UPDATE: Sat March 3 2012.
------------------------------------
When i started this up it began as a hobby pirate army for space marines but as i grew into the world of warhammer 40k it became ork orientated and eventually it turned into a direct desire to create an army worth fielding. In my eagerness to create a background i subconsciously jacked bits and pieces of lore that ive read over the years and had a pretty noobish mary sue army, good concepts too but mainly overplayed uber crap. Ugh, anyways im still working on the fluff but the army is coming along great!

The spoiler below is some of the journey that has lead up to where we are now so feel free to view it, it is loaded with pics and kinda wordy just so you know, or feel free to scroll to the most recent post but do take your time to enjoy the pics, and as always comments criticism and critiques are always welcomed!

Spoiler:

Now, the Krewe has been started and ill get to explaining them (and the history by which this wip started)
The first set of minis i actually bought was the SM Commander and a box of 5 Grey Knights. At the time the color scheme was black, red/maroonish and i had quality paints in the form of Games Workshop paints.

As you can see the paint scheme looks pretty good even with my meager skills.

Theres four of these guys left, three in the pic, the missing one not accounted for in my gallery is somewhere in my house. He kinda acted like a traveler so i call him Gulliver, If i find him ill call him that at least, for now, hes out there somewhere hopefully causing a bit o trouble.

Now the remaining member of the Grey Knights has my current color scheme on him:
UGH Crappy Walmart paint job on him.

See, I moved around a bit after getting these and other models so in taht time my painting was sordid and after a longer period, the paints are now goop. So not having much money i opted for Walmart paints and Dangit you can tell the quality difference. The paints all thick and flakey or chalky or something and even tho i just painted this guy last week you can tell where the handling of him and moving around of him is having its effect on the paint. Its ok as ive been wanting to, whats it called, strip them down and repaint em, sounds like another wip projekt when i can.

I Then bought the Thousand Sons Space Marines. Handsome looking models. I had my good paints at this time so the quality here is kinda good, if you dont include My skill set lol.
Heres the pharaoh boss guy, hes like 89% done.

I enjoyed posing these guys alot, got some killer looking models from them, heres a few of my favorites.

As you can see time has not been kind on them but they still look kick ass to me. One day ill get the proper paint to get them done proper.

After those guys i bought the Battle for/of Macragge. Yeah buddy! But to my dismay there was not much posing with the models I think theres one missing from the bunch, he must be off with Gulliver. Seeing as how the models are the same (well, two different poses mainly minus the burner and bazooka guys) it was a tad easier to assembly line paint them.

I just added the dark green line around the shoulder pad things, i used a shish-ke-bob stick to get the line done as i currently do not have a very fine brush and i dont have wash, just ink (besides my walmart paints). Yeah i had no clue what paints did what when i bought them, thought hey i could just do a scheme and be omw but as ive read various forums over the years it seems the level of quality that Table top was given has been upped a bit to the point where its like Show quality, and show quality has like wised risen a notch or two, but can you really blame it, some of you guys do indeed make works of art.

So its at this point i realllllly slowed down but i was still trying to maintain interest among moving to another state, finding a job and working my ass off.

I was able to find three terminators and three other random marines, just recently worked on the Termies, they all look like this pretty much
and the metal space marines are still in the original black and green colors
with the exception of this guy, i think hes a chaplain?

Today i just got my first batch of Orks from the AoBR box set (bought separately from the actual box set) so i will probably pose them up tomorrow. I do not like that they are limited in posing them but am very excited to actually have Orks for my Ork Freeboota army

I do plan on getting a bunch of orks, a gretchin squad, a fire warrior set, Kroot set and Legion of the damned minis(with a select few other Space marine minis) to compliment this army, i have high hopes for the legion of the damned (they will be painted in a bad moons clan kind of way to honor the kaptains badmoon clan upbringing - one of the only forethought ideas ive had about this whole army thing so far lol) Oh, i do not intend to use ALL of the minis from these sets, just a few to give it a more valid concept that a few of each race joined the Ork Freebooterz, this also will make it easier when i learn to make my Ork army. The left over minis will be used for conversion/diorama/wtf ever models.

