Hello there, Fantasy players. This is Anvildude. You may know me as the newb that recently started perusing the Fantasy section of this website, and was asking around about shooty Tomb Kings builds.

Well, here I am to start writing the list. Any advice on what units to make or buy, how to use them, and any tidbits on the basic rules of the current edition of WHFB are all well appreciated.

So, without further ado, I present my so far completed Tomb Kings units:

10 Skeletons Warriors- Spear, Shield and Full Command

2 Skeleton Archers (20 more on the way)

1 Liche Priest on foot.

Pending:

Queen Khalida, beloved of the Asp Goddess

Ushabti with Great Bows

I'm going for a Shooty Tomb Kings initially, and once I've gotten that created, I may expand into an incredibly magic- heavy army as well. But in any case, this is what I currently have: is it enough for small skirmishes? How would you suggets I run it, if I can find anyone willing to play such small points?

I've heard. I'm planning on using the Ushabti as more of a fire-magnet, while still being able to dish out some strong hits with their bows. Maybe even get a Collossus with a Bow of the Desert. I'm sorta going for a theme here- and thinking about a Necrotect as well.

You're a bit terrible for your points cost Cowpow - OH SNAP!

Or to put it another way, I tentatively disagree, and I think great bow ushabti are really quite cool, even if they aren't balls-explodingly-awesome like khorne halberd warriors or something. When I was messing with TK lists I was looking at running an 8-10 ushabti bow unit, and I'd recommend probably 8, either for 2x 4, 1x 6 or 1x 8 as points allow. Musicians in all, naturally (don't worry about modeling, one of them squawks or chirps or so).

For expanding what you've got, I'd say keep putting warriors into that warrior block, eventually getting to 40+ so it has the bodies to last in combat. This is where your tomb prince or king will end up - are you actually using Khalida as Khalida? I've not paid attention to what she does now, but I'm guessing it's still shooting related? Not a fan of SC myself, though I support using lovely models for things (like tomb princesses / queens ) Then I'd say another 20 archers + musician is in order to go with the one you're working on now.

A casket of souls is a definite must buy, and since you're going shooting I'd think at least one catapult is a must. You ought to branch out into some monstrous stuff at some point - double roaring warsphinxes is the best bet IMO but you've got some solid options with colossi too. Whatever you do though avoid the necrosphinx, it's a trap

-------

As far as playing what you've got, what does all this come to? I wouldn't really suggest playing under 1000 points myself, fantasy isn't very rewarding with min units, tiny magic, little shooting, etc. I'd see if you can bulk up the warriors (30 strong?), get another 20 archers, get 4+ bow ushabti, the liche and khalida as a tomb princess in at 1000 points. Something tells me it should work out.

Stalkers offer some really weird shooting and some cool rules, but I just don't see them working out too well m'self.

Spacers are great for those big blocks; a 40mm base with an old pillar or statue or pile of crates (to go with a Raiders of the Lost Ark kind of feel) is a lot easier and cheaper to paint than four skeletons.

Huh, are spacers legal? Never thought of that myself.

Yes, I'm planning on using Khalida as Khalida, and probably sticking her in a big block of Archers, since she lets them use her own BS3 instead of their BS2.
Wasn't really thinking of having many warriors at all, actuall, if I could get away with it. I've got some modelled up 'cause I think they look good, but I'm not sure about actually playing.

And the small, min size is more so I can learn the very basics, like movement, turn order, etc.- remember, I come from 40k, which, anything else it may be, is fairly simple when it comes to actual combat.

the army that won the throne of skulls GT used khalida. i thnk the list went somethink like: 89 archers with khalida, L4 heirophant, bsb with burning banner. 2 warsphinx, 2 screaming skull catapults, casket of skulls and maybe some other stuff like horses.
essentially the other units are blockers so the archers can focus fire (with smiting) 180 poisened, magical, flaming attacks that always hit on 4+ per turn....
that seems a bit OP but maybe give you an idea??
essentially if you take khalida, i think you must get the most of it by just putting her in a ridiculously massice unit haha
hope this helped

That's exactly what I was thinking. Just keep getting skellies, and keep making my Archer block bigger and bigger. Some Ushabti with Great Bows to distract, some charrioteers or horse bowmen to run interference, and maybe a Colossus or two with Bows of the Desert to be intimidating.

And a Casket is a given- extra d3 power dice? Yes, please!

Does khalida give you my will be done?

Matt Ward declared death pit on the Eldar god Khaine. To celebrate his victory he held the most awesome party ever and all the Eldar were invited. The intense pleasure from the orgy with him spawned Slannesh, created the Eye of Terror and destroyed the Eldar empire. Their last words were, "worth it."

So spread the word, and beware of Matt Ward for he can Death Pit at any time.

She does not. However, she's a fair melee powerhouse in her own right, even aside from giving her unit of archers a BS3 and poisoned arrows. Though I wonder, does the Blessing of Asaph work on undead constructs as well? I'm just imagining a block of 20 strong Ushabti with Great Bows with BS 3 and Poison, backed by a horde of spearmen with a Prince.

