Inquisitor Engel wrote:Sorry I've not be present around here for long but I've been settling into my new role as Community Manager for a rather larger video game retailer. I was sent down to GDC Online this week (so I got sent back to Austin after just leaving!) and managed to get a tiny bit of info from the very tight-lipped folks at THQ.

- Dark Millennium Online has a "pencilled-in" ship date of Spring 2012.
- Same art style as Space Marine.
- PC AND Console-based. (!!!) The Rep said it would be Cross Platform, but couldn't be 100%. I don't see why it wouldn't be (and it would hurt it if not.)
- Developed by Vigil (Darksiders) and published by THQ. Relic also has a hand in the game in many places.
- "No comment" on "Good vs Evil" lineup. A Relic employee said he was "pleased" with how the factions had been grouped, but wouldn't go further.

That's all I got! Attachment of the poster is included.

They've said that Marines will all be Black Templars. From the Imperial trailer, you can make out a psycher several times that is in all white imperial looking clothes. Best bet would be Hand of The Throne types.

Nah the one on the gaming console will suck the PC one will be fine.
DC Universe was a good example good game but on console you lose the abilty to chat unless you have one of those after market keyboards which I would think most do not have.
Plus the text space was hard to read on the console version.
And lets face it are'nt all MMO's really just a chatroom with awesome minigames.

The link I see says March 31st 2013, I wish that spring 2012 was correct but no one has done any beta testing on a grand scale and spring is right around the corner.
KotOR MMO is doing the beta right now and has been doing so for a few months now.

Maybe they learned from GW that playtesting and marketing are evil. Or they are afraid of KotOR and speed up things.

Space Marine was awesome but short, multi-player was supposed to keep it going... GOW 3 hurt it, thats just releases at this time of year.

THQ has a good track record and I say I will give them the benefit of the doubt if they simply do nothing more than make Space Marine a MMO. Adding to it A) creates DLC for a good game (Space Marine) at worst or very possibly makes an enjoyable MMO. Keep the mind open on THQ, GW regularly sticks it in, THQ has more or less given me value for my dollar so far.

What crossplatform games have there been for you to base this on? The only one I can think of is Shadowrun, and while that was apparently pretty bad I don't think that speaks for the entire concept.

I'm assuming they chose Black Templars to distinguish it from Space Marine's Ultramarines, and so they can justify new players playing as Neophytes alongside Initiates as opposed to running off on their own as scouts.

The OP doesn't inspire confidence. Putting out an MMO without a round or two of beta? I didn't think that happened anymore. And why Vigil? As far as I know, they've only done Darksiders, which I remember reading wasn't very good.

Console ruined gaming for me, dues ex human revolution is a great example, it was realed on all platforms and that's probably why it was a giant piece of gak.

This.... this is a terrible idea. If you want to see a historic example of cross-platform play failing miserably, look up the Shadowrun video game from 2007. It was cross-platform 360/PC. Long story short, PC gamers consistently obliterated competing console players; the devs tried to make up for it by giving console players things like auto-aim, but it didn't really help all that much. It fell apart pretty quick, although the game had its share of issues beyond cross-platform problems.

The developers are going to have to split their time and resources between two platforms, meaning that in the end, gamers on each console will feel as if the game doesn't fit quite as well as it should. It's going to be especially apparently for PC gamers, since gameplay design will suffer in order to compensate for less complex console control schemes and hardware.

I agree, I think it would be wonderful if they used the material they are licensing out to try and draw more fresh blood into stores and into GW games. So far, there have been no efforts at all which I think has been a terrible waste.

Darksiders was a wicked game and while wasn't revolutionary with what it had to offer, it definitely had a fresh look at the 3rd person genre.

And unfortunately consoles cannot keep up with PC, that's why it would suck. PC players can react fast with a mouse/keyboard as opposed to a controller with greater accuracy, and even if it's not a FPS it means faster movements. In an MMO that is just plain bad as well, you don't want to die because your group member or raid member can't move with the same speed or efficiency that you can because you are on the PC. While cross platform sounds like a good idea, it is still several years off from being a viable one.

Cross platform could work, depending on how the game works. If it is point and click with a stacks and stacks of skill bars ala WoW then console wouldn’t work. If it focused more on player actions over skill bars and had a streamlined auto-targeting system then console could work.

That being said, I’m hoping the game comes out on console. I bought my gaming rig last year so if my rig doesn’t meet the optimal settings for the game, I can always buy and play it on console. The issues with chat aren’t much of a issue with me as I don’t chat or raid in MMOs.

Sports, Racing and fighters play better on console... Fps, Rts, Rpg are all Pc's domain (Yes, CoD/Halo/GoW/other console shooter, TF2 is better than you). Action and Action Rpg can work well on both.

So, most likely the Action Rpg route. As long as its not a WoW clone that just comes down to bigger numbers. Action, hopefully, implies skill. I like skill.

Not sure if want ...

On one hand, another awesome 40K game. Vigil did a kickass job with Darksiders - although the PC aiming controls for the boomerang analogue were utter crap - and THQ in general puts out good games.

On the other hand, mmo's usually have a monthly cost, which I'm not sure my part-time tutoring job can support while I'm at university.

I may have to give this one a miss just based on finances :(

I'm not sure about the cross-platform. It would attract a larger fanbase, but if the PC version just ends up being a console port with modified console controls and console-level graphics, I'll weep tears of sadness. If THQ decides that they can't make a good game that works on both consoles and PC's, it's best to make 2 separate projects or scrap it altogether. Quality over quantity has always been the approach with 40K games made by Relic/THQ and I'd love to see another awesome grimdark game.

Cross-platform gameplay is not the same thing as a console port. Also I'm pretty sure you're the only person who thinks Deus Ex: HR is "a giant piece of gak". The game's gotten pretty much universal praise from critics and consumers. Oh no, it's not as clunky as the original! MAI GAYMES AM RUINED

I'm a "PC gaming master race" kind of guy and even I don't think this. Most games come out on multiple platforms in this day and age, and that is by no means a barometer of their quality.

Personally I don’t give a rats regarding the quality of graphics regarding a game. Even if the graphics are bad, as long as the gameplay is solid, it will hook me.