Oh as to my color scheme: its purple and green(floressence green as well as dark green) pretty much with black where needed. I wanted a pearl essence effect but have since been told and seen in person that it doesnt have the same effect i want but it did change my purple a bit. I used a pearl essence medium i got back in 1995 (Liquitex paint) I wanted a dark Green
Skull like emblem painted on the right side of the Terminator Armors' shoulders, where possible im going to do faces/helmets green, and other assorted items will be colored as needed - im still not 100% how this scheme will work with more intricately detailed models. AS for on the orks, thats another toughy, dunno how its gonna work on them so ill be looking for ideas as well as listening for suggestions. - For the Orks purple will be the main color im guessing, otherwise ill have tons of minis to redo lol but im hoping itll work out, ill do purple checkers and the like. I didnt really get to put much thought into my orkiness before i went Ork. Lets hope this works out!

For now I am going to read a few blogs and articles to get ideas for both conversion as well as "how to do's". Until next time Dakkaites have fun lootin fightin n drinkin!

Hope to update asap!

- edited a few times cause im a dingbat like that

@ Depraved: Thanks, I love the scheme too, dont remember exactly why i added in the purple but yeah the green was just the right color for it it seems.

Ok so im finally getting around to posting work on my trukk that im making for my Ork Freebootaz. Its a big'un i suppose but fun. Its mainly foam core with monsta trukk tires and a Diesel cab. Its not orkified yet as im still building it up but i hope to do it ork justice.

I dont plan very well so most of this has been thrown together impulsively.
I started off with some random rectangle base "Carriage", added pen tubes to hold the tire axles which seem to work out good minus my off center placings lol.

When its all said and done the triukk should look like this. Had a ton of fun making that ram, didnt turn out how i wanted it to originally but still like the way it looks. Figuring if this trukk were legal fpr games it would be a fast attack medium armor troop transport and light or medium attack against infantry if thats an option lol. (i do plan to put lotsa guns on it). Crows nest or turret spot behind the cab.

One thing i wanted for sure was the back door to be a dop plank for those bakkup assualts lol. Now the sad thing was i wanted the orky skull to be apart of the drop plank but in my haste i both glued the ork to its foamcore base backwards as well as glued it to the base of the transport instead of the door, aye carumba. oh well. The door sticks a bit so i added a little wooden stem to pull it down with. The actual troop transport can hold around 5 per level and theres three levels

Im actully gluing parts of it together finally but im really at a loss for what to do with the crows nest turret thing. In this pic i have it on some wood stilts, should i leave it that way or just glue the base of the turret to the top of that funky outhouse looking thing behind the cab?

I plan on soon going to the local hobby town to get some much needed supplies like Cardstock/sheet styrene, Greenstuff, blue tack and possibly lots of that rounded cardstock i see in use. I have a strong feeling that im missing out on the possibilities with cardstock.

Oh My orks came in from the AoBR set and i seen some very interesting konversions for the deffkopta so i thought id try my hand at it.... It isnt glamorous but its all i can do with what i have at my disposal. Still working on ideas for this, it really does suck not planning this out lol, ahh overtime i hope to get in the habit of that lol. Almost made the deffkopta into a buggy looks like id have much to do with that front end though, who knows maybe ill buy some more AoBR orks and do another konversion to get the hang of things.

allrighty thats it for now, need to do some more orky stuff to this trukk and then start the painting.

One question to all, how do i make rivets with the cardstock?

Comments and critiques and tips are greatly appreciated as im an uba noob at this modeling/scratchbuilding stuff!!

Just a quickie. So i learned one lesson, well two actually but the main one is that i should probably paint the models before i put them together, trying to get the pilots face and cap were hard.

Primed two Deffkoptas, dingbat that i am glued the damn clear base to the deffkoptas (lesson two, do not do this lol) so i had to break em off to prime them. Oh well. Onwards!

This pic didnt turn out too well and my camera for the life of me didnt want to focus any better. I had wanted to get some opinions on the skin that i did, started off with a dark green and drybrushed a ligher green but not the neon green that i used for the space marines etc.

Decided to see how well the purple would turn out but i have no other purple to deepen or lighten the overall effect so for now this is what we got.

Purpled up the gloves, pants and the cap also, Chaos black on the boots and opposite the purple on the frame, bolt gun metal on the chain and what i hope is a metal wire as well as the sights.

Friday im going to the nearest hobby town and gonna grab me some mo betta paints, this Folk art just doesnt seem to apply itself well, or maybe its a user error, dunno.

Oh and yeah the pics show the purple a lil more... maroonish-pink, either way, what do you all think so far?
C&C always welcome, tips hints and tricks appreciated!

