Hi everyone,

what paints or washes are best to you on guns? I have seen some really awsome guns but there has been no tutorial on how they did it or what washes they used. Any ideas?

It really depends on what gun your painting, generally a base coat of gunmetal with a quick drybrush of silver with a black wash will give you good results.

Oh okay, well when I get my Blood Angels I will perhaps buy these paints/washes thanks.

Any other ways.

I prefer mithril silver followed by a wash of gunmetal.

I do not have any of my army, but this is what they look like
http://media.photobucket.com/image/mithril%20silver%20guns/LanthierFamily/Warhammer%2040k/TrentsBlackLegion/BlackLegion-Bolter-Front.jpg

You can make them more or less grimy depending on how much you water down the gunmetal. The way I apply it is I put down a coat of mithril silver, then drybrush a think coat of gunmetal over it, then I take a dry brush(without water or paint on it) and sort of dust it over the gunmetal, it leaves some on the flat surface, while still leaving it in the crevices.

I like to take an efficient approach. I paint most of the surface area on my bolters is Vallejo Black Gray, a really nice dark gray. Then all the metal bits get a coat of chainmail,a nd then the whole bolter gets a nice layer of Badab Black, instant shade on everything.

This was the best picture I could find that illustrated the effect.

Personally I drybrush boltgun onto a black base then drybrush a small anount of mithril. Gives a worn mechanical look imho

Well, a base coat of brass or bronze then, through mixing the paintsand doing several drybrushes, work your way up to the highlights in chainmail or boltgun metal. Wash in brown ink/ vallejo smokey ink(really grimy look)/ or flesh wash, then go back over with a dry brush to get rid of the shiny look of the wash, unless you want that look on the guns.

just did some rusty choppas to good effect, started with base of black, drybrushed gunmetal, layered washes in spots (as metal doesnt rust evenly naturally) of devlan mud, gryphone sepia and badab black, then i finished the cutting edge with a small amount of mithril silver (as if the ork found it, sharpened it, and is now krunkin 'eads wiff it) similar effect could be done with the guns, just leave out the mithril silver, and focus more of the black on the muzzle (powderburn)

I just give them a base of black, a heavy drybrush of Boltgun metal, a a black wash and then a highlight of chainmail.

Then of course you can paint the gun casing if you want to (i do so i can then put my IW chevrons on them)

See, I do my IW chevrons first with a basecoat of yellow, black chevrons, then light drybrush of boltgun for weathering.

Sorry, i meant to say i put another light coat of devlan mud over the chevrons once i'm done. I find the black makes th chevrons loo a little too dark.

I generally just use gunmetal with a badab wash. I've always hated guns with colors on them besides brown and silver (wood and metal).

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

might have to try that. basing with a foundation would avoid the shiny shadows that you sometimes get when chaos balck reflects the light.

Oh cool, I have seen them with those shiny shadows, they don't bother me but I suppose they look better without.
