"You may combine forwards and backwards movement..."
Also technically nothing alters the basic allowance for all units to use the Infantry movement rules, which allow you to move in any direction

But seeing as how we're dealing with a permissive ruleset, I can see people having issues with that.

What, you mean the permission for any unit in the book (read the unit types blurb) to use the Infantry rules *unless specified otherwise*?
The vehicle rules do NOT specify otherwise.

You may not move sideways unless you pivot the vehicle in that direction, you may move forwards and backwards, however you count total distance moved in the end, 6 inches back, and 2 forward means you moved 4 inches

Jurai - no, that is not correct. You measure the path of the vehicle, and that is the distance you have moved. If you move 6" back and 2" forwards you have moved Cruising speed.
ONLY for assaults do you count the actual displacement from its starting point.

So your saying if a take my landspeeder and move 12" back, and then 12" forward to the spot I started from, I went flat out? I seem to recall that's not how this works.

Except it is. pg 57 "This means a vehicle may combine forward and reverse movement in the same turn providing it does not exceed it's maximum move." Thus you have to include all movement made by the vehicle and not just it's relative position. Hell, if it was relative then you could move 3 inches forward, 4 inches left(around impassable terrain) and claim to have only moved 5.

So it is totaly legal to move further than the fastest route?
Can I for example move my Land Speeder enough to go cruising speed and gain some survivability in cc even though it's new position only was a couple of inches from its starting point?

Unless the rule you are trying to exploit says otherwise. Some rules have/had a stipulation that you had to be greater than x from your initial position.

You recall incorrectly. The ONLY PLACE that displacement from initial position counts is combat
So in combat you would be hit automatically in the above situation, yet gain a cover save from shooting

Keep in mind that the rule for assaulting vehicles says you only check the displacement to determine what you need to hit. The actual speed the vehicle moved at doesn't matter. So, you're free to move a vehicle around in circles, but all you're doing is effecting passenger shooting, vehicle shooting, and embarking capability. It's all disadvantage and no advantage. Edit: Ninja'd by nos.

SMF has no such rule, Grakmar. Youre thinking of Turboboost, which requires you to be more than 18" from your starting position.
