Nothing particularly awesome about the writing, plot, or characters, but hey...Necrons.

Fall of Damnos is ok, but if you are reading it for the Necrons, I recommend Dead Men Walking instead. The Necrons are much more sinister and the DKK are very interesting to read about.

Basically im just looking for something with Necrons, and I heard fall of damnos explains some of the new fluff.

Space Marine Battles novels are pretty bad, they're basically bolter porn (Space Marines blowing stuff up) and disavow any kind of characterization, drama, personality, or suspense. And that says a lot for a 40k novel. Page after page of "and then they shot Necrons then got shot by Necrons".

If your looking for something good try the two space wolf omnibuses. 6 novels in 2 books should last you 32 hours.

"Fall of Damnos" was interesting at first but then it devolved into "then the Spess Mahreens beated up evrahbody!"

I ended up just skipping around to when it talked about Necron internal affairs and other cron fluff, but if you're going to do that you're better off just googling stuff rather than buying a whole book for a little bit of Necron juice.

It's also rather lame that Damnos started out as a Ultramarine defeat and Necron victory in the Necron codex, then retconned by Ward into a Phyrric victory at best for Necrons bordering on a loss. Then In "Fall of Damnos" it's like a SM fanfic, and the Necrons get beat up bad.

I also need to read "Dead Men Walking", and I should get a hold of "Hammer and Anvil", both novels have 2 cool armies so whoever wins I'm still happy with.

Dead men walking is amazing my problem was it doesn't last nearly as long as you want it. Though if you have a thirty two hour flight read dead men walking and some/all damos but you definatly want to read dead men walking.

Personally I thought Fall of Damnos was a really good read, but if you want to see the REALLY sinister side of 'crons, then read dead men walking.

Dead Men Walking FTW!

Fall of Damnos... well, if you like 'crons you should read it for their part of the story. Great intro into what GW was trying to accomplish with the fluff changes in the new codex.

However, be prepared to find yourself skipping past some of the SM parts.

Necromancy! Even my flag was different at the time I posted this, but thank you anyway!

On a side note I can recommend Dead men walking to everyone

Never read a C.S. Goto book huh?

Theres a necromancer around?

It's a legitimate strategy.

Fall of Damnos was written by Nick Kyme, my favorite author.

I would never read a CS Gotohell book on purpose because it contains so much crap. I mean, how do you not know the name of the Luna Wolves legion (he misspelled as Lunar)?

Not that I'm commonly inclined to defend Goto, but GW themselves on occasion (mis?)spelled the name thus in the distant past.

Fall of Damnos was...interesting. Certainly not the best "Space Marine Battle" book that's been put out, but certainly not the worst.

The Hunt for Voldorius was terrible. You want "lawlz spehss mareenz are the winz" read that. I think like three total marines die.

As for good SM stuff, Space Wolf series was/is awesome. Helsreach, the most recent DA book - Purging of Kadillus are great. The Rynn's world book was fantastic as well.

If you're looking for some non-SM awesomesauce you can try the Gaunts series (superb), the Ciaphas Cain series (you'll laugh through most of them, the writing is excellent). And some of the random IG novels are good, Cadian Blood, Gunheads, Redemption Corps.

Finally, if you're looking for some heretic action the Soul Hunter series is pretty badass.
