I noticed that people keep comparing Space Marine to Gears of War and calling the game a Gears Clone; the thing that really irks me is that the fact the its ONLY being compared to Gears of War; people keep forgetting that Gears is NOT the first game of its type; there are many other 3rd person shooters out there with a cover based mechanic(of which Space Marine did not have so I don't know people are comparing it in the first place) and with hack and slash gameplay; why is it that only Gears gets all of the fame?

In fact, why don't people say the Uncharted, Lost Planet, the latest Splinter Cell game, the latest console Ghost Recon, the latest Socom games are all ripoffs of Gears of War since people are going by the logic of "bunch of guys with guns in 3rd person taking cover=Gears of War clone"

You might as well say the Gears of War is a rip off of the game Killswitch which did the cover system first.

Because nobody cares, cause it's a stupid comparison with all of them.

Er Uncharted, Socom 4, Vanquish, Ghost recon FS (okay not out yet), Army of two. I could continue...... Have you even played killswitch? It didnt play like gears at all, it was actually closer to time crisis.

EDIT okay you aren't actually making a point... I just read the last line of the OP.

Gears is simply well known for it's cover system, it's the defining feature of the game. So what if they ripped it from Killswitch, do you see that game getting constant critical praise? No, you don't.

I'll be honest, when I saw the title I tried to think of other 3ps games and I couldn't think of any despite not liking gears and loving many of the games posted here.

People latch onto something popular and use that as a stand in for all of that particular thing. How many times have people used World of Warcraft as the go comparison to MMORPG even though it wasn't the first game to be like that in any way. It isn't just in gaming either i.e. Coke as a generic term for soda pope.

The big issue is that in screenshots, Space Marine looks a lot like Gears with characters reskinned. The game still has that "realistic" look where everything is a shade of brown. You've got the same over-the-shoulder view of a giant guy on steroids with big, bulky armor, a big gun, and a chainsaw.

I haven't played Space Marine, but it really does look like a Gears rip-off. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it actually is. But, from the viewpoint of someone who hasn't played it, it appears to be.)

They probably compare them because there are more than a few similarities. For some reason some people think that no comparison can be made because one game has a cover system and the other doesn't.

Honestly though, TPS games don't seem to carry the same blockbuster status that FPS games have. Battlefield, Halo, Call of Duty/Modern Warfare all enjoy huge player bases and fan support. TPS games on the other hand are less popular for various reasons. Gears is the only blockbuster in the genre.

I'd also point out, many third person games aren't true shooters. Splinter Cell, even after Conviction, remains a stealth game. Rainbow Six is rightfully a FPS with a TPS cover system, and Ghost Recon while popular is primarily remembered as a FPS in spite of Advanced Warfighter's third person camera. Gears and Space Marine are the same kind of TPS, while Uncharted has a hint of adventure/platforming. Others like Lost Planet and Army of Two just didn't get achieve the same status.

I'd say its this: For the most part, FPS games are shooters plain and simple. TPS games however are often mixed with other genre's and few of the successful ones are plain and simple shooters.

I hate to derail the topic, but why, oh WHY could they not have left the MP the same with Mercs vs Spies? I loved that.....

Personally, I think that Red Faction: Guerrilla was better than GoW.

Then again, I could say that about Dead Space too.

And plenty of other games... GoW wasn't really anything special IMO... a fun game, but OMG THE BETS NI THE WODLR good? No.

Not even close to being best in the world. It's like the Halo of TPS; insanely popular among its fanbase, how so, a mystery to everyone else.

It just shows, people only care about the newest games.
Wouldn't even bother trying something 3 years old.

That keeps them blind to any decent games that become classics too.

Or if they do find a new game, they compare it to a game they have played and ignore all of the older game's many, many flaws and use that to bash the new game.

It's weird but... The only 3rd person shooter game i can remember is Mass Effect?. Why can't i remember other 3rd person shooter games?

Gathering the Informations.

They use Gears as an example because it's the one what most people associate "third person shooter" to.

Ghost Recon, Mass Effect, Rainbow Six--they're squad based shooting games.
Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto, Red Faction: Guerilla--they're not true third person shooters. They're a bizzare blend of both third person shooters and freeroaming action games.
Dead Space however is simply following the formula for "Survival Horror" games where they've found that over the shoulder third person works best.

Like iproxtaco said though, they compared Space Marine to Gears because it's an easy reference point.

on the forum. Obviously

Nope. I can name a few

Armed and Dangerous

Fallout 3 (well, sort of)

Fallout NV (again, sort of)

Rogue Trooper

Hydrophobia

Mass Effect 1

Mass Effect 2

And all them are a lot better and a lot more interesting than GoW

Space Marine is compared to GoW for a few reasons (in my oppinion). NOTE: I do realize that they are different games, and I enjoy SM a LOT more than GoW.

1) The character models are similar. Armored, larger-than-life, etc.
2) Character movement is similar. Play one, then play the other, the way that they move is very similar
3) Control scheme is almost identical (yes, I realize that most games of the same general type have the same general control schemes)
4) Environments FEEL similar

I agree with everything you said, except 4, I have only played gears 1, and they don't seem similar at all...
