Out of the listed Sarge/Upgrade like characters, which of them do you think does the most damage/squad boosting abilities? Are they all very necessary to the squad? Or are they really not a big help?

EDIT: Also, Why are they the best?

The Aspiring Champion is as strong as an SM sarge, but he can also take a lot of nice gear and a Mark of Chaos.

Commissar, gives Ld Re-rolls and Stubborn which massively boosts the effectiveness of a blob, has an awesome statline and decent gear.

Exarch. I was thinking mostly about Eldar DA here. Amazing abilities and good range of equipment.

The commissar was second on my list

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

I don't think the Commissar counts as a leader. He's more of an upgrade to a squad which already contains a leader.

Ill give a vote for DA Exarch, by taking him with bladestorm you double the squads damage output.

I'll put my money down on the Space Marine. He gets lots of cheap upgrade options that enable him to either support the role of the squad he's in, or provide a safety net in case the squad is forced to function in another role. I like to roll with Power Fists and Combi-Meltas, but the Space Marine sergeant is like a pizza, you can go with whatever toppings floats your boat.

My vote goes to the Nob, with Exarchs being a close second.

Nobz bring a free wound (which can be used to absorb wounds that would otherwise kill a boy in the squad), a powerklaw hidden in a unit that is often 10+ strong (making it difficult to force wounds onto the klaw-bearer), and the ability to take a variety of useful wargear designed to keep da boyz fightin' and not runnin'.

Exarchs are pretty awesome too. They have a lot of the same benefits as a Nob (unit-wide offensive and defensive options, potentially a better armour save, etc), but their squads max out at 10, meaning that unless the squad is maxed out, it's much easier to force wounds onto an Exarch than a Nob.

Commissars, too, are up their in terms of effectiveness, but I didn't really consider them because they're not "sarges" in the traditional sense. They're more like a special type of HQ unit dispersed among the troops squads. Almost as good as a Nob though (stubborn, hidden powerfists).

I think that's been changed. They are now a squad upgrade with 1W (I think).
They are still really effective.

Nobz. Definitely Nobz. They give that added 'punch' (no pun intended) to a Boyz mob, and it what ultimately protects them from walker combat. He also keeps the boyz in line

I voted for the Nob, because of the hidden PK, and the bosspole.

However, runner up was the space marine sarge, simply because he is free. You always get him, so his benefits are built in.

Also, I don't think the broodlord should be in there. While technically he fits the category, he is extremely expensive, and isn't he an HQ choice as well? Or am I thinking of warrior primes?

The broodlord used to be an HQ choice, now it is an upgrade character to any squad, still with HQ stats.

For versatility, SM Sarge.

I don't think Commissars would really count.

Aspiring Champion. Not only can he be outfitted with whatever the squad's mark is. But because he also has the ability to be channeled into a Greater Demon.

I say broodlord, it allows for good wound allocation for str 8 weapons and it has some nasty psychic powers, especially hypnotic gaze.

Broodlord. Those things can tear through power armour like a knife through butter, have psycic powers to boot, and cost next to nothing (well.. 65 points.. but still). Besides, it leads a Brood of Genestealers, and those things are lethal.

The Nob, this isn't even close in terms of how much better he makes a Boyz squad.
