I have been using GW stuff for most of my life in wargaming, yet, as with most gold, it has terrible coverage. Does anybody know how to get your hands on some sensibly priced, good quality gold paint. I can get my hands on rather a few different paint companies wears, well, Vallejo and AP anyway.
Any recommendations?

Vallejo Liquid Gold range. Very good. You need alcohol to thin them and clean brushes - Tamiya thinner works fine.

+1
The Liquid Gold paints are the best metallic paints I've ever used.

I use the Vallejo Model Air: Gold.
It's awesome, very thin compared to the GW stuff.

Cote D'Arms Bright Gold. It is the OLD GW Shining Gold. Best gold out there for actually looking like gold AND providing coverage.

I had a GOLD blog going at one point on MyBattalion but I can't seem to find it now... anyway I tested all of the mini-paint brand golds.
Imo, Vallejo Liquid Gold and Vallejo Model Colour are the best. The VMC gold/brass/copper colors are all actually quite amazing. As a good smooth 2nd best I'd say are Andrea Golds, but the tint is a little bit different.
The Model AIR stuff was a major let down; the silvers are fantastic but the golds separate, and stay separated regardless of shaking/agitators. If you want proof I can take a picture of my graveyard of AIR Golds hah.

My opinion is that Vallejo Liqiuid gold is absolutely miles ahead of any other metallic paint i have ever used, it really does put all other brands to shame.
I would advise anyone that has not tried it, to give it a go.
I would use a different brush though, and clean it with alcohol not water.

This is what I mostly use. Use it straight for a nice bright gold, or hit it with Devlan Mud for an awesome aged gold look.

The liquid gold airbrushes beautifully as well, cut with Tamiya thinner. Bit of a pain to clean out, not because of clogging but because the pigment is VERY fine... you can't just flush and go...

I was wondering about that actually - thanks for clearing it up, I will have to try Liquid Gold in my Airbrush :-).

Coat D'Arms. Luckily for you you're from the UK so it's easy to get your hands on. It's also much cheaper than GW brand paints and will stay usable pretty much indefinitely. Just transfer it to a dropper bottle or something because the lids on their bottles have a habit of being hard to get into.
