Bounding Assault Marine

My friend (Orks) has issued a challenge thus: "For two hundred and thirty five points I can get a squad of twenty nine Ork Boys (three of which have Big Shootas; the rest have Sluggas and Choppas) and a Nob with a Boss Pole and a Power Klaw: find something that you have (I play normal Space Marines) that would sufficiently destroy this squad."

He didn't say if Falling Back counted as destroyed, but I want them DEAD anyway.

I had a couple of options, which I will now list:
1) Five Terminators, one of which has an Assault Cannon.
2) Ten Tactical Marines (one has a Plasma Gun, one has a Heavy Bolter and the Sergeant has a Power Weapon and a Storm Bolter) and an Attack Bike.
3) Ten Devastators (Four have Heavy Bolters and the Sergeant has a Storm Bolter).
4) Thunderfire Cannon, Whirlwind and Razorback with Storm Bolter
5) Ten Sternguard Veterans, two of which have Heavy Bolters.
6) Five Vanguard Veterans, all have Jump Packs, Sergeant has a Lightning Claw, Two have Storm Shields and Lightning Claws.

Any advice on these options would be great, as well as general Ork killing tactics.

Ironclad Dreadnought with two heavy flamers - would kill about 12 orks with the flamers then assault them and lock in combat with them for a few turns after which he would hopefully kill them with his weapons and fearless wounds while the powerclaw would need 6's to do him any serious damage... He is also 85 points cheaper

Yes, +1 to the dreadnought with twin heavy flamers

BA dread with blood talons...whats that another wound?!?! Uh-oh, time to deal more wounds.

However, you said you play vanilla marines so that won't work for you. Anything with a lot of bolter rounds should mulch them, so go with whatever has the most dakka. I also concur with the dual flamin' ironclad...it's a beast!

Thanks you. I don't yet own an Ironclad Dreadnought but they sound very good. Do you think that nothing but the ironclad could handle 18 boys plus a nob in assault? If they can they shouldn't be that cheap.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
BTW a nob with a PK only needs 2+ to damage an ironclad as PKs' grant x2 strength and hits in cc are resolved against rear armor. My friend just informed me after reading the rulebook. That said, I still have 85 points in which i could do any number of things to the orks.

I suggest you reread the rulebook looking for "Walker and assaults". Then start laughing evilly....

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

2 thunderfire cannons.

One fires subterranean blast to keep them slowed, the other fires airburst for pure killy goodness. On the off chance that a few manage to survive eight blast markers a turn and get into charge range, you still have 2 techmarines to mop up.

Set them in opposite corners of your deployment zone for additional chuckles. It's unlikely he'll reach the first, it's almost impossible for him to reach the second.

35 points cheaper, and will smash his little green men in 2 turns or less.

4 Land Speeders, all with heavy flamer, 3 with extra heavy flamer. 230 points.

Zoom in, fire with 7 heavy flame templates.

Most probable outcome is in the range of 20-25 kills the first time you fire.

Ork player assaults, knocks one out of the air if his nob can roll a six to hit, and then you drop 5 HF templates on him the next turn. Game over.

10 sterngaurd, 2 flamers, 8 combi flamers. Sit back and shoot with your special ammo for a bit, and when he starts to close in, make a 4th of july BBQ with whats left. On the off chance that a few make it out, you still have ten sterngaurd, which arn't terrible in cc.

I may be wrong, but doesn't assaults last until one squad is either falling back or dead? In which case after I shoot I will be in combat until one of us is falling back.

Two minimum size bike squads with dual flamer and combi-flamer. 220 pts
Zip in, 6 flamers kill most of his guys, assault to finish off the last few.

Three 2-man attack bike squads. 240 pts
6 heavy bolters that laugh at his pitiful shooting and can stay out of charge range as long as they feel like it.

Eight sternguard with combi-flamers. 240 pts
Plink away till he's close, then hose down the remainder with the fire extinguishers.

Scouts with combat blades and a heavy bolter + Telion. 200 pts
Telion punks the nob, then he and the HB thin out the herd. Even scouts can whup 15 orks without Nob support.

Two Whirlwinds and a Pred with no sponsons. 230 pts
Shoot. Then shoot more. Then count how many models he has remaining. If > 0, shoot more.

Even a Captain with a 4 flamer command squad has a good shot of taking them out.

In short: Pick your favorite force org slot and run with it. The only one that is even a fair fight is HQ.

Either 3 whirlwinds, or 2 thunderfires. I would prefer the TFC's. With the whirlwinds, if you roll poorly for scatter, its a wasted shot. With the thunderfire cannons, if you roll poorly for scatter, you still have 3 more templates.

If i was shooty, far away, if i was punchy, about 10-15" away, enough to move and then flamer
BTW Tuagh, you have some great ideas.