Ello dere! Bak for more Dakka dakka WIP goodness!

Went to the nearest HobbyTown and spent a buncha money, got me some Paints (the warhammer paint set with night goblins), some Green stuff, a detail brush, some sheet styrene and lastly some rods for various hopefully cool konversions. In all that i STILL forgot to get me some purple so im still using my Folk art purple which isnt so bad.

Anyways ive seen wonderful uses for green stuff and ive wanted to try it out, soo seeing as how im going all Freeboota, i tried my hand at making a pirate hat...

I had a terrible first time with it, the back end of the hat kept wanting to get in my fingers way so it looks spektakularly 'orrible but meh its orky!

Alright! Tried out some of those paints on my first Freeboota and aside from my highlight on the skin i like how it turned out, dunno how much but theres some devlan mud up on this guy, actually looks kinda cool with it, does pick up some of that detail. Yes, theres mold lines, i dont have any xacto blades small enough to get the mold lines so until i do, mold line horror here.

You can see the disaster area back there. Guess i had the GS too wet and it was flimsy? Kinda gives it that worn look.

That purple actually looks good in person, gives it a certain look that is cool beans, plus it seems to show off some of the detail better than i thought it would.

Heres my Crows nest-turret box done up with checkers and zig zag triangle colors, i know its standard orky colors are black n white but Dis iz Freebootaz, we doez it dif'rent oi! We'z be Reprezentin!

My first night goblin done up using the tutorial that comes with the Warhammer paint set. Lovely if i do say so myself. Although that moon icon was the hardest to do for me.

Side by side. By the way, that lil circle thing on the pirate hat is eventually going to be a skull, the GS was so flimsy last night that i coudlnt work with it decently so ill find a way to fix it.

I got one of the deffkoptaz started on the paint scheme and i had an idea for them, i happen to have some flourescent/glow in the dark/nightlight paints that im gonna color over with after im done, dunno how well itll work but i do know they wont hinder the paint scheme.
Oi, Wez gone be some bright targets eh?

@Grass4hopper
Never thought about it as a Joker style, but that is indeed a cool idea to do!

Oy then, diss'eer iz wots up!

Finished the first ork pirate minus basing. Took Iyanden Darksun yellow and attempted a drybrush over the belt straps, im not so good at drybrush, its cause i dont have the right brushes for the different things i need to do, i just got some random brushes a fine detail brush and the one that came with the paints which is a good brush but it has a few strands that stand apart. I just barely drybrushed highlights onto the face, wanting the ugly ass teeth to stand out the most.

Ahh yeah did a paint fix on my lil skully on the hat although i realize I need to work on my black, its just too flat.

Remember these guys?

Check'em out now

The glue musta dissolved

Thats some tuff ass Testors metallic red.

crappy angle but you can see the detail in his right boot again

I used some old as hell DG (dollar general) oven cleaner, it was so craptastic and oooold that barely anything came out and it was foamy. Put 'em all in a soda can, id say they covered them 3/4 so i occasionally shook the can around, let em sit out overnight and the stuff was gunky, washed the models and grabbed a tooth brush and thats what they came out as! Hella nice, now i did have a drafting compass and used the point on it to work out the itty bitty spots - in fact i had let them sit on my work bench for a few hours before i went after the crevices and the stuff just flaked off!

Anyone know much on these Grey Knight models? Well, i should really just ask: Are these models Oop now? They have some of the wickedest looking armor and the whole left arm guns are billy bad ass.

Im perplexed though, should i save em for a while and konvert 'em (i envision an orky klaw on the right side) or just paint em up in current color scheme?
Im not gonna attempt to cut into them although i may grind down those books on their left shoulders.

Ive got a Waaagh banner in the works, should be cool, no progress on the monsta transport trukk, well thats a lie, the wife, and then my youngest both dropped it, the porta potty lookin thing broke off which is all good though as i didnt like the way it was looking.

Anywho thats all for now!

"Ello dere, we's been busy yeh see but wes got us some more of da krewe almost ready for some krumpin, some drinkin, some lootin and some more krumpin!

Been experimenting with the greenstuff but i havent really read up much but i still got three more pirate hats done.

A few days later i received my Orc Pirate bits which makes me wish i woulda waited to make my own GS pirate hats but its all good for now.

Painted two Nobz and 4 other boyz aside from the boyz with the pirate hats on 'em.

