Just wondering so that when I start painting them I do it the right way.
There is nothing on Lexicanum, but there might be something from other sources.

Not that I know of. Try checking Imperial Armor 9 and 10, the Badab War. They have a lot of colored diagrams of Salamanders and they might denote sergeants in there. It could be with a yellow helmet but I'll admit there's so many green Marines in there I may have gotten confused.

Do you have either of those? Would you mind checking?

But the Ultramarines denote sergeants by red helmets. Or is that only Assault Marines?

Chapters that follow the Codex Astartes denote Sergeants by giving them red helmets.

@forruner_mercy:
No thats ultramarines and codex adherent.
@Coolyo294: common practice but the codex is interpretable.
In codex armageddon ( old and maybe no longer perfectly valid as the skin tone is not black...) the tactical sargeant has a black kneecap.
Personally the Salamanders who had to endure being painted by me got black stripes/half-black helmets for vets and fully black helmets for seargents. But thats nothing officially.

Probably yeah
I was thinking of doing perhaps painting the helmet black. Easily noticeable among a sea of green.

Why not try and converting. I know a bloke who gave his Salamander Captain a Lizardman Head.
Try going to eBay or something and get cheap Lizardmen heads, give low rank Lizards to Sgts, slightly higher to Vest, and so on.

I've always preferred denoting Salamanders sergeants with black helmets. Give veterans black helmets as well. Makes them stand out without making them targets.

I think I saw a blood angels player or other red chapter paint his sargents with blue helmets. I lol'd at his creativity
Yeah a black/half black helm would work really well IMO

According to Imp. Armor, Salamander Vets/Sgts wear gold helms and gold shoulder trim. For my Sallies since they're 1st Company and technically all vets , I have them all with gold trim on their right shoulder and Sgts have gold helms so it doesn't look too overboard and still relatively Salamander looking. I've seen the black kneepad as well done for Sgts.
Do what looks best to you sinces theres quite an amount of variations. I personally think gold denotations pop out a little more than black ones due to the decent amount of black already in the scheme, so I just roll with that.
Edit: http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Salamanders - Has some pics of the schemes in IA10.

Thanks for that! I also like the pic of the guy with what looks like a custom MK6 helmet, though it looks like he has TDA on.
