I love the 40k universe, iv read countless novels ranging from the Horus Heresy to Grey knights, space wolf ect. I enjoy each and every one of them very much. Unfortunatly i have now come to a barrier, I love space marines (that goes without saying) BUT which chapter to pick? the idea of toying and tweaking my own seems.... attractive. But i feel that starting with a ready made chapter would be easier.. Any ideas?!

Sorry if this is the wrong place i am Unsure of where to post this.

Thanks in advance

My personal fav is Black Templars because they are such an abomination in the eyes of the emperor. Otherwise, picking a ready made chapter would be a lot easier for you in many different ways. Just go with something besides Ultramarines please.

Make each squad a different chapter, call it a "joint strike force"

that way if you feel like painting blue, paint some ultramarines!
If you feel like painting red, get some blood angels in their!

This way you won't ever have any second thoughts on what chapter you should have picked

No one can tell you what to play, 'cause we ain't you. The best advice is to figure out what you like amongst play style, appearance, and fluff, and then pick something that matches with all three - or else create your own. We could tell you to play Ultramarines, but if it turns out you like close combat Space Marines better, well, how were we to know?

Pick an obscure chapter referenced in the codex, that has like 1 or two lines of fluff, and just run with it.

I picked the Aurora Chapter, because I liked the color scheme, and I like tanks (the one line they have in the codex says they have like 3x the predators and land raiders of any other chapter).

There are several chapters like that, with a single mention in the codex.

Then let's get to work.

1. Which Primarch is your favorite? Why?
2. Do you like shooting, assaulting, or a jack-of-all-trades balance?
3. How do you feel about excessive body hair and howling at the moon?
4. What are your thoughts on sleeping in coffins and swigging the blood of your enemies like champagne?
5. Are you a fan of fanatical Teutons charging across the field in mobile bunkers to punch people in the face?
6. Do you see yourself as a super-special snowflake who's better than anyone at anything, ever?
7. Robes, yes or no?

I'm really curious what you mean by the Black Templars bit. Also, Ultramarines are dope and not many people actually play them, they just get put on packaging is all.

I had the same question.

The only conclusion I've drawn is that he was making a deep comment about how the Black Templars are the only chapter that professes to continue the original job of the Space Marines - the Great Crusade - yet has become the exact opposite of what the Emperor espoused: religious fanatics. They think themselves most loyal to the Emperor's vision, yet are far from it.

Probably not what he was saying, though.

1. Which Primarch is your favorite? Russ
Why? Simply put my entire family were barbarians back in the day (hailing from Scandinavia)
2. Do you like shooting, assaulting, or a jack-of-all-trades balance? Assault
3. How do you feel about excessive body hair and howling at the moon? ....excessive hair.. .. should see me. Howling at the moon is fine
4. What are your thoughts on sleeping in coffins and swigging the blood of your enemies like champagne? Bah
5. Are you a fan of fanatical Teutons charging across the field in mobile bunkers to punch people in the face? sounds like a hell of a riot
6. Do you see yourself as a super-special snowflake who's better than anyone at anything, ever? i consider no man above me untill he has bested me. upon which he will earn my respect as due
7. Robes, yes or no? .. .. depends on the situation..setting. ect

You can simply play vanilla marines and paint each squad as a certain chapter. Your veteran squads can be a mix of these paint schemes.

I've been thinking about doing this with my Sisters of Battle ever since I saw some very nice Sisters on the Dakka gallery with silver armor and white robes. I can't really stand to paint 80+ models all the same. Now I'm kinda wishing I hadn't sprayed white primer over my black-armored red-robed ones, as it would have saved me a lot of time to merely accept their paint scheme and field them as their own squad, and not only that, but they were my very first Sisters of Battle. :: sigh ::

If you're one of those people who loves to fiddle with stuff, like me - I can never be satisfied with the race of my World of Warcraft Horde shaman, by now I've probably spent over 300 dollars on paid services for her, plus another several hundred on paid services for at least 9 other characters - and is never satisfied with how things are, and can't really stand repetition, the above suggestion by bombboy1252 might be a decent idea. It beats re-painting your whole force repeatedly, like I've done with my Marines - first they were Ultramarines, then White Scars, then Dark Angels, then a custom chapter with no fluff, then a different custom chapter with a bit more fleshing out. Oh, and I've never been good with chemicals, so I haven't stripped them. EVER.
