And it looks like Space Marine just barely broke the top ten for its release month... yay?? Hopefully the release of free DLC will spur a few more sales but I don't expect the game to show up on the NPD charts again sadly. Hopefully the mediocre showing will still warrant a sequel.

Or it could just mean it's delayed until after DMO is released. They're keeping their options open basically.

I know I'm gonna be having fun playing Orks on DMO, along with a psyker and techpriest (the Imperium classes are Space Marine, Psyker, Techpriest, and Assassin).

In all fairness, this was a hard month for Space Marine. The release of three major sequels (Gears 3, Resistance 3, Battlefield 3) and Dead Island probably hampered it's sales.

Well, with asshat reviewers calling it a gears clone, in the month that gears 3 was released, probably killed sales a lot.

More likely sales were killed due to a lack of interest. A game being a clone is a common criticism but it's really not a negative thing. Most games are clones of other games, including really good ones. Read my review of the game if you can find it. I think I covered most of the reasons the game never broke out. It probably didn't help that Exterminatus was promised a month ago for weeks prior to launch and ended up being delayed. By the time it comes out everyone will have moved on to BF3 and Gears 3 and the player base will lie dead. It's already pretty much gone on PC.

40k is popular round these part but it's not a well known cultural icon.

I've only played the demo, but It's pretty good. There's plenty of room for a sequel, at least from a gamer's perspective.

Space Marine offers things generic modern shooters and gears of war don't have, however, so the look isn't THAT grim.

So that's what killed it then, its outlook needs more dark and just a tad bit more grim.

I'd say getting into the top 10 with GOW3 and Madden '12 coming out is a pretty good deal for a 40k game.

They are US numbers though, it would probably also depend on how high it got globally. If it's sales were the best in the US then it may not get a sequel. Though if it did that second article near the start of the thread would suggest it would have to wait a little for DMO to even out a bit.

Same

I was really hoping for a commisar to be a class for DMO, where i have a little squad of "pet" guardsmen to execute, but alas, the world is cruel.

You start out as a guardsman I think for assassin, or have the opportunity anyway. Something like that.

Not exactly a commissar, so it's likely not much condolences.

I'd have liked a commisasr myself...

Space marines start out as pre-initiates, then become initiates, then scouts, then split into the other classes. The other classes have similar schemes.

this is pretty much what I predicted from the start. Great game for 40K fans, rest of the world is mostly meh. I'm pretty much expecting DMO to end up like that too once the WOW hateraddicts come and then go back to their usual crack in the first month or 2.

Depends on if it's an MMORPG or an MMO3PS style.

Is there a way to gauge how many people are actually playing SM right now? I mean, is there an actual games played/number of players counter from Relic or anything? I'm still playing and looking forward to Exterminatus.

Steam records how many people are online, but only if they're using the game through Steam. However, given the growing prevalence of Steam on PC, I wouldn't be shocked to learn Steam's recorded number made up anywhere between 25% -50% of the current user base. Not that I have numbers. That's just me wildly guessing. My current guesstimate is that somewhere around 3,000 people currently play on PC, which is nearing dead. I have no knowledge of the games current status on other platforms. I play PC so much now I often forget they exist Haven't touched my 360 since Reach came out (but Dynasty Warriors 7 might get the old girl a work out again lol)

Mostly I gauge my statement on the fact that when I try to get into a game, I am sometimes stacked into a game that isn't full and that never fills. I just don't get the feeling many people are playing it anymore. They're moving on to other things (the game lasted longer than I thought it would though I'll give it that ).

I found some current records on Steam. As of 6:49pm Eastern US time 825 people were currently playing and 1,590 total have played today. I'm sure when the new DLC comes out that will spike up.

Here are the stats for DoW2 Retribution in case you were curious. 4,439 currently playing. 5,969 total today.

Well like LordofHats said, not everyone is playing via steam and it was a multi-console release. Alos, those were the totals just for Thursday before peak playing time.

Right behind you...

A gears clone? The games have little in common. Gears was alla bout taking cover, blind-fire and not CC. SM is the exact opposite of that. Well, done rewievers, well done.
OT: I think they are just waiting for DMO to get to its feet. After that, everything is possible. Would love to get a sequel for that excellent game.

Agreed, Space Marine is far from a Gears clone, and that's coming from a huge Gears fan. I would love to see it get a sequel. I would also love the chance to run and gun as a Dark Eldar Warrior. I'm looking at you, Dark Millennium, please don't disappoint me. Please?

Also, I'm thinking around now isn't the best time to be looking at numbers, as mentioned, many huge games have been coming out recently, I'm curious to see how many people will be playing Space Marine next month and December.

Kingdom Death Fanatic. Dark Eldar: Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Dark Elves: Allegiance to the Black Crown. Also, Masons, Cygnar, and Legion of Everblight. All unnamed.

Holy gak that is an awesome username. Please tell me your army is called Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Morathi's Darkest Sin has some competition here for best handle, I think.

Some more specific Space Marine sales data came out more recently at a THQ investor briefing. Apparently, the game sold 1.2 million copies which was more than THQ expected. Hopefully that bodes well for putting more resources on a possible sequel. With the long time this game was in development, I'm guessing that we may not see it on the current generation of consoles though.
