I just started building up a Tyranid army about a month ago and decided, last night, I want to try my hand at a Mycetic spore. I've never touched green stuff before or scratch built anything, for that matter, but I think it's coming along okay...

It's an old nerf ball I found in the attic. A little small compared to other spores I've seen, but I figured as long as it is as big as a fex it'll do just fine. What do ya think?

Nice! All I'd say is make sure the base of it conforms to the rules. They do have attacks and an opponent might think your trying to cheese him by making the spore much larger to get a closer range Also the bigger the spore the easier it will be for you to place your units outside of it when it comes down which might been seen as cheating.

I only say this because I had a match once where a friend measured every marine i pulled out of my landraider because theres the "emergency" disembarkment where if not all can make it something bad happens.

Otherwise it looks great, I'm making a nid army soon just got a carnifex and waiting on magnets. You should give your spore some characteristics of nids, like the plated armor, or the spined collumns along their skin carapaced bodies or even the bones that stick out of a carfniexs back like toxic plume tubes.

I also saw these and was going to do them cause they look easier, you could put this along the nerf ball

just the way it looks like its covered in veins.

Looking good!

My Spods are the Plasma Hatcher as seen in decoste007xt's link.

There isn't an official model so anything goes for the size of model and base as long as you aren't clearly abusive.

I reckon anything between the 60mm round base and the large oval Trygon base is fair, considering the Spod is a monstrous creature.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

It's looking great, I like all the details you've added.

I like the football and it's spiral pattern, my only suggestion would be to add some texture to it.

Nice one.
You can use Hot glue to add some texture on it.
I made one with it and it works pretty well :

Thank you all for the comments! I do agree that it still looks a little too clean; glue gun looks like it'll take care of that, though.

It's not exactly uniform, but the size is roughly that of a Trygon base. I don't believe the spores have to be too big to believe that a MC or a 20 strong brood hatch from them. I like to think that whatever is in them grows to maturity upon impact and then bursts out. I mean, just look at the Tervigon and how many gants it can potentially spit out.

Or they could be like on the Alien movies & curl up into a fetal position to take up as little space as possible. Not like they need seats & restraints like we do after all.

That's a really creative use of the nerf-ball! It looks really good. I agree that you should throw in some texture, but I think you got it covered. There was a really cool walk-through for using a glue-gun to add texture somewhere on the forums here...

I would say grab a little bit from each example you to to make your own unique spore, Iv'e seen the glue gun technique and its too "busy" looking for my tastes. Partially because you want to control your design a lot more, and make it feel like its alive as the spores are living breathing creatures. You want it to feel like if someone gets close enough to it the spore could NOM them whole! The tentacly door helps give that feel, that if a marine got too close they would be entangled and eaten by the spore to make more nids!

Also what color theme are you going for your nids? and the spore presumably?

I did end up going with the glue gun technique, but kept it at a minimum. I agree with the busy look, so it was just added to the surface, in small amounts, to give it a little texture.

As for color schemes I'm still up in the air about what I want to do. I was leaning toward trying the dip method (calm down) with a bleached bone basecoat; still unshure of carapace color.

I play SW as well and go all out with their paint scheme, so I wanted something that's little faster for the Nids, but still yields appealing results.

Oh yeah, my army belongs to Hive fleet Thanatos.

All over

Until an official model you can make it as large or small as you want but use your better judgement. A pod the size of a warrior isn't big enough also a pod the size of a Titan is to large.

Welllll you could argue... i mean a rhino cant even hold 1 space marine. You could argue a spore is the size of a base an HQ uses or rather one a dreadnaught uses.. that'd be the size I pick.
