So I have a demon prince with bloodcurdling roar merrily t-stomping night goblins to paste. Behind the gobs is a doom diver, easily within LoS of the DP (and the standard DP model is so tall that TLoS causes no issues in most cases) - can I roar at the war machine in my shooting phase? Roar's wording suggests yes ...

I belive that a unit engaged in CC is considered to have no LoS outside of the combat.

Now, you might be able to yell into combat and attack the goblins, but I belive you may not have LoS outside of combat.

GT, that first claim rings no bells for me. Maybe you're thinking of a previous edition. I'm not saying you're definitely wrong, but that definitely needs a quote to back it up.

I'll take a gander myself when I get back home.

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

I am not sure where it comes from either.

Is Bloodcurdiling Roar defined as a ranged attack? if it is then that alone will prevent its use, but I am not sure(havn't used BCR in a while)

It is a shooting attack as far as I am aware so I would say no to yelling at the diver kill the gobos then punch it in the face.

Also mind me asking how you built the DP? I have one kicking around the old named guy and wanted to build him and possibly run him.

Here's the text for roar:

"During his Shooting phase, the character may choose an unengaged unit in his line of sight. If it is within 12" that unit takes 2D6 S1 hits (no armor saves allowed)."

And that's it. We know you can march and roar (and that you can't choose to stand-and-roar against a charge), but I've never heard of anybody roaring over the heads of enemy's the roarer is engaged with. And yet ... I think it's legal. Cheeky and strange, but legal. I'm tossing it by you guys in case I missed an errata or some kind of conflicting rule.

Cowpow - I recently retooled my 2500 point list to jam a striped down DP in there, with just MoT + roar. No magic levels, no third eyes, no fury, and not the army general, so he can go take his 335 points and rampage at will.

Hmmm you make a good point.

I assumed when it saide shooting phase it meant it was a shooting attack.

But you are right it says nothing about you not being able to do it in combat or anything.

Sneaky I like it in that case (i dont have my army book on hand) but ya if it dosnt say anything about it being a shooting attack then well roar away good sir.

Did a quick search through the FAQ- don't see anything against.

My first reaction was to say no, but looking at your quote, and the FAQ, I don't see any reason why not. I'd expect to have to explain it to folks, though, as I think most will have an instinctive thought that an attack in the shooting phase can't come out of combat. Doesn't make it wrong, though!

I guess you can Roar in combat, who'd a thunk it?

This has even more potential on a Chaos Lord that has a mount of some kind. he's not getting his LoS blocked by anyone.

*cough* demon prince *cough* (Which I think is taller than the mounted lord? I have them both so I suppose I could check Boobworm is pretty tall though ...)

Well good to hear I have some support behind this cheeky nonsense. Roar: still the best 20 points you can spend in the WoC book

Indeed, best moment ever was killing a Supreme Sorceress who had vacated a unit of spearmen to avoid the block of Chosen coming down at her.

As above - its one of those powers / abilities that seems to be an oversight in 8th ed. SImilar to the "all restrictions will be mentioned..." for non-4-type spell casting.

It seems slightly wrong to use it, but I cant find anything in the rules that prohibits it.

Sorry for the thread ressurection, but i'm looking for a way to deal with people who use this argument:

"It doesn't say you can, so you can't."

When I present ideas like this.

I'm sort of compiling a makeshift FAQ for a tourney i'm attending based on trouble i've had in older games, and people are disagreeing on roaring whilst engaged, using the above argument.

It's an absolute crap argument, but it seems to be the 'go to' phrase for people who disagree with you, and I need a way of dealing with it, because i'm sick to death of people yelling "permissive ruleset!!!111" whenever I point something out.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Actually the rules DO say you can, in general, and there is the lack of CANT removing that.

To be fair - it is the basic argument for all rules: show permission to perform the action.

here that is easy - the power gives you permission to use it, and there are no restrictions on use that can be used.
