I've made no bones about it, I don't like space marines, but with the box sets and lots of marine stuff I bought when Apoc came out (to put some marines with my guard to buff them up) I have a fairly healthy amount of marine stuff. Was thinking about making some marines, so my question isn't the typical "what chapter" question but a new one.. what codex? The chapter will be my own, the fluff story behind them will be my own (based on the codex) but I just don't know what codex to base it off of. The plain codex? BA? SW? GK? Is the BT codex still valid? Maybe some DA? Got DA pieces too...

Vanilla Marines. The versatility of the Character HQs makes it more suitable for DiY chapters, in my opinion.

You can always run any codex as a custom chapter, but vanilla marines give you more actual other chapter HQ options. That said, if you want to run dark angels or black Templars as your custom marines, there is nothing stopping you.

Go with Vanilla, then use Shrike to give your entire army fleet

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.
