White Dwarf over the last couple of months though because I don't go in GWs and I haven't seen a copy in newsagents.

I heard it's because GW is having cash flow issues and is not able to put out new products at the moment. That's also why there were no new products at Games Day. Until they get back on their feet and pay their vendors there's literally nothing in the pipeline.

No.

Not really.

But I'd love to spread this rumor across the internets and watch GW squirm.

Well I was in my local GW and the guy there told me that GW now have released all their models and will now simply release them over and over again with alternate colours for the picture on the boxes because that works so well with Space Marines.

While I am enraged about the lack of Necron news as I think most 40k players are, (because who doesn't want a better Necron army to face, even if they aren't actually collecting them,) I am also curious about this. Do we know which units are coming out in Finecast?

What? Depsite all the drawbacks of Finecast I don't really want to deal with metal Plaguebearers....

For this to work GW would have to actually monitor what goes on in the Internet. Guess where the critical flaw in your plan is?

There was the dreadfleet 'hint' page with Count Noctilus a few pages before, which was (I believe) intended to replace the coming soon page. With Dreadfleet being Octobers big release, there was no sense in putting anything on the back page.

As for the inevitable "why didn't they put Dreadfleet on the back page" question, I can only guess that would be because they didn't want people knowing for sure that it was coming next month. The "check us out on the 17th" was a) a good way of keeping the secret and b) a good way of getting people in store on the 17th, who would then buy that extra tub of paint that they'd not got round to buying.

It's all just a big sales drive and marketing fail.

Semi off topic, I learnt at GD that if you'd don't like the secrecy act, you can write to them saying it's a stupid thing. Explain why, give a valid point, and if enouh people say so then they'll stop and will go back to putting up pre-releases etc.

I heard that GW invited people from North Korea to train them in modern marketing and from Eastern Germany to train them in building an Iron Curtain around the Nottingham facilities real fast. All staff has to sleep in locked sleeping halls within the building. No mobile phones or cameras allowed. Once a week, staff can have visitors from outside, divided by glass and talking via phone.

Actually WD policy doesn't make any sense. Finecast new releases are constantly kept secret. Official advertising through WD for Dreadfleet begins after it supposedly being sold out at GW. This weeks tool releases have been kept secret from stores until this evening and they have to look for the upcoming WD to see what this really is. GW says that the WD is the main marketing tool within stores, but it is sold out immediately. GW says that WD is filled with more substantial content, but October WD is only advertising one product. They say WD should get people away from the internet, but customers and GD visitors always hear: Watch the website for news. And so on.

There is one key inaccuracy here the "coming soon" on the back page isn't about this months releases its a about the following months, with the system you describe the WD wouldnt cover products until they had been out for a month.....
Also the OP is saying there is no "coming soon" on the back page of the October 282WD which is all about Dreadfleet and any coming soon would be about Nov releases he isn't talking about the September 281 issue which also had no coming soon on the back page but did have the teaser flyer for Dreadfleet.

The real new here is it looks like the coming soon at the back of WD has been dropped now as well because apparently even confirming something is coming a month early like they did with OK even if there are no model pics is still too much information....

I don't know, I think White Dwarf is on the right track. Pretty much every successful major company in the world has a magazine that they turned into a glorified catalog to advertise limited release products that are already sold out by the time the magazine hits the shelves. So, GW must be doing something right.

On a side note I suggest to everyone to check out the price tag on "meh"fleet.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

This white dwarf was to be released in september, for october, so they didn't need the incoming, since dreadfleet was known. the next wd at the end of this month will have the next incoming. most likely, it will be necrons. all i have to base this on is the fact "I BELIEVE" it will happen.

Teasers for new releases will now be geocached and only reachable by purchasing a new "GW Propriety" navigation tool. Regular GPS devices can be used, but only with a GW conversion chart.

Australia will be transmitted coordinates based on a flat earth model and they will just have to like it.

Just saying thats pretty high for a game you'll play twice with models you cant use outside of it. I wasnt interested in it before, and at $135 CAN It might as well not even exist.

I have plans to write rules for each and every one of them for Uncharted Seas, in time. I doubt I'll ever play Dreadfleet, I just wanted the mat and the models. I like models. It's why I do this.

1.) The September issue has been released last Saturday in August, including an "incoming Dreadfleet" page.
2.) The October issue is released 1st October (or 20th September in Holland) and doesn't have an "incoming" page (confirmed). That's what we are talking about.

Claiming that the September issue didn't have an "incoming" page and the October issue will have one is not helpfull.

If the Necrons are due in Nov (because the chances of it being Dec are pretty much 0) then they will be featured (that is full reveal of 1st wave models because its the month of their release...) in the Nov WD issue 283 which will be released on the last Sat of Oct, any "incoming" for them would have appeared on the back page of the Oct WD issue 282 which normally would have been released on the 24th of Sept but has been delayed until Oct 1st, but the OP got his issue early and is saying it doesn't have an "incoming" on the back page which was actually revealed about a week ago when somebody else who ogt theirs early reported that apart from a little finecast and Dreadfleet the only new releases in it are new modeling tools. So short of GW throwing something up one their web page the 1st we will see of the Necrons (if they are still slotted for Nov) will be in the Nov WD where it wont be a teaser because that will be the WD corresponding to their release.

This is really just a continuation of their new policy of no news = great news (for shareholders). If there wasn't so much background economic stuff going at the moment, I'd love to see some of the actual sales against forecast sales for different releases since this came into effect.

I suspect that the saying of that at GD was just "we really care" marketing/PR speak and is not really the case. GW's recent decisions seem to indicate that they make important choices based on divination of cast chicken bones.

Maybe someone realized WD was leaking "too much" information... and they had to put a stop to that.
