After the loss of the original Astral Knights Chapter against the resurgence of the Necrons, a select few members of the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Inquisition recovered the gene seed from the wreckage of the World Engine. The extraction is a lengthy tale in itself, but the resulting Founding was celebrated by the hard working, Emperor fearing citizens of Azrinae. The Reborn Chapter, still in it's infancy, did not go untested.

Orks fell from the sky in Roks, eliminating the small Guard unit that was intended to protect the teams of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Recorded here is the first blooding of the Astral Azrinae Chapter.

Armies-

AA-
Captain /w Power Weapon
10 Tac Squad - Chainsword/Bolt Pistol, ML/Flamer in Rhino
10 Tac Squad - Combi-Melta/Power Weapon, LC/Plasmagun in Rhino
Dreadnaught - Multi-Melta, DCCW
5 Terminators - 3x TH/SH, 2x Lightning Claws
5 Assault Squad - Melta Bomb, Flamer, Plasma Pistol

Orks-
Warboss - Big Shoota, Power Claw
10 Nobs - 5x PK in Trukk
30 Boyz - Choppas, 2x Rokkit Launcha, 1 Big Shoota
20 Boyz - Shootas, 2x Big Shoota
10 Gretchin
4 Loota and Mekboy
3 Deffkoptas
3 Ork Bikers

Deployment -

AA goes first, the orks aiming to wipe out the Chapter before they gain their full strength, the battle coming to a point in the valley of ruins outside the Imperial Guard base.

Captain Na'tonis directs his Tac Squads to run up the west side of the valley, to either loop around behind the enemy, or take advantage of the ideal firing lines the ruins will provide them. The Assault Squad takes a point on the hill to the south, and Captain Na'tonis accompanies Battle Brother Aronel in the Dreadnought. The Space Marines anxiously await the Terminators to teleport onto the field, and the inevitable charge from the orks in the northeast.

The orks, showing some understanding of tactics, only fielded their fast attack and the shoota boys with gretching cannon fodder, holding the Trukk with the warboss and nobs and the choppa boys back to respond to the battle. The orks moved faster than anticipated, and stole the initiative from the Azrinaens.

Orks Turn 1 -

The ork boys swarm up the center of the table, towards the opening in the stone ridge, the Runeherder whipping the grots into place. The bike and deffkoptas speed across the battlefield, eager to take some shots at the transports full of marines. With nothing to fire at and being far too far away to assault, the Marines get to make their move.

AA Turn 1 -

Seeing the ork rocket launchers and bikes screaming towards their inital goal, the Captain makes the call to draw back both Rhinos, drop off the Tac Squads, and try and plug up the battlefield. If successful, they would only have two approaches to the Marines and the city behind them, as opposed to four. The Assault Squad rockets up the hill, chainswords itching to get a piece of the loota boys.

Ork Turn 2 -

The Choppa Boys show up, clearly attempting to outflank the marine position behind the ruins. The Deffkoptas approach the Rhinos, aiming to explode the eastmost, but even the twin-linked shots fail to penetrate the armor. The bikes wheel around, taking advantage of cover, ready to support the Deffkoptas if the Rhinos get out of the way. Shootas and gretchin move up, and the Lootas take pot shots at the assault squad, blasts ringing off their power armour.

AA Turn 2 -

The Rhinos, having delivering their squads to the edge of what they hope will become the killbox, rush off to plug their respective holes. The first rhino moves as fast as it can, screeching to a halt between the canyon wall and the walls of the ruin, while the other takes a more cautious approach, firing both storm bolters at the Deffkoptas, aslong with the two tac squads. The combined firepower wipes out the flying hunks of junk and allows the dread to open up more fire on the cannon fodder grots, killing a few, though the Runderherder keeps them in line.

The Assault Squad, dodges behind a pillar to block line of sight from the lootas, and the orks continue their swarm.

Ork Turn 3 -

Looks like the Marines may have a bit of a fight coming up, as the Trukk loaded with Nobs and the Warboss comes onto the field, bouncing like it's going to charge right through the center lines of the Azrinaen force.

The Rhinos in front of the boy squads each take a hit, and the tank plugging the hole near the ruin is immobilized, transmission hit. The crew immediately starts to try and get her back up and running again.

The bike unleash a hail of fire on the heavy lascannon squad, and two battle brothers give their life for the Emperor.

AA Turn 3 -

Once again, the orks were stupid enough to walk into the killbox. Both tactical squads open fire, killing two bikers and wounding the other. The other rhino pulls up to block the underpass, and clears the line of sight for the dread to open fire and wipe him from the surface of the planet in a hail of storm bolter fire. As the rhino pulls in, the crew realizes they have one shot at the Trukk full of boys with the HK missile. The missile streaks out, exploding the Big Shoota and the ork manning it.