I know. Prolly going to get 3 or the Great Bow Ushabti, and maybe 3 of the Great Weapon Ushabti, and convert- maybe making it so I can swap out, since I'm thinking of having an alt-list that's a sort of Monster Mash.

That's an interesting idea! It's a crazy amount of points, but it'd be fun so long as you weren't dodging cannons. It's also a lot of killing blow attacks if you drop that spell on them...

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

Well, been reading that "20 Games to Perfection" blog on Khemri.com, and decided that, yup, prolly gonna need some faster units- so I went out and bought a box of Horsemen, that I'm gonna build up as archers. I've also started painting my Liche Priest- would you suggest running him as a HLP or a regular old LP? It's a bit weedy in my taste for a HLP, I think, and I'd kinda like to do some special modeling for any more important Heroes.

I'm not a tourney gamer, though. I'm a fluff gamer. 'sides, we have almost NO WFB players at my FLGS anyways- it'll probably all be friendly games. And this is really just my beginning idea- I'm planning a sort of 'monster mash' for my later list, with heavy magic and a ton of constructs, if possible.

I play for fun, and for theme, before I play to win.

Speaking of which, I just got my first three Great Bow Ushabti today. Rather excited about that.

Khalida needs to be in a 1500 pt game (well, 1460).

Blessing of the Asaph is Skeleton Archers only.

I loved the winner list, because it was an "anti-everything people usually bring" build. Which is pie plate initiative tests of doom (doesn't work well against huge long lines 40 wide), and Regenning Hydra/HPA and/or Life Mages.

The only thing it showed is that competitive lists had gotten stale and predictable.

The plug has been lifted from the unguent jar. A perfume of hours. The past has been rolled into a scroll I shall not see again. The eye of the hawk is unblinking. Open. Shut. Perfect.

I rise like the sun above olive trees, like the moon above date palms. Where there is light, I shall be. Where there is darkness, there is none of me. I rise like the moon above date palms. I am counted as one among stars.

Beam of light, sun and moon. Shining beast, man and woman. I am passing through. Come outside among the people. I am light. Gaze on me. Moon in darkness, sun in morning. Light is what I will on earth, along the Nile, among the people.

I have traveled through the tomb, dark and lonely ground. I am here now. I have come. I see. In the underworld, I embraced my father. I have burned away his darkness. I am his beloved. I have killed the snake. I have given him meat. I walk in my sleep through earth and heaven.

I have set the sky in two parts. I pass through. I wander the horizons. I have dusted my feet with earth. I have worn the skin of a black panther and chanted into the ears of children. I eat with my mouth. I chew with my jaw. I am a living god come forth. I am with the earth millions of years.

In other words, a little bit of Raising on my own thread. We Kings of Khemri don't use Necromancy, after all.

It's been a while, but I've been working on my army, and on the list. I'm still determined to end up with a Khalida-based list, but I've added a couple things folks generally consider to be powerhouses and useful units- as well as some less- useful.

The first big new thing is my Warsphinx!

I'm going for Jade as the material, along with all my other Constructs, though the army in general is going to have a scheme reminiscent of ( I belive) Menkaure's pyramid-or how it was supposed to have looked, with dark grey granite, the pinkish/bone limestone, and an electrum cap. The metal here, and on all my 'metal' parts, is actually a mix of predominantly Boltgun with some Shining Gold or Dwarf Bronze in it. The green is a color I've mixed myself, and is remarkably thin- what you see there is about 5-7 coats of it, and it's still not completely covered.

I've actually magnetized both his tail (for the Envenomed Sting) and the Tomb Guard that ride in the Howdah, so that I can have the option of putting a King or Prince in there if I ever want to- and I've replaced the tongue (though the head's not in yet) with GS flames.

The second I've done is a Tomb Herald

He's just a Skeleton with a GS cloak and the Sphinx's banner, along with an arrow through him, though I realize you can't really see the cloak, and the arrow's difficult to make out too.

Sorry about the quality of the pictures- I'm using an old, old cell phone, from before they had megapixels. (that's a joke, by the way).

Some other things I've done- Taken the Sphinx's TK and put him on a base, and taken all the gribblies that come on the Sphinx sprue and made them into a Tomb Swarm. If I can get another Sphinx I'll do the same with them there, as well.

So, as of now, my Army consists of around 22 Archers, 10 Spearskellies w/ Full Command, 8 Horse Archers (which are pretty cool) with Full Command. A Liche Priest on foot, a Tomb King on foot, and High Queen Khalida. 3 Ushabti with Great Bows and a Khemrian Warsphinx. 1 Tomb swarm. And I'm of course working on more Ushabti, as well as a Colossus and a Titan. And more core, too. I'll probably end up with a lot of Skeleton Horsemen- I like those guys a lot.
