There may already be a posted topic on this and if so please send me the link but I was just curious...

For special characters, which would you say are the better ones for Orcs & Goblins? I would think Grimgor is a great one to take - awesome armor save as well as a an included ward save, and having access to better Black Orcs, but are there others?

Gorbad seems another viable option - ability to take multiple Big 'Uns in a single army? Yes please!

What about Azhag? I love the model, and he seems to have some useful abilities, but is he effective points-wise?

Thanks for the help!

Azhag and Gorbad are terrible. Azhag is the worst of the 3. I love Grimgor. He's killed lots. The benefit to Black Orcs isn't amazing though.

How is Gorbad terrible? Multiple big uns is great, LD 10 General and BSB out to 18" is great, he is decent in melee too.
And if you happens to roll a 1 for animosity, he helps too.

I really don't see why people say why Gorbad is terrible, Yeah if you stick him in a small unit of Boar boyz then he is going to run away and die at the same time cos he's the BsB, but if you stick him in a unit of 14 5 wide 3 deep and don't charge him into anything stupid then he'll be ok.

Besides, he does a lot by just being there, dont commit him recklessly.

He really needs a ward though. Anything, even a 6+. I saw him, and a unit of 12 big un boar boyz get slaughter by some stormvermin and queek, in a challenge.

Gorbad ASF, ignores armor and does D3 wounds with each of his 4 attacks. He must have wiffed, he should have slaughtered Queek.

A Ld9 general and BSB runs you wound ~200 points.
Gorbad does that, gives the 18" range, gets you big uns (but not multiple savages), and helps with the animosity, for ~175 more.
If you just use him for leadership and Big Uns, I'd say he's worth it.

He shouldnt have slaughter queek. He struck after queek, and queek ignored armour saves, he was killed before he did a thing.

If Gorbad has ASF, there is no way that anything will strike before he does. If both sides have ASF, you strike at the same time, you do not go to Initiative.

Im pretty sure gorbad doesnt have ASF...

EDIT:

Skarsnik is a bemusing prospect. He has a quite powerful shooty bound item but no armour or ward save to speak of and thus will be a little bit dead if he can't avoid combat.

A regular opponent has been using glitta da hunter pretty often with a lot of success. Usually with a lvl 2 with sneaky stabbing spell casting on the unit.

Has anyone tried Snagla? I'm not sure how effective he'd be.

I like Snagla. He's pretty fun. It also freaks out opponents to have 20 Spider Riders with Devastating Charge appear behind their lines.

What about Grom the Paunch? Has anyone seen/played him effectively in a game?

I always found Grimgor great even if the new rulebook (8th) saw him getting a little weakened. Gorbad is always a good choice in my opinion. I believe in Skarsnik though. Grom I haven't played, but a friend used him against High Elves, and well his opponent just picked Eltharion and that was it. Gitilla and Snagla, I haven't tried yet.

The big gripe I have with Gorbad is that he will die fast. He only has a 3+ armor save, and like 4 S5 attacks. Grimgor strikes in at 5 S8 attacks, and a 1+ armor save. Grimgor swings and probably kills Gorbad. Gorbad maybe gets to Grimgor.

Gorbad isnt as good in combat as Grimgor, but he provides good army wide buffs.

To me if I'm going to pay for an expensive character, he better be able to hold his own in combat. Shamans and BSB's are the exception. The benefit Gorbad gives isn't great to me. I like having vast numbers of boyz that overwhelm the enemy.
