I don't know anything about IG, but I feel I must step in here. It's competitive.

Mech Guard is what you are looking for:

Manticores with hydra in heavy support

Vendettas in the fast attack

Vets in chimeras (mix of plasma and melta)

CCS with plamsa or melta as HQ also in chimeras

Leafblower is the most competitive IG list IMO.

The true Leafblower IG army no longer exists thanks to allies being gone...and not everyone plays 2500 points.

Leafblower honestly wasn't that good to begin with....people just didn't know how to deal with it. It's fairly easy to counter.

Mech Guard is probably most competitive.
Hybrid is a close second (if done right).

True dat, but I was more refering to the style of having Hydras, artillery, big walls of Chimeras with Vets in them with heavy weapons, and the only thing that is allying in the true leafblower was the Inquisitor IIRC.

I run something similar, except I trade 2 of the Vet squads and one of the Vendettas for a Blob, a Flamer PCS in Chimera, and a Psyker Battle Squad. I feel like it's more competitive that way honestly...you need the blob to soak up charges and buy you an extra turn of maneuver. It's also nice for tarpitting those units that are going to get in close and give you hell with multiassaults.

The PBS is necessary for dealing with non-fearless Deathstars that you can't just shoot away, ie: Thunderwolf Cav and large Hammernator units.

That is my staple 2500pt list - which you can scale down to 2000pt pretty easily. Once you hit 1750 and under, it changes a little more drastically and can even be switched over to various Russ types over artillery.

so what will this list look like at 1500pts. does it make it less effective?

It changes a lot, I feel. Its tough to fit in platoon elements, so Melta Vets are best. Here, the Russ variants tend to shine over the artillery, because there aren't enough Chimeras to hide them behind. PBS are nice if you can fit them and depending on the meta, Hydras are nice. Just keep in mind that with Guard, efficiency and redundancy are key!

There is no one IG list that is the most '733t'. If your totally new to IG, no list posted here will help you because you will not run it to the specs of the person who posted it. Simple fact is inexperience will destroy any list.

There are three core truths to WH40k to making a winning list.... good list, good player, good dice. If all three work, your nearly impossible to defeat. Any two and your going to win 50-75% of the time. Only 1 working for you and you will be lucky to win 25-50% of the time.

IG is one of the better Dexs out there because there is multiple winning lists that can be created out of it, unlike some of the older codexs that are still legal.

Buy the dex, start small, play it in friendly games and learn, learn, learn.

Been playing 40k on and off since 89.
Armies...
Orks, Eldar, Lamentors, Pre-Heresy EC, CSM EC, and IG.
