Subject: Beards?

So I've always had an ork army, and they don't really have that much hair so I haven't really noticed a problem.
Now that I've started my dwarfs though, I'm getting stuck at each beard. I have painted a couple beards that have come out looking pretty decent, but they generally look lame.
Do you guys have any suggestions? I've been using the advice from the dwarf army book, but I want to see if there are any more effective methods/

For hair of any kind, I find the following formula to yield dynamite results.
1. Regular color. (Red, brown, green, whatever.)
2. Dark version of Step 1, used as a wash (preferably with an ink, or a darkish wash if you don't have the inks).
3. Drybrush with a lighter version of Step 1.
I just got done doing some Eldar with green hair. Snot Green, Dark Green Ink wash, followed by a drybrush of Scorpion Green. Win.

I use a slightly different order:
- base coat, slightly brighter than the end result you want
- lightly dry brush with a lighter colour, mostly just to highlight edges
- then ink/wash, which dulls down the above colours
It's worth experimenting with the three colours, not making them just different light/dark versions of the exact same hue, which can look a little dull. E.g. for brown hair, I'd highlight with a orange/yellowish light brown. And for grey hair, some blue added to a black wash can look a lot better than plain black.
Oh, and much the same technique works for fur too.

+1 to the two above posts. Just dabble in a few combinations and see what works

This guys beard was done in the following manner;
The base coat was done is Vallejo Vermillion. Then the whole beard received a couple of quick washes with Baal Red and Devlan Mud. Then I used Vallejo Deep See Blue, and Vallejo Luftwaffe Green, mixed with a little of the Deep Sea Blue, and these became my shadow colors. Once I was happy with the shadows I started mixing yellow into my Vallejo Vermilion and started to highlight the beard.

He looks awesome! I've never used the Vallejo paints before. I'll have to look into getting some of those colors.
