THQ AND CRYTEK COLLABORATE TO DEVELOP NEXT HOMEFRONT TITLE

Legendary FPS Developer Set To Take THQ’s Successful Original IP
To New Heights

AGOURA HILLS, Calif., September 20, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) – THQ Inc., (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced that the next title in its Homefront® franchise will be developed by multi-award winning FPS veterans Crytek.

“Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry’s best talent,” said Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games, THQ.

“Homefront’s unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over. With Crytek’s industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we’re supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand.”

“We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ,” said Cevat Yerli, Founder, CEO and President of Crytek. “We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title, creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game. It’s really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way.”

The first Homefront title was released in March 2011, and proved to be a commercial success for THQ. The yet to be named sequel is scheduled for release in THQ’s fiscal year 2014 on console and PC platforms.

I'm not sure what to think about this.

The first game at least had better multiplayer gameplay than CoD, MoH, or BF. The real problem its multiplayer had was its server code, which really needed patching and I'm not sure how much they've fixed it yet.

That's funny.

So basically we can expect a fairly gneric shooter with some spiffy but poorly implemented game play features ruined by horrible AI?

Look on the bright side. At least it will look LOVELY!

Wait, are you talking about BF3 or Homefront 2?

Homefront 2 (sort of). Come on Melissia. You can recognize mocking of Crytek when you see it

I hate Crytek. So much potential wasted in their pursuit of graphics so high that only inanely idiotic people really care about it. Meanwhile their games suffer from poor implementation and crappy bot AI. Far Cry was okay, but everything since baring Crysis 2 has just been an adventure in pushing the graphics bar higher Crysis 2 was just boring.

EDIT: Their games are basically just demos for the Cry engines. Like Unreal Tournament, except the Unreal Tournament games are usually pretty good... if we choose to accept Unreal 2k4 was the last one Epic made

Speaking of THQ, Red Faction is pretty good fun. Also, is it just me or does THQ have something for games where you play as some sort of rebel.

And I was mocking BF3. At any rate, I see what you mean. That's actually kinda why I said this was a bit of an odd choice for me.

Although I enjoyed what they were trying to do with the campaign, it came nowhere close to what was promised. It was short, often glossing over what could've been some great campaign material. And then it left on a cliffhanger. The whole SP experience was over the course of a handful of levels with individual acts. The environments were inspired, sure. But they didn't feel unique. After you've run around one suburb shooting Koreans, you've done so through all of them. No need to have 5 more suburb segments. The MP felt like nothing more than a mixture of BF2 and CoD to a tee.

Although I'm willing to buy HF2, I'm going to wait for Metacritic to run some reviews. And the folks blaming THQ for the underwhelming final product of HF need to remember that they only published the game. Kaos studios are the ones that jus couldn't make a quality product. And they've since gone under. Coincidence?

Although one should keep in mind that they were situated in New York, so they had to do EXTREMELY well to not go under because of the expense of running a company there.

That was kind of what I was getting at...

If the game they made was actually worth it's pricetag, then they'd probably still be around. You put out crappy product and your publisher gets choked after seeing mediocre to terrible reviews, so they cut you out. Doesn't matter where your offices are, if you lose money on your product but still have to pay a percentage of all sales to your publisher, then of course your company will go under.

If they would've been willing to put the same level of effort into the game as they put into the advertising for it, then they'd probably be around still. The franchise has a lot of potential to really go anywhere it wants to. But it won't last if they stick to Kaos' level of quality (Or lack thereof).

I don't know if they lost money on it (I don't think so, as it did sell more than enough copies to pass the break-even point according to the press reports), but THQ did consider it a successful game.

Successful game? Or successful advertising?

I think the latter is more likely. Seems that after reviews went out, sales dropped off pretty quickly.

It was on a Steam sale not even three months after release. That's a bad sign, usually.

Not... really? Lots of games get that treatment. Steam is just that kind of place. It's easier to justify Steam going on sale because production values to sell on Steam are cheaper.

*Shrug* If you say so. But I've noticed that games that sell quite well tend to take longer to go on sale. Not to say there's anything wrong with that - If you've got product still selling at full price months after the fact, more power to you. Steam, like anyone else, tends to hold out on discounting price until sales start to drop off slightly, but noticeably. They can offer larger discounts sooner than others because, you're right, Cost from the supplier is lower for them than for a physical distributor. But they still follow the same general rule of thumb that every retail outlet, for any product, follows.

HF had an interesting idea for their world, was just poorly implemented in my opinion. The MP was ok, I enjoyed how you "bought" vehicles, but for some reason I just couldn't stick with it. I felt the balance was pretty decent, though alot of people cried foul a the thermal scopes.

I enjoyed the BF franchise more, but due to a severe hatred of EA won't be getting BF3 I think. Wasn't that impressed by the beta, and after playing games like RO2 and AARMA 2, it's they all feel a little arcade like.

But OT, I'd be willing to give HF2 a shot, would like to see the story line fleshed out a little bit more honestly.

Exactly what I'm saying. The background could really make for a good franchise. It just needs to be utilized better.
