That quote can be true of almost any independent character without eternal warrior in the game. It's a matter of how a character is used that makes or breaks how good the character is, not his stats and special rules. Additionally for the record, he does have a 5+ invulnerable so even those listed weapons are not guaranteed to to kill him in a single hit.
There is a reason that nobody uses him, and that reason is that he brings nothing to the table that Khârn does not for 60pts cheaper. Khârn hits on 2s, Typhus hits on 3s against anything WS4, and 4s against everything else, Khârn wounds T5 on the same roll as Typhus, T4 more easily, and T6 the same if he charged, both weapons are power weapons, Khârn has more reliable attacks, higher initiative if charging and can Sweeping Advance, plus he can ride in a Rhino, where Typhus is stuck walking or hitching an expensive Land Raider ride.
The only things Typhus brings is an extra wound, T4(5) (which means bugger all to a powerfist), the potential for more attacks (but also a 1/6 of not being able to attack at all), a 2+ save (again, powerfist doesn't care) 2 psychic powers that the vast majority of armies who care can nullify on a 3+ or 4+, and
FNP (powerfist, once again, doesn't care).
Yes, powerfists kill most
ICs in the game, but no matter how you look at it, a 5+ invulnerable doesn't make him good, it just means that out of 3 powerfist wounds, he'll only be dead twice instead of three times.
This time, it IS Typhus' stats that let him down, because he'd be a great character if that T4(5) was true T5 instead.
That's why you put him in a squad of chaos termies!
And there you have a large points sink that a demolisher cannon can wipe up nicely. Loading them into a Land Raider makes them even more pricey, with the bare minimum cost being 540pts for Typhus, a barebones
CSM LR, and 3 naked termies. Putting him in a squad of termies also doesn't solve the powerfist problem.
Now, i'm not saying Khârn does, either, he does not, but for an
SC, he's every bit as good as Typhus for 60pts less, and doesn't have a 1/6 chance of self-harming.
My initial statement is still true, he isn't as great as he first seems. T4(5),
FNP, psychic powers and the likes are nice, until you reach combat. If you want a combat monster, don't get Typhus, get Khârn or a Twin
LC Khorne Lord for a lot cheaper; the Manreaper is only more effective than Khârn in a prolonged combat against T6, or a combat where Khârn charged T7 or greater, but how often will that happen? I'm going to say not enough to warrant the use of Typhus, especially when a Nurgle Chaos Lord is the exact same in combat, only with greater
WS; if you want psychic powers and good combat skills, get a Daemon Prince.
