a thai grognard (well I call him that way) says that even if the settings of an IG Inf. Squad having 1 Heavy weapons and 1 Special weapons (Plasma OR GL, which have EXACTLY the same range as Lasguns) is legal (as of 13th Crusade-era IG Codex, and hopefully the new ones). it's not popular because he claimed that even if the two have an immense firepower at 24" (I AIN'T put melta NOR flamethrowers into line squad. ) it is VERY ineffective because (he claimed that) Special Weapons (regardless of its range) requires that an operator to move while it is known that HW works only if it standstill (or you need a crew to set up a firing position for one turn should you move the team or squads having this weapon ).

he claimed that the squad also needs to be dedicated to choose whether to equip heavy weapons OR special weapons, using 'points preciousness' as a reasons

Should I trust him? is his reasoning logic?

too bad he's writing the whole things in Thais.

I think you are asking this question:

Do Special weapons need the model to move in order to fire them or can they stand still and fire them?

Nothing in the game requires you to move to be able to fire your weapon.

All weapons, as long as they have range and LoS can fire whilst stationary.

I suggest you read the rulebook. Heavy weapons require that the unit not have moved that turn to fire it, but there's nothing about having to set up the weapon for a turn after moving. Plasma guns are Rapid Fire, which means the 24" range is only possible if you in fact do not move. Grenade Launchers are Assault Weapons, so it is completely irrelevant for them whether you move or not.

It's terrible logic.

That said, it really depends on how you want to run your list. There's plenty of ways to set up successful platoons.

yep I'm tryin' to ask that but that grognard claimed that this setting is not popular, i.e.

X> Infantry Platoon
X0> PCS
X1> Infantry Squad
Grenade Launcher
X2> Infantry Squad
Heavy Bolter

he claimed that this setting is more popular. I'm not sure if he's speaking truth or lie, or does he try to avoid the 'powergaming'? by reducing an extra firepower? (or is it 'gaming ethics'. be fair, no fool, and not to do an unneccessary overkill)

You can put one special weapon and one heavy weapon in an infantry squad.

You don't have to put both however, synergy is a good thing. What usage is a flamer on a unit with a lascannon that will sit in the back?

Commonly, most guard players put their heavy weapons in a heavy weapons team, since they don't want to waste shots of lasguns against the wrong types of targets.

What he is doing is putting a heavy bolter in one squad, and a grenade launcher in another. Odd, but there is nothing wrong with it. The most popular setting is infantry squads with melta guns and nothing else.

It's not powergaming to add special weapons to your units, unless your building a list to defeat a specific army, such as plasma guns only vs grey knights.

This is a tactics question, not a rules question, and should be moved to the tactics forum.

The OP is asking whether it is worthwhile to put both a Special and Heavy weapon in an IG platoon. His acquaintance is claiming that he should pick one or the other, as the Heavy weapons require the platoon to stand still while the Special weapons require the platoon to move closer to the enemy in order to be within range, and that taking both costs too many points.

The truth is that there is no hard and fast rule. Many Heavies and Specials have good synergy with each other. Autocannons and Grenade Launchers work fine together, and Sniper Rifles are basically "heavy" weapons that fit on a single trooper, and have no problems keeping up with the range of Autocannons or Lascannons.

Autocannon+Grenade Launcher is a favorite among many Guard commanders.

It should, yes. Hitting the mod alert button is the best way to make that happen, otherwise it just sits here until one of us happens to stumble across it.
