Razorback spam w/TL-Plasma, Lascannon has been popular. It depends on what kind of army you want to field. Sternguard units are popular elites, as well as termies. Riflemen dreads, HF/MM Land Speeders for fast strikes. Vindicators are horridly nasty, you'll want one or two.

Things have gone mechanized since 3rd edition. I originally started back in 1st. I've got somewhere around 3k+ SM in infantry and NO vehicles(well one dread from AOBR).....so I don't field competitive SM lists, unfortunately.

What point level do you want to play at?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I should point out that there are many themed armies as well. Some include:

Salamanders: Vulkan He'Stan, go heavy on flamers, meltas, and some thunder hammers

Crimson Fists: Pedro Kantor, lots of Sternguard

Predator (Autocannon & Lascannon sponsons) 120pts
Predator (Autocannon & Lascannon sponsons) 120pts
Land Raider Crusader (w/extra armour & Multi-melta) 275pts

Here's an example 1750pt list for you, its not massively competitive but is reasonably balanced and should be fun to play with (the Vanguard and 2 HQ's go in the crusader for assaulty goodness.
Points for future list building, a librarian is generally accepted as one of the most versatile HQ's for C:SM (and very useful given the number of psychic powers around) and is a standard choice unless your taking a force multipler or have a specific role in mind (eg. Vulcan; twin-linked melta & flamers, Shrike; giving everything fleet, Captain on a bike; unlocking bikes as troops, etc).

Dakka preds (Autocannon & Heavy bolters) and Riflemen (dreadnoughts with 2 twin-linked autocannons) are both great for high number of shots and being relatively cheap.

Multi-melta speeders and Multi-melta attack bikes are both solid choices for mobile tank hunters.

Squishy infantry need metal boxes to hide in (razorbacks or rhinos), personally I prefer rhinos as I like to be able to hide the entire squad and you stick to the rhino's purpose (as an APC), rather than playing it like a tank (which is what tends to happen with Razorbacks).

Hope this helps.

Im looking for a balanced army that i easly switched between 500, 1000, and 1500 pts. so i can have a secondary army for me and my girl friend to play it needs to be able to take on any army so mainly she can get used to that army set up and it be the base for her to learn the game btw she loves lightning claw terminater with a chaplain just saying. is that a good combo
In all im looking for a good army list to start with to change it in to my own over time. just need a good base to start with i can see me tring to make an IG list becasue thats what i have been playing

Chaplain + LC Termies do deal a lot of damage, but usually it's too much and they leave themselves standing in the open staring at the corpses. Then follows the plasma.

Hi, im also SM player and i have only experience from friendly battles. I try different lists,so i can give you some ideas, and maybe you find some usefull things for yor army.

I think in 1500pts army Chapter master + honour guard is very expencive choise for HQ, this HQ eats 270pts, 1 HQ is good, take basic unnamed character, if you want play 2 or more bike squads take captain on bike - you can take bike squads as troops, or chaplain on bike. If you dont want use many bikes take librarian or Motf/he is very good on bike too/, IMHO Libbi and Motf are very good options for SM armies in 500-1500pts armies. They arent very expensive and they can boost your armies in different ways.

If you want use Dread take normal dread in Drop Pod or "Dakka" dread - 2x TLAC, very popular version

In 1500pts list 4 full tac squads are good, but 3 are enought, drop 4th squad and give instead transports to your 3 squads, rhinos or razorbacks, drop Pfs, give MM and meltagun to one of your squads.

If you want use your predators as Tank hunters so your weapon load is good, but I think AC/lascannons sponsons is better option and you save some points and still will have good fire power.

So, in final you can save some points from HQ, some from 4th tac squad, PFs etc, and 90pts if you choose to take AC/LC predators, for these points you can take maybe 2 bike squads, maybe one with Attack bike in, and if you put to them some melta weapons, MM to Attack bike, you can built good army with some fast units/bikes as armor hunters/3 tac squads in transports and good heavy support.

I post an example of army list, so maybe you find something usefull in it for your army:

You do not need so many tactical squads.
Transportation is key. So yes get rhinos or razorbacks.

Setting up tactical squads is down to personal taste. I would give them meltas not flamers. Then consider giving a combimeltas as well. Maybe have one squad with a flamer and give it a combiflamer, maybe even a powersword and meltabombs not powerfist.

I would only the preds the autcannon in general, though your list could do with the extra hard hitter.

Sternguard I like as 10 combimeltas in a drop pod -so you can take out two tanks, 6 man with two lascannons in a rhino to sit back and shoot or 6 men with 2 heavy flamers and 2 combimeltas to tear forward.

If you go for rhinos the dread will be too slow, though you could consider drop podding it.

My main army is mech ig just to get a better feal what is sm in terms of optimal range power and so to speak how aggresive to make them.
BTW i have a bike sq with 2 melta one combi melta a attack bike with MM and with it being 6 bikes plus an attack bike i think its like 210 pts so paby drop a tac sq and dread and add the bikes and some special weapons.

Here are my recommendations: Drop the upgrade on the Librarian. Ditch the Predators - or at least the crazy-expensive sponsons, and get transports for the Marines.

The best idea is to split the Marines into combat squads and give each squad a Razorback with Las/plas upgrade. I would probably work melta guns into at least some of the squads.

The odd rules for Marine Tactical squads make it necessary to use full squads; this is a huge competitive disadvantage compared with Space Wolves or Blood Angels, but it's the best you can do with Marines.

If you want the elites, give them a transport too. No unit without heavy weapons should be on foot. Veterans are pretty pricey for a 1500-point list, but they do have nice stuff.