The western rhino takes shots at the choppa boys, and fails to get the engine working again, while the assault squad in the east is just too far away to take a shot at the Loota boys.

Ork Turn 4 -

The lootas, thanking their luck at not having to dodge bolter fire, flamer and plasma bolts, open up on the assualt squad. A firestorm erupts from there weapons, and an assault marine's jump pack explodes, taking him painfully down. The boyz squads again take shots at the rhinos, trying to force their way through, and the western tank takes another immobilizing hit.

The warboss calls for a Waaauugh! and leaps out of the trukk to charge into the Tactical Squad, guns blazing. Only two marines survive the assault, killing two nobs. The sergeant and his companion Marine stand their ground, hoping to tie the orks up long enough for the Terminators to show their grim faces.

AA Turn 4 -

The shooting fest between the Rhinos and the Boys continue, more gretchin die. Damn Runeherder keeping them around. The Heavy Tac Squad opens fire on the trukk and makes it explode, but not before it careens into the wall of the ruin in a ball of flame.

The assault marines get to live up to their name, as they fly in, pistols firing. Their chainswords and power fist tear four orks limb from limb without taking a single wound. THe remaining ork, fighting on, doesn't seem to notice the death of his buddies.

And our glorious Captain Na'Tonis and Battle Brother Aronel counter charge into the lines with the Warboss and Nobz. A tough fight ensues, the warboss coming away bloodied but still fighting, and only one nob losing his head. The remaining Tactical Squad doesn't survive the carnage, but the Terminators deepstrike on the Nobs flank.

Ork Turn 5 -

The remaining Loota Boy goes down under a flurry of blows from the Assault squad as the boys doggedly try and push their way through Rhino tanks with rokkit launchas.

The Nobs continue the fight, scoring a wound on the Captain as he decapitates the Warboss and Brother Aronel kills another nob. The nobs hold their ground, but he knows the fight will end soon with the Terminators joining the fray.

AA Turn 5 -

The Terminators move closer to the nobs to allow the Tactical squad to squeeze by as they run for more of a fight. The Terminators walk into the fight, and the combined might of the honorable Captain, the Dreadnought, and Their Thunder Hammers kill off 4 more nobs and send them running.

With the head of the ork army dead on the field and the staggering losses of everything that walked into the killbox, the fight ends with the orks going bak to their Rok to lick their wounds.

Don't know. Maybe with the focus on the push through the middle with the nobz, the warboss lost sight of the fact that he can hit the rear armor in an assault. *shrugs*

Looks like a fair and fun game although quite a lot of weaknesses from the orks imo. SM has some odd bits here and htere as well. Of course cant be perfect I suppose

Only illegality I see is that the ork warboss has a big shoota, he cant take one iirc. Not too major though

Yeah, I probably quoted the big shoota incorrectly, was just trying to put down the list from memory.

Out of curiosity, what odd bits would you improve on the SM Army?

Techmarine - whats it for?
Vanguard Veterans - a jump pack costs 30 pts, one with jump pack, power weapon costs 45.. which is more then a terminator, which is better in every way, literraly
Assault Marines - they cannot beat a unit of boyz in assault, so their name is deceiving, as they are not made for assault. I would give them assault blades - S5, and +2 A on the charge, and up their points by 3
Scouts - are fairly awful, as they are bad at assault AND shooting
Land Speeder Storm - is utterly rubbish, as it can only trasnport scouts, (who are awful , and is open topped... which is bad for a transport. It's weapons are bad as well... a cerebus launcher,
Venerable Dread - for 60pts more then the other one, and for what? +1WS, +1BS. and Venerable? Maybe 30pts more would be better, but 60?
Whirlwind - not reliable enough, as it scatters way too far
Lasboat Pred - FAR too expensive, when an autocannon/heavy bolters pred is half the price
Land Raider Redeemer - looks really good, but the model makes template placement difficult, and to actually use them, you have to drive up 6 inches away. Which is suicide, due to melta.
Servitors - 30pts for a plas cannon?
Chapter Master - IDENTICAL to a captain. When I read "to be a chapter master is to be a god amongst men" I was like, this is going to be awesome. But it has the same stats!
And so on...
However, I still love the SM codex, as it has (surprisingly) far more good than bad!

Thought for the day: Fear the Emperor or at least fear his Inquisition.

Lonely hearts column: Tall, thin metallic gentlemen with deep deep green eyes (in curvy hollow sockets) seeks well-oiled stainless steel female, must be soulless.