Ive become more patient with my paints and i think im beginning to improve on them. Still want better paints though. Oh!, the wife went out and bought me a set of paint brushes of various types that i feel have contributed also and its even got her into painting a mini, one of the nightlord goblin guys. Shes been contributing to my growing collection of this and thats, shes Orki at heart i just know it.

Oy dere, youze ramblin, git to krrrumpin!

Right then, well not the krumpin but ill show some pics:

Nightlords krewe

Da Other Boyz

Nobz

And last but not least
Freeboota XIII

Lesson learned so far: Dont over do the Wash!

Oh one last pic:

OY!

Iz youz out dere Dakka-ites? Wez back forra few n wez gotz somefingz forya

Just a quick update for any of you out there viewing.
I just recently completed the ork boyz Krewe (minus 4 im working on for another idea) and most are done to my satisfaction although ive found areas i need to work on to better myself. Bases are still not done but im not stressing it, they are all on blacktop pavement for all i care

As you can see from above I made a WAAAGH!!! Watch tower, it was hella fun, my boyz and i did it as a projekt, theyve goth theirs in the works too.
I LOVE the way the waaagh!!! tower came out but its... Too clean for an ork made objekt in my opinion but at least the lettering looks credible!

Man this konverting and scratch building is hella fun, shoulda got more into this hobby when i was younger, so far in all this absence ive:
Made two killa kans (which are probably not to scale), ones still being figured out while the other one is partially primed
Almost finished the konverted deffkopta/bike, its gonna be a (bright?)yelllow and red bike, more red than yellow but currently has no weapons whatsoever.
Built that WAAAGH!!! Tower and OH YEAH got a pirate ship in the works, its too boxy but for a 99% Foamcore constructed ship its not too bad.

My Camera has run outta battery power so theres no more pics till i can get some and theres no way im gonna use my cellfone or webcam to take pics, theyd make my models look naaasty.

Question: Low Luster/High Luster (liquitex brand) Varnish is ok to finalize my models with right I hope so as ive already done it and they dont look bad, in fact they were kinda dull chalky lookin till i varnished em now they look good.

Comments, Critiques and anything else appreciated!

We'z still out here, gettin some stuff done, planning some other stuff. Hope to have something to present within a month or so, but its cool not like theres much going on here.

I do plan to skratch everything fluff ive mentioned and start over using only a few of the original plans, still an ork freebooter army and still using the color scheme but am focusing on real game play and not just model/painting. Im still going to get models to fit my non gaming freebooter army so itll still be fun to mess with.

Camera is still dead so no pics of anything but ive got most of my starter army done, warboss is almost finished, 29 boys are done, one of em based lol, Also got a Trukk im working on. Been working with basing so newer models will have proper bases to em, older ones will get some simple flocking done when i can get the stuff.

As usual, if theres any hints tips tricks critiques, hell ill even go for a tad rudeness just to get some comments in here, post em!

Green iz Best!

WAAAGH!!!

Progress has been made!

First the info then the pics, yes?

So i came into a bit of orks, a current codex (which is awol at a most seriously badt time) and some toolz to get my army all sortsa propa. In fact i may have a bigger army than i really intended to but its hella fun working on. Its in various stages as i try to get things sorted, im a bit unorganized so it makes it interesting. Along the way though ive had some fun at kustomizing da krewe a bit and i must say i can see my army expanding greatly over the years heh heh heh.

All were new on sprue when i got em so they are in their basic set ups, no really serious addons since i cant find the codex to make sure i give em legal items.

2 warbosses, both AOBR, the main warboss is wip

Kustom big mek w KFF and gun

2 Mega nobz: D'oh i need one more! well, with one of em i was gonna make a mega armor warboss but they are not as big as i thought and i wasnt gonna shell out for a ghazkull thraka to modify.

14 Nobz, 9 with powerklaws. 10 of em are AOBR, some minor kustom work.

da Krewe
36 slugga/choppa AOBR
39 Shoota boyz
7 big shootaz, 4 AOBR
4 random boyz made from spare parts, to me they are gonna be special characters, like up n commer boyz, future nobz to watch out for lol.

1 battlewagon

3 Jakkers (trukks)

9 Ridaz (bikers)(3 are being konverted from AOBR deffkoptaz)

2 deffkoptaz

1 skratchbuilt killa kan, dunno if its even legal at all but was fun making.

and 35 kromlech/maxmini pirate/commander headz

Alllllllllllll righty then onto the pics!

