So I play 40k and have pretty religously the last 6 years. I have a substantial Dark Eldar army as well as Chaos Space Marines. I am looking for a change however. The more I see of Fantasy the more I want to learn about it. I know next to nothing about it and think it looks like fun to play.

I do have a dilemma though. Seeing the ew Ogre Kingdoms in the new White Dwarf got me very interested in them. I love the models and the playsyle is totally different than what I am used to. I like the idea of having only 30 models on the field for a 2500pt game. I know they are an in your face army and very resilient. I would not need to buy many figures which would help my less than expansive wallet, so that is a plus.

On the flip side there is High Elves. They look awesome and fit my playstyle nicely. They hit hard in almost every phase I am told and take quite a bit of skill to play, which is nice. They are not forgiving to those who just rush them forward and need to use strategy for them to succeed. Also, there is the Island of Blood. Very cheap for all of the people that you get. There is not one thing in there i would not use. I would prolly buy multiples of them to get more Seaguard and Swordsman.

So I gues what I am asking is, for some experiences playing either army. I am leaning towards Ogres more for a change up of play style, but go back to High Elves because I can get what I want for relatively cheap and they fit my playstyle as well.

Anyone give me any insight? Appreciate anything you guys can say.

Hmmm. Ogres would certainly be cheaper, due to their small amount of soldiers in play.

Someone said tghe costs might balance out die to the big creatures and the Heros of the Ogres are so expensive. Whereas, with the Elves, the bigger creatures arent a necessicity and can be added much later if need be. Any validity to that?

Are both armies competitive? Fun to play?

Ogres are easier to play and still pretty cheap.
Also HE players are forced to use a certain character (or his little clone) or struggle to win.

Convert characters from other models and that problem is solved.
As nice as the monsters are, ogres can easily get by on... well ogres, alone.

Yes, ogres are fun in the brute force smash you up way, HE are fun in the finnece sinergy way.

Ogres are NOT an easy army. they are fun, but their playstyle requires finnese and careful planning. They rely on synergy and some shrewd timing to get to function correctly. They arn't a point and click army.

But if you like the models and the fluff(it is so ZOMG!!!AWSOME) then you should play them.

go and look around http://www.ogrestronghold.com/ to get a feel for the best army in Warhammer

I'd say Ogres are easier than the baseline. That's not an insult. You can make them be as strategic as any other race. But the fact of the matter is their Core choices are so scary that if you did nothing except take them, you could still pull off some victories because other armies could get steamrolled.

It's a bit ironic that at higher levels of play, say at competitions, you might even do better doing that because the enemy wouldn't be expecting it past the first few rounds. They would be high magic and dispel counter-this and that strategy, only to see 70 bulls run at them.

maybe, but those 70 bulls are expressely weak against the uber spells like Purple Sun and Pit.

and without buffing or support they can crumble very quickly.

Ogres are a fairly easy army to get the concept of, but the actual mastery takes time and experience. The learning curve is quite steep.

Ogre gunline is doing exceptionally well. Lead Belchers have enough range to advance and fire, then back away firing. The only sure way to force them into combat is to close in enough where they must charge you; which gives them the +1 combat res and impact hits.
My scout + poison maneaters with brace of handguns are doing very well too. They've got so many options between shooting, marching into the back field, or charging into combat, it makes it very tough for an opponent to deal with them.
I think the big advantage of ogres is that any unit (outside of gnoblars) can ignore most small flanking units.

The critical part of ogres is managing panic checks. You've to to line up any bait units to not flee through others, spread out enough so you don't panic yourself, but be close enough support each other.

I'd say the only point and click thing in the ogre book is cramming the Hellheart down the opponent throat.
