Subject: Lysander WIP...now with purple! Updated 11/3

This is my Lysander for my IF army. I was not happy with the normal pose of his arms, I felt it was a little to "squished", so I used some pins and putty to reposition both arms. I really wanted a "winding up for the strike" pose, and as his body was already in great position I just needed to reposition the arms.
Also, I decided I did not want to go with a red cape, though I did go with red trim, I wanted a 3rd color to balance everything out and that is why I went with blue, I will probably be adding some white trim on the cape before I am done. In addition the shield will be white as well, w/ a red eagle and green laurels.
So what do you think keep the blue, or switch to red?

A long time ago I read somewhere that their homeworld was Terra. I painted mine up in gold and did red trim and thought man this red and gold is awesome, looking Roman and alll. Then after finishing my 80th model I remembered their colors are GOLD (yellow to purists) and BLACK with white. So with that in mind red trim looks good a deeper blue looks regal, and white is a good formal option. I've seen your other work and look forward to seeing what you decide.

I think that would look great Redfinger. Incorporating some contrasting colors into the cape will not only draw your eye to it, but also make the yellow pop a little more.
Planning on any freehand on the fabric? A Baroque cloth-of-gold embroidery style would look amazing over the blue-violet base if you're up to it.

I'd be going a deep, rich/regal crimson on it, myself. With a white shield that also has green detail, the end model may end up with too much of a "primary colours/rainbow marines" look to it. The white of your shield will provide enough for the third colour, especially as he leads with it. Dark red/crimson/some shades of purple fit in well enough with red but if deep won't distract from the rest of the model in the way the bright blue does.
Consider adding a small shield to the right shoulder to partially cover the gap and distract the eye where you've pinned the arm and puttied the cabling. I know marines and terminator scales are all messed up at the best of times anyway, but when you consider there's supposed to be a (human) shoulder in there it suddenly looks really off.

I reckon a deep crimson red would work well, that colour blue just contrasts to much with the yellow

I think the red would balance the model out a little more than the blue. I'm just not quite a fan and think it 'sticks out' rather than adding something to the model.
Just my humble opinion.

Hmmm...never thought of the shield, I have some GK shields that I could add, I think I may blu- tac one on and see how it looks. I have started shading the blue with a color called Vallejo Black Red, and it is adding a deep purple hue to the blue and is really making for a nice contrast, I dont have time to post pics now, but I will later. Also the white shield is just about done now and I really like how it all works together.
Ashton Automatically Appended Next Post: Here are a couple of more pictures with the shield, I also added s GK shield over the joint of his right arm, some one mentioned it looked a little off, and since then it has started to bother me, the shield is not permanent, but I will let it sit for a while until I decide I like it or not. In the picture you can kind of tell the blue is getting darker and more purple, I am taking my time on it so I think it will take a few more coats.

Lovely, but I think you need a bit of contrast in their as the Yellow, Orange, Red combo can be overpowering. Maybe some Ice Blue on the Thunder Hammer, with dark metallics and blue washes.

Not a fan of the blue; too many primary colors makes him look kinda cheesy. Go with a purple, since it's the complimentary color of yellow. It'll look awesome.

Another thing you might (possibly) consider is going for a crimson hue to the red, rather than the bright orangey red you have now. It has a kind of thematic link to the Imperial Fists with their Crimson brethren and would make it less overpowering/bright.
It's your call, of course - it's your mini!

I'm with scipio.au on pretty much every single point (good on you, scipio - must mean you have impeccable taste ). Purple cape would have a nice, regal feel while avoiding the "too many primaries" problem. Darkening up the red a bit would tie it in with the (then purple) cape better as well as helping that lovely yellow look a tad more vibrant (without being cartoonishly bright).
Also, I vote for keeping the armpit shield (I want to call it a besegew, but that would suggest a functional consideration in SM armor design, which is tantamount to heresy) - it doesn't look OTT and distracts from the dislocated shoulder nicely. It'd be a shame to let such a nice pose suffer needlessly from noticeable anatomical issues.

So more work done over all, I liked the idea about purple, I have a little more highlighting to do before I call the purple done, and I think I will add some white trim on the cape as well. I decided tokind of stay with blue as the I am using a blue color to do the highlighting and shading on the purple, I am digging the effect. I have also made progress on some other areas as well, the face is about done as is most of the shading on the armor, I need to start working some of the highlights now.
Thanks for all your suggestions guys and please continue to leave feedback!

That is very nice indeed. The cloak is very impressive, if you copied that colour scheme on to the edge of shield it will look spectacular. I wish I could paint that well.

Hmm...that is an interesting idea, that has led to some other ideas, quartering the shiled could be nice, and it would tie the whole heraldry idea together, and then I could add a white checker pattern on the cape and that would tie it together nicely too...

Good work on the cloak - even with blue for the highlight, toning it right down with purple as you've done makes it fit in much more nicely and is no longer a garish contrast.
