Subject: A Hobbyist's Dilemma. What Race Next?

As my DIY Chapter of SM,'The Red Raptors' are 99% complete, my thoughts and daydreaming are constantly turning to what race next? I got more and more adept with conversions as my SM force grew, so i 'm thinking a CSM army, cos this'll offer a gi-naggerus amount of opportunities to improve my converting skills, and as i'm primarily a hobbyist i'm not that worried about non compatible minis.
If I do choose a CSM Warband, is there a way back from the lures of the Ruinous Powers? Or forever tainted and stained will I be?

My DIY Chapter's ace in the hole are an Elite Scout Company, whose active units have aquired the tag of,'Belt Notchers'.
Comprising of newly promoted neophytes, sergeants, and vets from the Chapter's inception. Exploiting all of the advantages which arrise out of stealth-work, the'Belt Notchers' are,in their own right a terror weapon and the mere hint, whisper or rumour of their deployment has been enough to quell many an uprising. |

Chaos is quite resistable for now, until they get their new codex, which, rumor has it, is soon.
You should definitely try it. When it comes to conversions, as you stated, you have a ridiculous amount of opportunity to do whatever you want. Want some wings? That's an actual upgrade! Want secondary spidery-Doc. Oc limbs? Totally fine! Wanna make sneaky Lizard people and Dragon DPs? Welcome to Alpha Legion.
Bottom line, possibilities are endless, because Chaos is Crazy.

What race next. The age old question that hobbyists around the globe have asked for 30 odd years. I have an idea. Pick the army that is at complete ends to your army now. Orks are an option. Marines have well armoured, but slow vehicles. Orks have fast DTs with AV 10. Not even tanks. Marines can hit 2/3 times. Captains and Masters hit 5/6. Even Ghraz only hits 1/3 of the time. Marines are expensive. Ork boys at 6 pts per model? Need I say more? If you pick another MEQ army, then why bother at all? Jsut stay. Tau and necrons are due upgrades soon, so wait a while. DE and Eldar are good, but they are similar to space marines. Less tough, but faster. Tyranids, even though they are one of my favourite armies, are so nerfed, they are not even worth considering, unless you have my super-secret winning method.* coughHybridListcough* Guard are good. Many vehicles, many cheap troops, many, many victories lie ahead. Don't play SOBs, if you don't want to feel my wrath. I hate them. Simple reason is that the get there codex for £9, and get 2 issues of WD in the deadl!! That would normally cost any other army £30!!

I agree with almost everything here, except this. Eldar, maybe, but DE are way more along the lines of Orks than any other race, save for IG and 'Nids.
DE is something you should consider. Low saves, HEAVY power.

Are you actually trying to compare Okrs, IG and Nids?
That is like comparing Great White Sharks ( IG), Cod ( Orks), and plankton( Nids).

They all live in water (They all are very good horde armies). Comparisons made.

I personally am making a jump from SM to IG though I'm uncertain of the modelling oppurtunities there. Orks have plenty of oppurtunity to scratch build and convert, so my vote goes to orks. However, chaos certainly will put the horde of marine bits you no doubt have to good use should you need them.

I personally look for contrast when choosing a new army.
I started with CSM, so when I chose my second army I didnt want another army with power armor and rhinos.(basically any SM army) I went with Tau, which I saw as a completely different army as far as playstyle.
Starting next year I plan to start my 3rd army, and I'm about 75% sure Im going with Orks because I want a horde style army now that I already have a fully armored assault army (CSM) and a shooty army (Tau)
