I haven't seen a game tell me "Thanks For Playing" in a long time. Probably up until the Dreamcast era if you beat a game it usually at the end somewhere it thanked you for playing the game. I realized I haven't seen that in awhile.
Now obliviously I haven't beaten every game out there so I have no doubt there are some exceptions.

Yeh it has become rather rare, though I doubt most would even let the credits roll entirely now anyway. Always thought it was a nice classy touch.

IIRC, Halo Reach had a quite an expansive "thank you" message after the credits, mostly as it was Bungie's last Halo game, I suppose it's just that many people don't watch through the full credits.

It also had an easter egg where you could get into a room full of tributes to community groups/members. But then Bungie has always had a very close relationship with it's fans.

DOW 2 retribution should give you a thanks just for keeping your PC on long enough to finish the credits,
Over 30 mins the credits roll on for.
Wish some games had thank you messages, make it fell more like the developers care.

Halo 3 and Halo Reach both had thank you messages at the end of the games.
It would be nice. Lots of books have some kind of 'Thanks for Reading' messages in them. Would be nice to see in movies too, given how much we pay to see films that are so often disappointing.

Or maybe they can just start putting 'apologies' ahead of time haha.

I've found that quite a few games just have the whole "thanks to all the guys and gals at *insert developers here* and you for playing" during the credit sequence instead of in big flashy letters right at the end of the last level. =/

Never played Reach, but Halo 3's highlight is finding out that Master Chief's name is... is... ...John. Yea. Good job, Halo 3. You damn well better thank your players for their precious time.

His name was known well before Halo 3. I think very few Halo fans weren't aware his name was John in younger demographics. He's the main character of almost every Halo book and multi-media product up to that point. Besides, what's wrong with John? There are lots of great Johns. Pope John, John the Apostle, King John, John Smith, Johnny Test, Jon Jones
And come on people. Halo 3 wasn't horrible. It just wasn't as good ... But Cortana was pretty bad. A mission that never should have made it past alpha *shakes head*

Up until that point, Halo was the most successful multi-media franchise spawned from a video game. I suspect that it still is. The books are very well read by teenagers and younger. They're actually decent books too (EDIT: And the contents spread across the internet and got to many people who hadn't read the books). Spartan-117's name isn't a great mystery that Halo 3 needed reveal. Except for the Flood. I played Halo Combat Evolved. I could have lived with a book that didn't spend most of its time retelling it to me -_-

Halo (the series) had fantastic music, and a great aesthetic, but the gameplay was not impressive.

My biggest grip with the subsequent Halo games after CE is the storyline structure. The Arbiter was certainly interesting, but really, I think we would have been much more interesting as an NPC than a player character. Then there's the cliff hanger ending. I hate cliff hanger endings like that. The kind that are only cliff hangers so that you'll get the next sequel not because the story actually benefits from it.
3 just couldn't measure up. No boss battle with Truth or Gravemind, wtf? Guilty Spark really? We stopped carrying about him half-way through CE. CE had a simple story, but it had good structure, and the subsequent games just didn't measure up. Reach recaptured the magic a little, but not quite.

Yea, Greg Bear and Karen Traviss are for younger readers and teenagers. maybe you're just talking about 'The Flood' which was terrible.
We're not really going to diss on Halo books when people here probably have read plenty of 40k books.
Cliffhanger ending complaints are justified, but complaining about 3? and Boss battles? you want BOSS BATTLES in Halo? No thanks, the "boss" at the end of H2 was frustrating enough on Legendary. I found H3 to be better overall than Reach aside from netcode and graphics. It had better encounter design and didn't have that abomination 'bloom' they decided to add.
I find the 'gameplay' in the Halo games to be plenty impressive as well, but that's really just a matter of taste in shooter dynamics.
I think Space Marine thanked you for playing? Obviously H3 and Reach did quite a bit of thanking at the end; can't really think of any other games off the top of my head.

Man some real gaming hipsters in here. Halo 3 is fine, it's not the end-all-be-all of shooters but to say it's bad is a little silly.

I've never touched another CoD title since, and I plan to keep it that way. We only get one life. There's no time to waste it on a franchise that terrible. dogma wrote:Halo (the series) had fantastic music, and a great aesthetic, but the gameplay was not impressive. This. Times a million. I enjoyed the first game. Not at all enough to make me even remotely interested in shelling out cash for it, or any future titles, but I did enjoy it. However, after the first game, every Halo since has literally felt like "Halo: New Shoes". I don't play multiplayer because your average high-pitched 12 year old screaming in my ear about how sniper rifles, shotguns, and grenade spam pwn everything, makes me want to kill via fist-up-anus brain extraction. That leaves me with co- op, which is only fun when you're too plastered to know what you're playing anyway, and the campaign (Read - "Halo: New Shoes")

Travis and Bear are relatively new to the franchise. Nylund is the man who made the Halo Books succeed (The best ones, Ghosts of Onyx, Fall of Reach, and First Strike were all written by him). Subsequent authors were okay but not quite as good as Nylund. Im probably boycotting Travis' books though. I still hate her for what she did to Mara Jade Skywalker and then for being a total baby about Lucas retconning the Mandalorians (Apparently its all okay as long as she's the one ruining the fiction but when someone else does it she throws a fit). I just don't like her and I don't care that she's a decent author.

Its not just that, the shooting mechanics themselves are just...poor. And I'm not saying this as some kind of PC snob, though I am a bit of that, because some of my favorite multiplayer shooters are on consoles (Killzone 2 and 3, Resistance 2 and 3, Project Snowblind). But the controls and physics in Halo, all of them, are overly forgiving and floaty, for lack of a better word. Throw in poor weapon balance, and its just not that good.
