Subject: Daemon army Lava Snow basing ... just hear me out!
|
 |
Horrific Horror

Hey all! I am working on my daemon army and I am just starting to base them, I dont like boring bases so I want to try something different, tell me what you think and maybe some tips I am not new to basing I just stink at it! So here is the idea, I would like to make it look like the daemon are corrupting the ground they are walking on so lava is coming out of their feet but the base is a snow base so it looks like the snow is melting and lava is coming up from it under their feet. I hope this is clear I think its a cool idea just not sure where to start.
Thanks!

I think that if you are just starting to base that combining snow and lava, two independently difficult effects to do well, isn't the best idea. It's a cool idea, maybe one to shelve for later.

ok this is what I am thinking:
Step 1: Paint the lava coming out of the feet on the base I
Step 2: use some red basing sand outline the painted area's then dry brush the top black
Step 3: using regualr basing sand fill in the rest of the base , dry brush white
Step 4: put snow on the sand parts lighter towards the lava area so it looks like its been melted.
Does that sound like it would work?

Cool, but still a little overdone.
In my opinion, i think itd be a cool base just to do plain green grass. Add a little unexpected peace to your deadly chaos daemons.

Maybe a little haha. I think tall grass would look pretty cool.

The best way would be to paint it like a lava-base first, with the lava concentrated on the models of course. Are you going to have the models standing in the lava, as it is a liquid, or just having the stone nearby start to melt around their feet, ala the Avatar of Khaine style? There is a brilliant Avatar of Khaine who has snow and that glowing hot look. It took me ages to find it as the creator has taken down his CMON pics, so it's only up on the GD winners sites. I give you, Aaron Lovejoy's amazing Avatar:-
You can do slush by mixing a fair amount of water effects in with the modelling snow, rather intuitively. Do a search for lava, snow, water and slush tutorials in the Tutorials sections and you'll be well on your way.

I always thought it would be a cool idea for an evil race to be based with the effect of the model killing the grass, flowers, plants, etc in their path. So every time they take a step, all the plant life around their feet wither and die. Their evilness is corrupting even nature as they walk across the lands. Sort of like in Fable when you become evil, you sort of have that evil death-like aura about you.

Sounds a good idea but why not consider having some demonic symbols appearing under foot in the snow.
That might work quite well also.

First crack:
GS rolled onto base, bubbles made with GS blobs and pencil tip.
Sand and PVA applied.
Black undercoat, lava painted white with blending at edges. Light white drybrush on edges of ground around lava.
Blood Red with a little bit of Daler & Rowney Process Magenta painted on. Adeptus Battlegrey with a bit of Bleached Bone mixes for drybrush highlight.
Mixture of baking powder, PVA and water used to build up snow. Water Effect painted on the ground next to it to represent meltwater; not letting the 'snow' dry first seems to have caused a ring of white residue. Skull White and Ice Blue added to snow mixture and painted on top. Middle of lava blended to a light orange.
Not really happy with this result. I think the main issue is that lava is a light source, and snow is a crisp reflective white that looks a bit 'off' if it's not reflecting a blue sky; they've both got to look vivid to be convincing. Possible solutions:
- OSL on the Daemon model; red glow underneath, blue glow all around.
- Oil paints can get more vivid colours than acrylics; maybe tinker with them.
- Darker and more desaturated colours on the Daemons to make the OSL more striking.

Even better, daemonic symbols burning into the plants, snow, ground, and whatever else, totally corrupting all natural life.
