Subject: Coral for Tyranid Terrain?

Hi.
I'm starting to make some scenery, and was thinking that coral would be good form making Tyranid bio-structures. There are 2 minor problems with the idea. The first, relatively minor, problem, is that the coral would probably need to be painted (not a huge problem, I know, but worth checking-as far as I know, most commercially available coral bits-assuming they're dead-are pale and chalky). The second problem is obtaining ethically sourced coral. It might sound a bit daft, but a lot of the coral buisness is contributing to the decline of reefs the world over-I don't know if anyone knows any good places to get responsibly sourced coral?
Just a thought.

Dead corals? You can get a lot of them for free on the beaches here. Live corals, however, let's just say environmentalists and people who love nature will kill you if you take them.
How near are you to a beach, and do those beaches possess a nearby coral reef?
|
Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess. |

Isn't coral brittle?
Terrain pieces need to withstand being schlepped around and having figures put on them and so on.

You might try an aquarium store, probably get some fake coral. Or get some clay and poke a bunch of holes in it

Corals are a highly endangered ecosystem. Commercially sold stuff is probably illegal or at least problematic. And dead corals are no match for living corals in style, they are parely the skeleton.
Best solution is aquarium decoration. Looks like living corals, is prepainted, readily available and quite cheap. And I also use it as tyranid terrain.

Thanks. The UK resin coral looks like jst the stuff, although it would need to be painted. Pity that commercially available real coral is illegally sourced, but oh well.
But yes, the resin coral is going on my favourites bar.
