While painting? And playing? Is that just my group of friends or is it the norm?

Unless we're at a store, drinking any kind of alcohol while playing is always the norm for us.

While painting? No.

Besides this belonging in Dakka Discussion, I would say go ahead. I drink lots of soda.

Booze and painting detailed minis is not a good combination, unless of course, you're painting Trukks or Battlewagons!

You HAVE to drink to get the most out of your games? Your games must be horrendous!

I don't drink alcohol anymore so I don't booze up while painting or playing. I think it odd that you would though, I mean the odd beer is fine, but do you mean actually getting drunk? Seems rather counterproductive to me, haha.

Alcohol is actually a CNS depressant. It will reduce the amount you shake. I've done the best detail painting of my life, a couple drinks into a painting session. As long as you aren't sloppy drunk you'll be fine.

Yes but it also reduces inhibitions so you will end up with a my little pony themed army if you aren't careful.

Yeah Drinking a few while painting isn't that bad at all really, and it's not that I HAVE to drink while playing or painting however every once in awhile, in moderation, it's needed.

I have a drink on occassion when I paint as it's usually late in the evening when I have the opportunity these days.

I don't often drink when playing, even though we're always at each others houses. None of us are teatotalers, but we normally play at 9 AM to noon. That's too early for us. I'm not against it, since we're all adults and can handle our liquir. We just don't play in the evenings.

I find a drink or too, and the right natural herb, help me relax while painting, and make my hands less shaky.

Thought there was already a playing and drinking thread

As for painting only tea or coffee depending on the time of day.
It can be hard enough for me to concentrate as it is so anything making me woozy and or headachy is not a good idea.

Beerhammer and its ilk are fine. While painting or modeling is a recipe for sloppy paintjobs or an x-acto knife in your thigh.

I wasn't saying I get hammered and knock the gaming board over, I can play quite well while having a few beers. It helps with the boredom when it's not my turn.

Not REALLY trying to start a pyramid or anything, but I have to agree, having a few drinks whilst waiting for your opponents movement phase, especially in a two v two game, is sometimes a necessity. And, if you friend has an annoying fiancee who plays pretty much to please him, and asks stupid questions whilst never really engaging herself in the game (if she did she'd know most of the rules by now) it helps deal with the annoyance without going crazy...

Not continuing the quote pyramid! Have you seen the one in the "That sinking feeling" thread?

I see your point now though. I really can't handle my drink any more so I'd be fairly tipsy halfway through drink number two and I have trouble enough getting all my DE to stand up straight as it is. Whatever floats your boat! if I had to sit through that then I'd probably be nibbling something or other. Actually now I think of it, this thread title is rather amusing. An image of painting toy soldiers with a brightly coloured drink plus cocktail umbrella in hand comes to mind. Sophistication! (Not sarcastic, I genuinely think it sounds fun ^^)

Remember while holding your cocktail to keep your pinky out! for advanced sophistication! Cocktail umbrellas should be a must. So should wearing a decorative Hawaiian button down. But remember to always leave the last button.. Unbuttoned and if your casual the top two should be left unbuttoned as well. Cheers!

Don't really play much, but there were invariably drinks when my girlfriend and I would play the odd starter-box game of Infinity at home. I've been known to paint and model with beer/cocktails, but it's not a "thing" with me. Whether I'm having a few drinks in the evening has no bearing on whether I paint and vice versa.

Granted, I never paint while drunk, but spread over enough time, one can drink quite a lot without significantly affecting performance - I like beer enough to drink it all night, but that doesn't mean I'm necessarily going to get smashed (unless I want to, of course).

Regarding drink of choice, it's entirely dependent on my supply and mood. I'm out of Scotch and Gin, which knocks out my top 3 cocktails, and sake, so it's been beer, lately.

I drink when I play 40K and sometimes when I paint if I'm with friends or need to calm my nerves after work. I am also always smoking various things during games and painting, you have to trust that no on will cheat while you step out, but the ash that falls from joints onto the gaming table actually makes the terrain look more weathered and battle worn.

I have orks and old school dark eldar. Also my roommate collects space marines, but refuses to admit he plays warhammer, so I claim they are my own in public.

Right now, I've had a few beers. Earlier, I was cutting styrofoam with a Stanley Knife. I stopped cutting the styrofoam when I thought that I was risking cutting my fingers off but painting? Yeah, I've painted whilst being pretty bladdered but not the details, just the base coats etc etc. I have yet to play a game whilst really drunk but it is on my 'to do' list.

40k drinking games would be awesome. One shot of dubrah for every killpoint. And maybe two shots a turn for every objective held.

Unfortunately, it seems that most people who play 40k either aren't into partying/getting laid or 40+ year old with a family.

I've probably met 2 40k gamers out of 100ish that didn't mind getting hammered on the weekends.

I drink Mt Dew By the gallons when I play 40k ( I normally drink Mt Dew by the gallons regardless of the situation, so it doesn't really count.). Way I figure it is if I'm not blinking, I can't misread something, because my eyes never leave the page.

I'm not quite old enough to drink (one more year!) but I wouldn't mind someone else drinking during 40k unless they were completely falling over themselves wasted.

I seriously get SO bored base coating, and honestly once I get to the detailing it doesn't affect my work in any sort of negative way... In fact, I had a couple of eyes to do last time and they looked fine, and I finished them much quicker than normal. I'm currently being urine tested for work related issues so the occasional toke of certain plants is out of the question but if that ever ends or I find a new job who knows, it might make it more fun. I imagine that doing so while playing would mess up my usual strategies, I'd be too sad losing soldiers but a few alcoholic beverages deep and if I could, I shrink myself down and lead the charges myself!

And that's the truth.

I usually open up a couple of beer or pour myself some whiskey on the rock when I sit down for a long period of painting. Not only does it stops your hand from shaking but I find it really helps in the proper mindset of activity that requires patience and repetition (There's reason why people drink while fishing too btw). You put on some music and you just go along.

You can tell a lot of people in this thread either don't drink or are judgmental about alcohol... I mean, taking a beer doesn't mean getting totally hammered to the point that you throw up in your paint pots and fall down stabbing yourself with your hobby knife.
