That's pretty awesome... great painting, but the conversions both obvious and subtle really shine for me.

Great job!

Those models are Necrons in a nutshell.

Once the number seven, being the seventh number, be reached, then formest thou thy first Plague Marine squad. Likewise, thou shall marshall thy remaining troops in squads of Seven, and Seven shall be the number of brothers in each of your squad."

They are amazing. I much prefer these conversions than the acrylic rods.

Thanks for the kind words.
I wanted to stay close to the generic theme of necrons but wanted to make them look a little more organic at the same time... Between those rods and the 24 on my warriors, I'm looking forward to painting something other than green rods. Thanksfully the new dex brings some ccrons with more swords. Now I'm trying to airbrush some monoliths...

Agreed. I can look as closely as I like at the shoulder markings and they never start looking any less like inlaid metal. In fact, for all the OSL, conversions, etc. your metal finish is what impresses me most.

Hmm, I've never seen Necrons in this way before. They've always seemed fairly cartoonish to me prior to now (I even painted one pink because they amuse me, although I've yet to finish it).

You've managed to actually make them more ghostly and other worldly. It's really nice, well done.

I'm loving the Immortals and the Wraiths. The Necron Lord just isn't doing it for me though. I like the blades on the staff, and the OSL...I'm not sure if it's the wispy skull/soul thing in his hand or the crystal on top of the staff, but something seems a little too...rounded for me. Like the edges of the image have been filed away to make the Necron Lord safer for children. I know that's maybe not the biggest help in the world, but it's the best I can come up with...

On the other hand, your mastery of OSL is amazing.

Thanks! The metal was done in layers of metallics with washes. I always water my paints down and add a matt medium to the metallics along with some peral essance. So that's 1:1:1 water:paint:medium then about half a q-tip head's worth of peral essence per 1 part, to start... Then I use this formula, more or less:

Primer Black
Boltgun Metal
Badab Black Wash
Botlgun Metal wet drybrush getting rid of most of the black except the furthest recesses
Devalin Mud Wash
Boltgun Metal wet drybrush leaving a little more brown exposed than you left black, before
Grayphone Sepia Wash
Mithril Silver:Boltgun Metal 1:1 wet drybrush
Mithril Silver + more pearl essence drybrush
Sometimes I finish with a coat of clear varnish and pearl essence. I did this with poor results on the immortals and first lord but refined it for the wraiths (most recent paint jobs).

So that's the metals... the key is working your layers until you like the results but apply each layer sparingly to slowly build it up. I also use the wash as a paint when you get to the brown / sepia, especially on the large flat areas or it starts looking like a coffee stain.

@Jimsolo
I kinda know what you're saying. He was the very first model I've put together and painted in about 15 years so I didn't have a real clear vision for the army at this point. I went back and forth with the staff though... The blades, to me, gave him a feel of some 80's metal rocker from Heavy Metal, or more appropriately Wizards (where the main baddie is Necron!) cartoons. I ultimately ended up keeping them on, maybe as a tribute to 80's wargamming & rogue trader, some unconcious love of hand drawn cartoons, or whatever other reason... The glowy light was supposed to only give the impression that light was coming from the staff (as this was going to be a staff of light) but again, I was torn on the tip too... I wasn't sold on leaving it empty (as you'll see later on my warscythes) but settled on this. I agree he looks a little more cartoonish though. I'm not sure I'd do it the same if I did it again but I'm not too unhappy with the final result.

To everyone else: Continued thanks for your kind words. I'll try and get something else posted later today.

A Tale of Two Monoliths!
So I've been working on these two bad boys for a couple months now. First time using an airbrush so it was definitely a learning experience but a ton of fun! Setting up the lightbox for these shots was a barrel of monkies! Figured I'd show some of the WIP pics too.

WIP Spoiler to follow forum rules. Skip if you just want the finished product.
Spoiler:

So with those complete I figured I'd take an army shot too. Difference in lighting was due to flash. I think I have a better shot somewhere but this should do, for now. C&C always welcome.

Loving the monoliths, especially the portals and gems. I was a little unsure what to do with my gems, but I think I might use your style in future monoliths. The highlighting in the center of the portal is especially good. You went beyond scorpion green it looks like. What is that, scorpion green and white?

And would you be able to post some close ups of those scarabs? They don't look like your default necron scarabs.

Thanks for the kind words! The monolith portals were actually started with white and pushed it back to orkhide shade. So you're correct that I went all the way to white for them. I actually mixed from white > white:scorpion > scorpion. Then when that was done I went back over it with some gloss varnish & pearlessence to give it an iridescent look which is much more dramatic IRL than pictured.

As for the scarabs, they're the metal 2nd edition scarabs. I had 40+ of them from a long while back and, with the new book, now have a reason to start building them up! I put 2-3 on a base, flying ones flying, closed wing guys on the ground mostly. Then I cut some in half and made them look like they were coming out of the ground. I took closeups of all the individual units so I'll post them later.

Edited to add pic

Locing the OSL. How did you do it? Start with white in the centre, work through Scorpion green to Dark angels?
I'd really love to be able to achieve that effect too.

@The Cornerfag~
Your Necrons are looking pretty good so far! I'd say the best tip I could offer you, based on the warriros OSL image in your gallery, is to thin your paints a little more.

The portals were done by airbrushing them white, then blending through scorpion green to snot green (second WIP image). Once that was done I added a little gloss varnish to the portal and let it dry completely. Then I kept going, working back to DA green then Orkhide Shade. When that was done I used a q-tip or eye shadow applicator brush with a little alcohol to rub off the dark green from the raised edges, exposing the lighter color underneath to add some depth (without applying a wash and drybrushing the raised edges with a lighter color). This also let me take full advantage of the blending I did with the airbrush. Otherwise I'd have to try and replicate it on the raised edges. The final touch was the gloss:pearl coat, applied only to the white / white:scorpion areas to give it a glowy iridescence.

Everything is thinned with water and a little matt medium. The below recipie is for the tubes / portals. The OSL on the normal metal from the tubes / portal is just DA Green for the shadowed light and Scorption Green for the highlights - I might have used a VERY small amount of Scorpion Green + White for the closest reflections of light. The trick is thinning your paints so they blend well. Applying multiple layers until you're happy with the results. Sometimes it might not look like much is going on but if you keep working at it it will blend up nicely. Keep just enough paint on your brush to make the area your painting look wet for a second then dry. If you see it pooling up, there's too much paint, dab it on a paper towel and reapply.

So here's the general recipie I follow for my greens:
Orkhide Shade
Dark Angels Green
DA Green : Snot Green - 1:1
Snot Green
Snot Green : Scorpion Green - 1:1
Scorpion Green
Scorpion Green : White - 1:1
White + Pearessence (or metal medium if you don't have powdered pearlessence)

Hope this helps!

@Miss Dee
Thanks! I was going for a more standard / classic Necron theme but wanted to do something to make them pop a lil. That and I dislike the green rods they supply!
