I have heard VDR (Vehicle Design Rules) mentioned a few times, but I don't know where to find the list of them.
Anyone know?

You can still probably find it somewhere on the internet if youh dig hard enough, and earlier versions of Army Builder used to include it, although I don't know if they still do. VDR was released during 3rd ed, though, so it's a bit out of date.

Its not that bad when you cobsider that even when the VDR were released they were over priced points wise. It's GW way of punishing you for playing how you want.

All I wanted was a Dark Eldar flyer with 11/11/10 and 8 Dark Lances with Coaxial Splintercannons. Never thought it would be 1250 points.

That website makes the vehicles cost more than they should.
The actual VDR rules are in White Dwarf #251 December Pages 72-88

They can also be found in Chapter Approved #1 & 3 I think. Look for the one with the chapter approved symbol on the cover and the one with the Defiler. Sometimes you can find them on ebay or amazon really cheap.

In the first version you could build a Land Raider with 200 bolters for under 500 points IIRC. So don't expect anyone today to accept VDR constructs in normal games.

You did something wrong. I did one with 11/11/10, transport 11, fast and 8 gatling long barelled dark lances with coaxial splinter cannons, and it came to 1091.

...I just tried making a Thunderhawk Gunship with autocannons instead of lascannons and got 654pts. Never mind that a proper Thunderhawk Gunship is 900pts.

VDR is cool for ideas. I have the WD with the VDR rules and when they came out I read them many times. However, being that they are 3rd edition and are not legal anyway, you're better off just making some house rules for your vehicle creations and asking for your oppnents permission.
I completely agree with the way VDR uped the points cost. It really was intended to keep powergamers from flooding the board with uber-tweaked vehicles.
