All I can say is get a codex and study the units! No one can really tell you what you would most enjoy playing or is strongest.

Edit - Also, this isn't really the forum to ask this question

Welcome to Dakka, kiddo.

I'd say a codex and a box o' warriors, I find getting to much altogether can bore you. Espcially with Necrons, it's a lot of silver! It won't be an army, but it's a start

Welcome to Dakka, by the way XD

Welcome to Dakka!

I am personally going to get some praetorians, the codex, trazyn the infinate and some deathmarks/Immortals, but two boxes of warriors and an overlord would be a good option, you've got a core force with that, and can expand from there.

Welcome to Dakka, but yeah, this is probably not the right venue for the question

Welcome to Dakka!

I have reported this thread to have it moved to a more appropriate forum; probably 40k General Discussion or 40K tactics. This forum is for making your introduction - please take no offense. You may wish to make an additional post here introducing yourself.

In answer to your questions, well, we're not too sure yet what the best stuff in the codex will be. However, it's a safe bet you're going to need troops! If you absolutely can't wait to order something right now, then I'd grab 2 boxes of Necron Warriors and start with that. Even if Immortals turn out to be super awesome, there is always a place for warriors.

Another unit that is likely to be a must-have is a Monolith.

Other then that, I suspect you might want to wait and see the codex before making any greater investment than that.

Also, if you buy two boxes of warriors, you can then use them to make immortals (and Flayed Ones or even Wraiths!) if you change your mind by following my tutorials...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Go with the basics, codex for research, and warriors for something to experiment with paint schemes etc. Don't get an ic yet until you have an idea of how they play out or what their story is, otherwise you may find you bought the wrong one for your play style (though there's nothing wrong with buying a model because you like it!) but ultimately I'd just say remember this is a hobby and do what interests you, no point having a great force if it bores you!
