Subject: Terror on the High Seas - A Pirate Skaven Army Project
A not too distant future, Somewhere in time and space...
Hi!
Though still a relative newcomer to Dakka, I figured I'd start a blog on my newest project - a pirate-themed Skaven army. Inspired by the likes of Clan Skurvy and the book Treasure Island, I immediately though that Skaven pirates simply sound like a very, very fun idea to try and complete, so here I am.
I had previously spent a couple of years painting very sporadically and barely finished a few models - mostly commissars - because I neither had the time nor the energy and will to paint up a full army due to a very demanding job and a lot of pressure from my school.
However, now that I'm in university and have a new, much less difficult, job, I have quite a bit of free time so I'm trying my best to return to the hobby by starting a second army and also taking my first steps into the world of Warhammer Fantasy. I really love the Skaven models, fluff and I've seen people play with them and that seems like a load of fun, so I picked them as my first army.
Here's the list of what I currently have and a few things I'm waiting for:
Chieftain BSB Warlord
Warlock Engineer
Warlock Engineer
Deathmaster Snikch
2xPoisoned Wind Mortar
2xWarpfire Thrower
Ikit Claw
Skrolk
14 Gutter Runners
6 Rat ogres
Lots of Giant Rats and packmasters
200 Clanrats
40 Plague Monks
Doomwheel
2xWLC
Screaming Bell
I'll colour code it for future reference:
Red - Not Completed
Yellow - Partially Finished
Green - Completed, yay!
I don't yet have the Skaven Army Book (It's in the mail and the mail is intolerably slow), so if anyone could help me out with a list or just give a few tips for skaven, I'd be very grateful.
Now, then, mateys. What I have in mind is to paint my Skaven along the lines of this painting. The striped trousers on the far left is exactly what I'll be going for when painting Skaven loincloths, robes and trousers, while the tops will be mixed for everyone, according to what I think is best at the time, though stripes will be featured a lot. I'll also try to add some bicornes, tricornes, naval coats, ship deck-like bases and such with green stuff and plasticard, though my skills in those areas aren't very good yet.
I'll paint up some models this weekend and I hope I'll be able to make them look good.
For now, I'll just post a picture of some of the stuff I have already (not pictured - Skrolk, Ikit Claw, 3 Gutter Runners):
And, of course, something to set up the mood for some piracy:
Arr, mateys, I hope ye will join me in my endeavor to make an army of mighty pirate rats.

that and if you have enough of the giant rats think about running them all in one unit. it is dam near impossible to kill and well they are just insanely powerfull
other then that if you can i would suggest maybe getting some stormvermin cause well skaven with HEAVY ARMOR!!! yeah
anyway i really like your whole idea of a pirate skaven army i cant wait to see some pictures from you

FLAME ON!!!!
Hmm. I'll look into it. Haven't given much though about magic yet, but from what I read, it sounds REALLY cool. Thanks a lot for the link!
Giant Rats, hmm... I was planning to split them up into two big units, to act as sort of preliminary boarding parties, but I might reconsider now.
From what I heard Stormvermin don't perform very well... However, I will look into getting them because I *really* love the models. It's almost certainly one of my favourite regiments.
Thanks! I'll certainly try hard to make something very good.
Now, then. Here's the first thing I've been working on -
I'm thinking of keeping this sort of style for most of the bases, sometimes adding barrels, bottles, treasure chests or just some random bits that you might find on a deck. I'd just like to ask you all if you think this is a good enough base for Clanrats or should I work more on it to make it look like real wood?
The painting ability is very, very slowly coming back, but it'll probably take a while before I relearn all the stuff I used to know.

Looks good, have you thought of adding some green-ness to the bases to represent the sort of green sea algae that can form?

I hadn't thought of that, but now, aye, I can see that it'd be a good idea.
Here's how the day began...
Just a bunch of cut up plasticard on some bases, hopefully resembling a wooden deck in a state of significant disrepair. The deep cut in one of the bases is where the barrel will be placed, as it comes with it's own board and it'd look awkward placed on the plasticard.
Alright, well, a full day later, I still haven't finished up any models, unfortunately, but I managed to finish up all the bases, I think.
As you can see, I tried adding some algae effects (not very well, mind you ), but I think it came out alright. One of the bases was accidentally placed horizontally. You can also see the painted barrel that will be placed on the base in the middle to the far right, cut off by the camera. Painting is still kind of difficult, but I'm getting a little more accustomed to it again.
The skaven you see standing on one of the bases is a WIP, as I'm not yet happy with it and there's loads of things to paint, but you'll be sure to see him painted by next weekend, if the week won't be very stressful.
I also found that lopping off the ends of wooden weapons or spears is a good way to get peg legs. Also, Dwarf pistols make good sidearms for Skaven pirates, as do Empire pistolier pistols.

I sea what you did there.
Also, thanks! Hope it'll be up to your expectations.

Thank you! I'm glad you think that way.
Now, then, onto newer updates. Still haven't painted much due to a pretty difficult week, but I did receive 20 more plague monks and the Skaven Army Book. Since then, I've been working on some fluff for the characters and the army in general and I have a few questions that some of you might know the answers to -
1. Is there any use for Gold in Skaven society?
2. Does Lustria have any settlement of Imperial, Dwarven or Elven origin, or is it only lizardmen and chaos?
3. Is there any information on the Scorpion Coast?
4. Is there even a very remote chance of Skaven leaving someone in an army alive, just so they could relay a message?
5. How big are Imperial ships, how many guns do they have?

I like the idea, and your painting looks pretty good. More pics!

Thank you!
Well, no good pics yet, but here's a quick one to update the status of the project so far:
Yes, I only managed to paint the first coat of Vallejo Chocolate Brown so far. Seems like the paint rubbed off on a few of those, but I'll fix it. It was such a busy day and now I'm very sad that I'm lagging behind. If anyone can give me tips or tutorials on efficiently painting without rubbing off paint with my grubby little mitts or missing little bits that I have to paint in later, I'd be so grateful!
However! Should be clear sailing tomorrow and I shall surely post at least something. Considering I have a 4 day weekend, I just may finish these 20 during that time!
So, due to how badly I've been unable to get anything done lately, I ask for your forgiveness with the following tune that is related to pirates:

Based on your picture, I think the problem is having them rattling around in that plate because the paint doesn't have time to dry before it's rubbing on another surface. I'd say that you need to either a) attach your models to their bases, or b) attach them to something else via pinning, blu-tac, or whatever. That way the wet paint won't be in contact with anything.
Good luck!