First up da Kaptain!

So far i kut off the backpack pole and cut the arm as to angle it more forward and gave him a peg leg. Hes got one of them metal mouth faces but its in the bit box still. Gun arm isnt done just mocked up, i want to do some kinda to the side positioning with it but sure where i wanna cut to make it work.

next is our Big Mek

konverted from a nob with a kff and shoota, dunno if it qualifies as a regular gun or anything special but theres tons of various parts added to it lol. I converted taht spanner thing from an axe, i had nothing around to make it look cooler but meh whatever hes still puttin in work.

His backpak is bits from a terminator backpack, some itty bitty wire coils i had, part of a deffopta and some other bits i had laying around - im not totally done but im not finding anything around to make it look more orky/technosteampunkish

Da MegaNobz!

Would you believe i lost the original metal skull that came with one of em? It sucks but i had tons of topknots with skulls and spiked skulls that i managed it

Another funky kustom shoota and my first kustom klaw! I think this was a random left over aobr nob and man i really wanted another pklawed nob !

My Avatar inside warhammer 40k:

Nob Freeboota XIII got an upgrade in some unrecorded journey, he now has a powerklawed hand that he ripped off an enemy/innocent bystander(who can really say?) and transplanted unto himself to make up for the lack of his arm thanks to a tyranid somethin or other being a tad overzealous. (this will give me street cred when its time to explain why the paint doesnt match lol)

Heres most of Da Krewe with pirate/commando heads

the kommando headz work well for this theme and the pirate hats are gonna be good to study so i can greenstuff some more on other headz

The battlewagon

The purple is actually really dark but it shows up so bright on here. Still not sure on whether to add the carriage and big guns or leaving it open cabbed in the back, ideas?

Silly nob thinks this is a taxi. Working on the chipped paint around edges, not good at it but this shot makes it look kinda good.

Jakker 1

Jakker 2

Jakker 3 Hi-jakker

Im thinking: Red 'uns go Fasta!? that gun uptop is actually a kustom twin linked shoota or i guess a big shoota, which ever works.

Da Ridaz

Did any of you out there have any trouble lining up the handlebars to the arms? If it wast for green stuff thered be grandcanyon esque gaps between the hands and the handlebars lol.

Welp thanks for taking time to look. please feel free to leave any comments critiques criticism etc as they are all appreciated!

Dont mind him, hes just excited to get his picture taken.

I'm not really sure about the neon theme but pirates are badass. I'm also making flashgitz count as nobz for my speedfreaks. I've taken a lot of inspiration from empire models.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

When my original idea was paint/modeling hobby orientated and more space marine-y the black and neon green was wicked, but as i changed it to ork the green was out of place so i use it only for small things like skulls on the guns or their belts. now the color scheme for the ork army is primarily purple/black but to add further comedy to the things i do, when i take photos of the purple it comes out blue-ish! lol.

As for that link, you are correct i do love it, in fact thats the place i got the idea to greenstuff the pirate hats when i got my first orks its the great/long coat thing thats gonna get me.

Im also in the process (green stuffs setting as i type) of doing the fold over on the boots (sad to say i dont know what thats called).

Made in fi

I've also been working on those folds over boots but it is proving to be rather difficult as ork boots are short (ralative to their pose and size) and thick (my folds don't look convincing unpainted).

I'd love to see how you are doing folds.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

Ello Dere!
Wez bakk forra small update!

Attempted to do some fold overs and failed miserably. I did get some kinda cool look out of them so plus for that,

I looked in my favorites folder and i noticed this Wonderful page of Pirate orcs, dunno if the guy is on this forum or not but heres a link if its ok: http://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/t475-warbosskurgan-s-orc-pirates this guy has done some great stuff, anyways it was by looking at his that i think i figured out the way to do some decent fold overs. Until i work the GS better this is what we have:

The trick it seems is that i was making big ass strips at first and i ended up trying a thinly rolled out snake of gs, looped it around his leg and then using my tools slowly pushed it in, dunno if thats what he did but thats what i came up with lol.

Im doing good at bandannas though!

First attempt at a pirate coat front

and back

and a group shot!

Thinking on the name Freebootaz Kollektive as a name for the krewe, what do you all think?

As usual comments criticism critiquing or (most) anything else beginning with a C appreciated!
